Working Bikes will be spreading bicycle love at the festival, welcoming cyclists to the bike parking and providing air for tires and some quick adjustments to keep the bikes rolling and fitted right to riders. If You Miss Faye Webster See Jamila Woods
When: 6:30-7:15 at the Blue StageComing up in the Atlanta scene, Faye Webster’s music has hints of R& B to its twang. So why not see neo soul/R& B star Jamila Woods in the evening? She’s another Chicago mainstay, having come up in the city’s poetry scene and an active community organizer. Her voice is gorgeous, and her words are even more powerful, so it’s safe to say you’ll be captivated by her performance.

I Knew Quickly That This Was Going To Be A Good Weekend
Sam: I didnt know DEHD beforehand, so had no expectations. But, as soon as we walked in I heard a comforting beach-rock Loner and sang the lyrics. I did in fact know DEHD, just not by name, and Ill never make such a careless mistake again. DEHD was eccentric and invigorating, the perfect start to Pitchfork 2021. I loved the rhythm changes the band produced and they have that Twin Peaks Chicago indie rock vibe. Their lead Emily Kempf has a coolness and individual sense that I have mad respect for. After this set, I knew quickly that this was going to be a good weekend.
Mairead: Pitchfork was my first ever music fest and DEHD was the first artist at Pitchfork we saw. A great start to see a local band from Chicago. They have a chill summer vibe but also a unique sound. I had never heard of the band before the festival but I am excited to listen to more of their music after the fact.
Sam: We hopped into this set for a few minutes to check out the Blue stage. DJ Nate, a Chicago native artist, was going off with his beats. He had a blend of electronics and rap that he weaved together nicely. Ultimately great to get in touch with other aspects of the Chicago music scene, including his Juke tracks, with roots in the Chicago house scene.
Sam: Hop Along was another new one for me, and I appreciated their ~undercurrents~ female lead punk-rock. A good genre, and a good band. I have few other thoughts but that.

The Most Stylish Set Of The Day
Caroline PolachekWhen: 4:15-5:10 at the Green StageEver since indie pop group Chairlift disbanded in 2017, their frontwoman Caroline Polachek’s star has only grown. Now a solo pop act, Polachek makes chic, dreamy alt-pop that feels as if its from another realm with her ethereal, high-pitched voice. She has an eye for fashionable aesthetics that feel just a tad dark in the coolest way, so she’ll definitely make the stage her own. The lead single from her upcoming sophomore album “Bunny is a Rider” is a bop, so fingers crossed she previews even more new releases during her afternoon set.
So Keeping That In Mind In Addition To The Wide Range Of Other Projects I Was Responsible For At The Same Time Plus Having Both Of My Creative Leaders Recently Leave Pitchfork I Had To Be Especially Strategic With My Design Approach
Art direction from a past festival, utilizing organic shapes, soft color gradients, and a pastel variant of our RGB color palette.
Over the previous several years, we incorporated some element of handmade grit with bright, summer-y editions of our standard red, green, and blue color palette , appealing to the dirt/grit of the festival lifestyle.
These have all been beautiful and served our purposes well, but I felt that it was time to break out of that overarching direction wed followed for so long. I wondered, how might we push the branding into something that feels totally new, but maintains a relevant appeal to our audience?
The graphics needed to be quickly and easily editable for the long list of deliverables theyd be utilized for, so I devised a design direction that supported those needs while refreshing the brand for the new festival season.
I came up with a grid pattern designed as a dynamic foundation for creating all visuals in a way that kept the branding fresh throughout the entire festival rollout. This also supported alternate color combinations and palette adjustments for partnership activations.
Overall, this direction significantly decreased design production time, while maintaining our brands expectations for exceptional creativity and quality.
Just wanted to say that this year’s art design for the fest is especially great. One of my favorites from the years. Great work from you and your team.

I Took The Lead On Creative Direction & Interactive Design For This Particular Pitchfork Endeavor One Last Time Before Moving Into Management The Following Year
For the purposes of this case study, Ill focus on my role as Art Director and Interactive Design Lead in 2017, the festivals 11th year in the running and my last year owning these responsibilities before moving further into management. Forty artists would perform on three stages across three days.
After spending one week at the NYC offices collaborating with a Condé Nast product designer, I had to finalize the art direction and move into designing the responsive website mockups back at our Chicago office.
My key stakeholders were the President and the Editorial Director of Pitchfork, and I collaborated closely with an in-house engineer on the integration of each phase of the announcement rollout, including the app design through a third-party vendor.

