How The Grinch Stole Christmas Musical

We had so much fun at the Grinch Musical last night! Honestly, I didnt even think that wed go. I got an invitation to attend on media night. And a zillion thoughts ran through my head. Should I invite my sister-in-law? My niece? She loves musicals. My own 9-year-old is a little too cool for school lately, and usually not interested in hanging out with me.

But, I asked him first. And he was very enthusiastic about going!

I gave him several opportunities to back out. Mostly because last year, I took him to the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall, and he was really very meh about it. But every time I said, I wont be upset if you change your mind, he insisted that he still wanted to go.

So we went.

Side note: Dr. Seuss racist? Im just throwing this out there because it exists. But it has been brought to my attention that Dr. Seuss has a racist past. I point this out in case you wish to reconsider or discuss it with your kids. More information and resources can be found by clicking that link.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas The Musical

A picture-perfect display of Seuss spark on stage

Dr SeussHow The Grinch Stole Christmas! is a classic book, possibly better known today as the film featuring Jim Carrey, which was released; and this may make you feel old almost 20 years ago. It became the second biggest grossing seasonal film of all time . Though its a small wonder that they decided to pop the film on stage four years later, its taken until 2019 for the production to get a UK-wide theatre tour.

It cant be spoiling much to tell you that the Grinch is a mean-spirited green fellow who finds himself pretty irked by the rambunctious and rollicking festive frolics of the inhabitants of nearby town, Whoville. So he enlists his faithful if reluctant dog, Max, to snaffle Christmas from under their somnolent noses. And were it not for the candy cute endeavours of the Pollyanna-optimist, Cindy Lou, he might have had his wicked way.

This production is as pretty as a picture, and if youve ever wanted to wander off piste into the pages of a Dr Seuss book, heres your chance. Robert Morgans costumes deserve a prize all to themselves; the cast wear their lumps, bumps and skinny skirts lightly. As if Christmas trees, stockings and sleighs werent festive enough, set designer John Lee Beatty adds some extra festive fizz for the curtain call, thrilling the audience..

Getting To The Merriam Theater

The weather cooperated and I dont mind driving into the city. For theater shows, I usually park at The Bellevue which is consistently $32 for an evening of parking. But, its like half a block from the theaters and I always appreciate that when a show is over. We did a quick pop-in to Macys to see the Christmas light show.

Where To Eat Near Avenue Of The Arts

There are a zillion places to eat in every price range. Depending on my mood, I may even walk up to the Reading Terminal Market. But, we didnt have time for that. We chose McGillins. I love their decor and the history of the place. Plus, the prices are decent. Last night, Brian actually disliked his first choice and ordered a second meal. But the waitress did not charge us for the second entree despite me protesting and saying I would. I thought that was super cool of them. So dinner for two was only $31.

The biggest difference for me was the role of Max, the Grinchs dog. We see him later on as an old dog and kind of our narrator, taking us through the story.

Max is played by two different actors. Denis OHare as old Max, Booboo Stewart as young Max. And talented young newcomer Amelia Minto is Cindy-Lou Who. Producers assembled an ensemble of top musical theater actors from Londons West End to complete the cast.

Dr. Seuss book tells the story of a reclusive Grinch who plotted from his cave atop snowy Mt. Crumpit to steal Christmas from the Whos in Who-ville. Then on Christmas Eve, disguised as Santa Claus and enlisting his loyal dog Max as a reindeer, the Grinch traveled to Who-ville to scoop up the Whos gifts and decorations. Much to his surprise on Christmas morning, the Whos were unfazed and celebrated the holiday with a heartwarming display of joy and love.

This musical version, with book and lyrics by Tim Mason and music by Mel Marvin and featuring the hit songs Youre a Mean One, Mr. Grinch and Welcome Christmas , breathes new life into this timeless story.

Morrison says although 2020 may be the year of the Grinch, its also a year of finding redemption and coming together as a community.

At the end he finds peace. He finds good will toward his fellow community members. And I think thats something all of us Grinches need to find.

Dr. Seuss The Grinch Musical airs Dec. 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.

Because it was opening night, we were treated to some extra special pre-show festivities. Apparently, SEPTA employees had a bus decorating contest. They decorate out-of-use busses and the winning Grinch bus was there. That team definitely deserved to win.

We also were given green Grinch hats, which was fun. Brian even wore his most of the night, which I thought was cute. I thought he was too grown up for that kind of stuff.
