This musical adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon series follows our favorite undersea creatures as they embark on an adventure to save Bikini Bottom from an undersea volcano that would destroy the town forever. It gives Squidward Tentacles tap shoes, Patrick Star a posse and Spongebob Squarepants an amazing singing voice. This family-friendly event is bringing to life all your favorite characters from the beloved cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. Joining the original Broadway cast is Tom Kenny as Patchy the Pirate. Kenny voiced many characters for the original cartoon, including the title character, Patchy the Pirate, Gary the Snail, Hans, the French Narrator, and various other characters.
For the musical simulcast, hell be performing Poor Pirates, a song written for the musical by the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles.
Ive had a blast portraying live-action suburban buccaneer and President of the SpongeBob SquarePants Fan Club, Patchy the Pirate, since the characters first appearance in season two of SpongeBob SquarePants way back in 2000, said Kenny in a press release. I loved The SpongeBob Musical, and I was thrilled to be included in it both in pre-recorded and songwriter forms! But to now have the opportunity to actually step on stage and perform alongside members of the original Broadway production is truly a unique honor. Its meta times ten, and I think Nickelodeons audience will really get a kick out of it!
In the musical, SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the potential of total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises and takes center stage.
Is It Any Good
What this stage production offers in visual appeal offsets a story that sometimes gets lost in its own multiple directions. It begins with SpongeBob’s appeals to his boss, Mr. Krabs , for management consideration at the Krusty Krab, then swerves unexpectedly into a;volcanic devastation plot, drops in Sheldon’s maniacal scheming to accelerate the disaster for his own gain and Squidward’s efforts to stay relevant, distracts Patrick with a bizarre fan club of sardines, and winds up with an unexpected hero attempting to save the day. It’s not a seamless story by any means, and it’s often really silly, but it does entertain with quality musical performances and impressive visual effects.
Parents who watch alongside their kids may find The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! a helpful means of introducing them to the concept of stage performances through characters they already know. This production does an excellent job recreating Bikini Bottom and its colorful inhabitants through costumes, creative stagecraft, and physical acting that truly impresses in parts. Slater is good in the lead role, and Sajous delights as Sandy, but Lee owns the stage as the multi-tentacled Squidward whenever he’s around. Ultimately the story is secondary to the visual and musical components in this production that has potential to entertain a range of ages.
