Ferricobalt Type Ii Tapes
After the introduction of CrO2 cassettes Japanese companies began developing a royalty-free alternative to DuPont’s patent, based on already established cobalt doping process. A controlled increase in cobalt content causes an almost linear increase in coercivity, thus a Type II “pseudochrome” can be made by simply adding around 3% cobalt to a Type I ferricobalt. By 1974 the technology was ready for mass production TDK and Maxell introduced their classic “pseudochromes” , and killed their true chrome lines . By 1976 ferricobalt formulations took over the video tape market, eventually they became the dominant high-performance tape for audio cassette. Chromium dioxide disappeared from Japanese domestic market, although chrome remained the tape of choice for high fidelity cassette duplication among the music labels. In consumer markets chrome coexisted, as a distant second, with “pseudochromes” until the very end of cassette era. Ferricobalt technology developed continuously in the 1980s Japanese companies introduced ‘premium’ double-layered ferricobalts with exceptionally high MOL and SOL, in the middle of the 1990s TDK launched the first and only triple-coated ferricobalt, the SA-XS.

About 20 years ago I wrote an article about the demise of the cassette tape. It was, I dimly recall, a fond farewell to the format, even though, at bottom, I didnt care. I figured humanity would cope. Even then I only really listened to cassettes in our old car, back when the millennials were still going crazy for The Wheels on the Bus and Other Songs.
Two decades later, for reasons not entirely apparent to me, the cassette is once again desirable. New and established bands have taken to releasing music on tape. From a base of basically zero, sales are way up: 129,000 pre-recorded tapes were sold in the US last year. To millennials, it seems, the cassette represents something between music and artefact.
This was definitely predictable, because somebody predicted it. National Audio of Missouri has been stockpiling 1/8th inch audio tape as competitors shut down production. Now it has got pretty much all thats left, and it is down to a years supply. Next year, National Audio intends to start manufacturing cassette tape to cope with demand.
As a journalist, I clung to the format longer than most. I have a Walkman in my desk drawer, and I can tell you exactly where and when I bought it: in 2004, in Paris, on my way to interview Omar Sharif, right after I realised Id left my old Walkman back in London. Somewhere in the attic I have a large box of interview tapes, which I suppose I could erase and sell in the event of a shortage .
Making Your Own Tape Loops
Cassette tapes are based on old reel-to-reel recorders, meaning they have two spools, and as they turn, the tape itself passes a head which can either read the information on the tape, write new information to it, or erase information.
If you manipulate the tape inside the cassette body, you can create your own tape loop that will play continuously.
When it comes to lo-fi sampling and music-making, tape loops can be incredibly useful.

And if youre really feeling artsy, you can even make your own destructive tape loops that will degrade more and more the longer theyre played.
This can be achieved by placing objects within the tape body that can cause friction. The information on the tape will slowly be shaved away.

The cassette from the 80s and 90s had their own charisma. But they also used to fade away quickly, not all the tapes but few ones. Cassette Players And Recorders
The first cassette machines were simple mono-record and -playback units. Early machines required attaching an external dynamic microphone. Most units from the 1980s onwards also incorporated built-in condenser microphones, which have extended high-frequency response, but may also pick up noises from the recorder’s motor.
A portable recorder format still common today is a long box, the width of a cassette, with a speaker at the top, a cassette bay in the middle, and “piano key” controls at the bottom edge. Another format is only slightly larger than the cassette, known popularly as the “Walkman” .
The markings of “piano key” controls soon converged and became a de facto standard. They are still emulated on many software control panels. These symbols are commonly a square for “stop”, a vertically pointed triangle with a line under it for “eject”, a right-pointing triangle for “play”, double triangles for “fast-forward” and “rewind”, a red dot for “record”, and a vertically divided square for “pause”.
A last step taken by Revox produced even more-advanced cassette drives with electronic fine tuning of bias and equalization during recording. Revox also produced amplifiers, a very expensive FM tuner, and a pickup with a special parallel-arm mechanism of their own design. After releasing that product, Studer encountered financial difficulties. It had to save itself by folding its Revox-branch and all its consumer products .

Before The Compact Cassette
In 1935, AEG released the first reel-to-reel tape recorder with the commercial name “Magnetophon“. It was based on the invention of the magnetic tape by Fritz Pfleumer in 1928. These machines were very expensive and relatively difficult to use and were therefore used mostly by professionals in radio stations and recording studios.
After the Second World War, the magnetic tape recording technology proliferated across the world. In the US, Ampex, using equipment obtained in Germany as a starting point, began commercial production of tape recorders. First used in studios to record radio programs, tape recorders quickly found their way into schools and homes. By 1953, 1 million US homes had tape machines.
In 1958, following four years of development, RCA Victor introduced the stereo, quarter-inch, reversible, reel-to-reel RCA tape cartridge. The cartridge was large , and few pre-recorded tapes were offered. Despite the multiple versions, it failed.
Consumer use of magnetic tape machines took off in the early 1960s, after playback machines reached a comfortable, user-friendly design. This was aided by the introduction of transistors which replaced the bulky, fragile, and costly vacuum tubes of earlier designs. Reel-to-reel tape then became more suitable for household use, but still remained an esoteric product.

