Six The Musical: Henry Viiis Wives Set The Record Straight In This Fabulous Girl
The cast of Six the Musical
Divorced. Beheaded. Died. Divorced. Beheaded. Survived.
For almost five centuries, those six words have been all that many people know about the wives of Henry VIII, with these women reduced to their one-word fates. Until now, that is.
Featuring intelligent, sassy lyrics, with contemporary references galore, Six the Musical is being hailed as the new Hamilton – with devoted legions of fans gobbling up its soundtrack and snapping up its merchandise. One was in the front row on the night that we attended – gamely twerking with Anne of Cleves during her raucous chorus.
Styling themselves as a girl band in a similar vein to the Spice Girls , Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr are pop princesses seeking to tell their own story through song – with their ex-husband nowhere to be seen. In fact, its an all-female performance – with even the ladies-in-waiting being women.
After a dazzling opening number in which they introduce themselves with their descriptors – divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived – they decide to compete with each other over just who had the worst lot when it came to Henry, thus deciding the lead singer. And the means of competition? A kick-ass solo-number each – naturally.
The cast of Six the Musical
A raucous, riotous blast from start to finish, Six had the audience on its feet dancing and singing – its easy to see why its got so many die-hard fans.

British Musical Six Production History
The modern retelling of King Henry VIII’s six wives turned divas had its humble beginnings in 2017 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it was presented by history-loving Cambridge students. The concept of the show was born in a poetry class. As research for the show, Marlow read Antonia Fraser‘s “The Six Wives of Henry VIII” whilst Moss watched Lucy Worsley‘s documentary series Six Wives.
Since making its professional debut, the musical has crossed the pond for its North American premiere at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and later was announced to head to Broadway. The West End production has been nominated for 5 Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best Musical, whilst the Broadway production was nominated for two Drama League Awards.
The award-winning musical returned to London’s Arts Theatre and was set for an extended run before being impacted by COVID-19 closures. SIX then moved to their temporary castle, the Lyric Theatre, for a COVID secure limited run. Next up, the Queens are moving to the West End’s Vaudeville Theatre.
What Is Six The Musical
It’s a sassy, cool and very modern musical about the six wives of Henry the Eighth.
If you can’t remember from school history lessons, they were Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard and Catherine Parr.
And many of them, sadly, lost their heads after their marriages soured.
The show was written by a pair of British students, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, as a small production for the Edinburgh Festival in the UK, but was such a success it was catapulted to London’s West End and New York’s Broadway.
It’s returning to Australia for a second time, after a successful run a couple of years ago.
But forget the boring shows your granny would like, this is more like a pop concert than a play, with tunes you’ll be bopping in your seat to.
Inspired by the tunes of Adele, Lily Allen and Ariana Grande, the women transform from Tudor queens to pop princesses.
They tell their tales as they compete to be named the ‘lead singer,’ of the group.