Designing Across Experiences For Pitchforks Largest Live Event: The Annual Three
Throughout my six-year tenure at Pitchfork, my involvement in Pitchfork Music Festival Chicago quickly grew from design production to leadership, and covered just about every type of design assignment you can imagine.
From designing the merchandise booth and everything within it, to owning the end-to-end digital and print products, even coordinating with the union workers during production week to ensure the stage banners were hung properly, it was a wild ride to say the least!

Pitchfork Festival 2021 Lineup
Back in January, there were reports that the Pitchfork Music Festival hoped to return to Chicagos Union Park in September. Today, we learn that those reports were entirely correct. After cancelling last year, Pitchfork will come to Chicago two months later than usual, on the weekend of 9/10-12. All three of its healiners are women: Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent, and Erykah Badu.
Bridgers was actually booked to play the 2020 version of the Pitchfork Festival, though she wasnt at the top of the bill back then. Some of the other artists on this years just-unveiled lineup were also supposed to play last year, but this isnt a case of a 2020 festival being moved to the next year. This years bill is notably diverse, and its also notably heavy on female artists.
The Pitchfork lineup also includes Big Thief, Angel Olsen, Flying Lotus, Animal Collective, Jay Electronica, Kim Gordon, Thundercat, Danny Brown, Cat Power, Waxahatchee, Ty Segall & Freedom Band, Armand Hammer, Jamila Woods, Bartees Strange, Caroline Polachek, the Fiery Furnaces, Yves Tumor, Yaeji, Black Midi, Dogleg, Andy Shauf, Hop Along, Maxo Kream, Georgia Ann Muldrow, Oso Oso, the Weather Station, Kelly Lee Owens, Faye Webster, Ela Minus, DEHD, the Soft Pink Truth, DJ Nate, KeiyaA, Mariah The Scientist, Cassandra Jenkins, Amaarae, Divino Niño, Horsegirl, and Special Interest. Le Bataclan welcomes the avant-garde of the bustling London jazz scene: Sons of Kemet, Nubya Garcia and cktrl.
Led by saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, Sons of Kemet released their 4th album Black to the Future in May. The quartet delivers a new rhythmic and militant manifesto which has its origins in the Black Live Matters movement. Black to the Future modernizes the protest works of 60s / 70s jazz based on edgy percussion and unmatched groove.
Another saxophonist will share the Bataclan scene: Nubya Garcia. The young Londoner explores styles and plays on nuances by mixing her jazz with broken beat, soul, dubstep and sounds of the African diaspora, from cumbia to calypso.

Leah Schiffman Festival Attendee
Even though its Leahs fourth time attending Pitchfork theres no denying the magic is still there. I think its the most important music festival in Chicago for me.
Of course, part of the draw is the music, but for Leah, Pitchfork is also about creating a community. People really dress up and show out so you can see everyones individuality.
After memorable performances from Lauryn Hill and Schoolboy Q in years past, shes looking forward to Thundercat, Yves Tumor, and Erykah Badu on Sunday.

Latesha First Year Festival Attendee
The common thread amongst Pitchfork attendees isnt just their love for music but their curiosity to explore and find new favorites at the fest. Latesha, who was attending for the first time, was sorting out the feelings of live shows. Its really weird to be listening to live music again at a festival.
Despite noting a huge difference in peoples willingness to go all in at sets, shes enjoyed every set shes seen, especially Phoebe Bridgers. Being in the crowd was crazy and then she performed I Know the End and I was like wow even though Im watching this on a screen, this is the best concert ever.
Each And Every One Of The Headliners
When: 8:30-9:50 at the Green StageWhether you can make it to all three days of Pitchfork or you’ve only got tickets to one, you should make it a mission to see the headliners, who are all womenâa true rarity for this year. As noted, Phoebe Bridgers is a rising talent who closes out Friday night contemporary rock/indie icon St. Vincent is sure to wow you with her incredible guitar skills on Saturday and legacy act Erykah Badu is an R& B/hip-hop artist for the ages who’s closing out the show on Sunday.