However, in one corner of Manchester city centre three music fans believe another piece of our musical heritage is about to make a comeback.
The humble cassette tape.
Affleck’s Palace is home to what is believed to be the last remaining dedicated tape shop in the UK.
We all remember taping songs off the radio, or shoving cassettes we had saved up to buy into our Walkman or Hi-Fi’s and rewinding our favourite tracks during the medium’s heyday.
And despite them now being seen as a by-word for outdated in many people’s minds the store’s owners say they believe they could well be the future, as people move back towards physical music, and bands look for alternatives to streaming platforms.
They have already upgraded to a bigger space at Affleck’s, the Northern Quarter’s iconic indoor market, and say they are now doing a roaring trade as well as developing a loyal legion of fans.
Former Hacienda DJ and Manchester music mogul Dave Haslam is among them, while legendary rocker Arthur Brown, of ‘Crazy World’ fame, is among those to have shopped there.
“All three of us have been musicians and in bands, done gigs, and been on the local scene before we launched the label,” Alex says.
“There are a few labels who work with tapes because of the affordability.

Princes discography is flush with gems, boasting both platinum-selling albums and limited releases. This promo tape, which held the title of most expensive cassette for a few years, was handed out to attendees of a Paris Fashion Week show in 1995. Talk about exclusive.

Development Of Tape Cartridges
The endless loop tape cartridge was first designed in 1952 by Bernard Cousino around a single reel carrying a continuous loop of standard 1/4-inch, plastic, oxide-coated recording tape, running at 3.75 in per second. Program starts and stops were signaled by a one-inch-long metal foil that activated the track-change sensor.
Inventor George Eash invented a design in 1953, called the Fidelipac cartridge. The Eash cartridge was later licensed by manufacturers, notably the Collins Radio Company, which first introduced a cartridge system for broadcasting at the National Association of Broadcasters 1959 annual show. Fidelipac cartridges were used by many radio stations for commercials, jingles, and other short items. Eash later formed the Fidelipac Corporation to manufacture and market tapes and recorders, as did several others, including Audio-Pak .

Cassette tape sales are estimated to have doubled this year compared to 2019.
The British Phonographic Industry, which represents record labels, projects 157,000 tapes will have been sold in the UK in 2020.
That’s the highest number since 2003, when compilation Now 54 – featuring the likes of Busted, Girls Aloud and Oasis – was the biggest seller on tape.
Now, the top sellers are Lady Gaga, 5 Seconds of Summer and Yungblud.

Compact Cassette Tape Types And Formulations
Audio compact cassettes use magnetic tape of three major types which differ in fundamental magnetic properties, the level of bias applied during recording, and the optimal time constant of replay equalization. Specifications of each type were set in 1979 by the International Electrotechnical Commission . By this time, Type I included pure gamma ferric oxide formulations, Type II included ferricobalt and chromium dioxide formulations, and Type IV included metal particle tapes – the best performing, but also the most expensive. In the 1980s the lines between three types blurred. Panasonic developed evaporated metal tapes that could be made to match any of the three IEC types. Metal particle tapes migrated to Type II and Type I, ferricobalt formulations migrated to Type I. By the end of the decade performance of the best Type I ferricobalt tapes approached that of Type IV tapes performance of entry-level Type I tapes gradually improved until the very end of compact cassette production.
Double-layer Type III tape formulations, advanced by Sony and BASF in the 1970s, never gained substantial market presence. ‘Type 0’ was a non-standard designation for early compact cassettes that did not conform to IEC specification in the 21st century it is informally used to denote any low quality or counterfeit cassette.

Described by some as âEuropeâs biggest tech showâ, the Berlin Radio Show has long been famous for exhibiting the next big thing in consumer electronics. In 1963, that was the compact audio cassette, introduced at the time by its creator, the late Dutch engineer Lou Ottens, who died in early March.
Over the course of Ottensâ lifetime, cassette tapes came to redefine listening habits, which until then had been limited to the much more unwieldy vinyl record. Car stereos and the iconic Sony Walkman suddenly made individual listening experiences possible outside of the home. The re-recordable nature of the format, meanwhile, helped music fans collate and circulate their own mixtapes. At its peak in 1989, the cassette tape was shifting 83 million units per year in the UK alone.
Despite having been superseded in functionality first by the compact disc and then the digital file , the audio cassette retains a special place in the history of audio technology, with mixtapes a precursor to playlists, and the Walkman the precursor to the iPod.
And, despite being considered aesthetically and materially inferior to the vinyl record that came before it, the audio cassette is actually experiencing something of a resurgence â partly for sentimental reasons, but also because, with gigs cancelled, itâs a smart way for smaller artists to monetise their work.

User Tapes Vs Super User Tapes
Some Philips documentation distinguishes between “user tapes” and “super user tapes”. Super user tapes are tapes that have a continuously recorded stream of audio, with continuous absolute time codes relative to the start of the tape, and contiguously numbered tracks. In contrast, non-super user tapes may have one or more section that has no absolute time code and tracks that are unnumbered. The Renumber button that makes the recorder find all the track markers on a tape and makes sure that all track numbers are contiguous , only works on super-user tapes.
Other than absolute time codes and track numbers that may become discontinuous or unavailable on a non-super user tape, it’s impossible to distinguish between user tapes and super user tapes.
To make sure that the absolute time codes remain continuous , the user should start every recording at a point where absolute time codes are available. Some recorders have an APPEND button to find the end of the last recording automatically and prepare the recorder for the next recording. When recording mode is engaged , the electronics actually read the tape for a fraction of a second, to synchronize the internal absolute time counter with the time recorded on tape, and then start the actual recording at the beginning of a tape frame so that the resulting data stream has a continuous absolute time code.
