Are All Your Collaborators Included

How to RE-RELEASE a song with DistroKid (after removing)

One of the best ways to make good music is collaboration. Its the reason why we built in collaboration features into your LANDR libraryso you can make the best music, in the best way, easier.

Releasing music is a great time to celebrate those collaborations. And the best way to do that is to add featured artists while youre building your release.

If youre not sure if someone should be featured on your track or not, your best bet is to always discuss it with your collaborator and make sure everyone has the same expectations and definition of featured artist.

Typically featured artists provide things like solos, lyrics, or entire sections of songs.

But no matter what always discuss your ideas for featuring artists before you wrap your projects and release them.

Changing or removing featured artists after you release is possible, but its a headache and your creative relationships within your network are at stake if you dont acknowledge a collaboration where someone thought they deserved it.

So take care of that conversation BEFORE you build your release and acknowledge everyone that made your record as good as it is.

Get Your Singles In Playlists

Get your tracks featured in targeted playlists. Assign Spotify playlist promotion to one bandmate or team member, while others focus on other things. Look at the about sections of other artists on Spotify. Notice the Discovered On section tells you which playlists included that artist. Click over to the playlist and sometimes you will find a submission form link or email address in the playlist description. If not, you will need to search for this person on Facebook, Instagram, or Soundcloud. Reach out to them with a brief submission email. Just make sure its not a playlist that will get you a lot of skips.

Mistake to Avoid: Submitting too late. Official playlist curators value new music. The Spotify for Artists portal wont accept song submissions after release date. Submit for playlists between six and two weeks prior to the release of a particular track. For listener or user playlists on Spotify, the day of release is fine. If youre signed, your label/distributor will want you to submit much further out, sometimes 3 or 4 months before release date.

Get All Your Ducks In A Row Before The Release

Again, theres a lot of options for creatively communicating the message that you have a new song out. But it always amazes me how long it takes to compose an email newsletter or write a Facebook post. I think, oh, thats just a couple minutes, and then suddenly an hour has gone by. For that reason, youll want to prepare all assets well ahead of the launch date so you can focus on promotion once the song is out.

And as I mentioned above, be sure to notify your distributor, publicist, any industry contacts, licensing experts, and so forth, way in advance.

This also means youll need to have an easy way to share a private link to your single: SoundCloud, Bandcamp, etc.

Prepare Your Press Kit

It is essential to prepare and update your press kit for every project you release. A press kit generally accompanies your music to give more information about your artist brand and the release. Some of the items that go into a press kit include your artist bio, artist images, press release, artist rider and of course, your music. Remember to update your artist bio to include new developments in your career since your last release. Update your artist images to include current photos that best represent your brand. One convenient way of packaging your press kit is creating an electronic press kit .

Signing A Record Deal After A Self Release

One caveat – if getting signed to a label is your goal, be aware that when you self-release an album, a label may hesitate to release that album again in the future. If you’ve already gotten press attention for those songs, the label won’t be able to promote them again. In that case, consider either holding back some of your songs or continue to write and record new ones while working your release to give a label new material to work with.

However Just As A Song Can Stand Apart From An Album A Musical Moment Can Stand Apart From The Song

How To Release Your Music On All Platforms In 2021

What does that mean? Well, were living in a short-form video age.

Theres no such thing as too much content, and with the huge popularity of TikTok, IG Stories, IGTV, YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, and other platforms where users are hungry for quick videos, you dont have to make all your videos the length of the whole track.

Find the BEST moment in your song, then ask:

  • How can this moment inspire listeners to make videos of their own ?
  • Can I shoot a short original video to this 15 seconds of music?
  • Can I find good royalty-free or pubic domain footage to add to this 15 seconds of music?
  • Can I post a bunch of DIFFERENT video content for the same 15 seconds, reenforcing the hook?
  • What will get people on Instagram Stories to answer questions or engage with a poll?
  • Once you dig into this, you might realize theres a difference between the song thats perfect for your existing fans, and a moment thats perfect for viral attention. In either case, the single shouldnt suck. But not every song needs to be a fully-produced masterpiece either. Well talk more about this below.

Should You Release Your Own Music For Free

I cant stop listening to this album and so far, Its my ...

To free or not to free. That is the question.

When I started Cut Records, I decided that I wanted to release music for free. Not just my own, but more importantly other peoples!

I was seeing highly respected and established artists giving away their music for free in places like Sendspace, Mediafire, Megaupload and places like Soundcloud too.

The main problem with all of these though, was not the platform, it was the release.

Instead of having some nice artwork, a bit of information, and having the music tagged, properly named and ready for consumption, I was seeing the opposite. And it was infuriating me.

I get frustrated easily, you can imagine!

Hastily thrown together artwork, badly mixed and mastered tracks, varying formats, no tagging, no naming convention, expiring links, and really just zero care and attention given to the entire process.

If you intend on giving away your music for free, do yourself AND everyone else a favour, and at least do it properly.

With Cut, I made sure tracks were mastered, tagged and packaged nicely with good artwork. I put them on a platform properly and collected email addresses and shares in return for downloading and I allowed people to donate if they wished. This allowed me to off-set my masterings and various other costs.

Sadly, this model wasnt scaleable but thats another post

The Most Effective Way To Release Your Music In 2020

When teaching or consulting independent bands recently, these are the two groups of questions I get most frequently.

Should I release music for streaming, download, or physical?

Should I release a single, EP, or album?

The answer to these questions in 2020 is, yes. Thats the truth about the industry today, you need to do it all. The real key is understanding how you should release your music in this current fractured music landscape, and why.

First, some ground rules. Set aside your preconceived notions about how your fans want musicyou probably dont know, and you certainly dont know how prospective fans may want it. Forget about the romance of an album, or your disdain for singlesthat doesnt matter, you can do both. Also set aside how you like you like to consume music, as a musician, because you are an outlier.

Fans today are splintered some love just playlists and are looking for a perfect song to add , some want to find albums and dive in deeply to catalog, some still want to support with actual dollars and own your music by direct download or physical. Its maddening, but thats the market. But there is good news, by using digital distributors like DistroKid and others, its very affordable to release multiple singles, EPs and albums. CD printing and on-demand vinyl printing is more affordable than ever, and for downloads its hard to beat Bandcamp.

  • Potential exposure. While not guaranteed, if your music gets featured, the website it’s featured on will help push it more, meaning more people will download your songs.

To Label Or Not To Label

Most people who self release, tend to release more than one thing by themselves. This means a series of EPs, albums, singles or at the very least more than one.

If you are planning this, it would be a wise move to consider creating some sort of label to release them on.

your music may be self-released but it is a good idea to still use a name for the entity which will release the music. It will make more sense when you get to the distribution stage and will help you group releases if you are releasing to Beatport, iTunes or other larger stores.

For now, you can get away with only creating the name of the label, and think about a catalogue numbering system, but it would also be worth thinking about whether you want to officially register your label, get ISRCs, and everything else associated with running your own label.

Coming up with a catalogue numbering is something you have flexibility on. Often its a series of letters and numbers to identify the release, which help you and others recognise each one.

For Echodubs digital releases I used EDUB001, EDUB002 etc. For our free releases I used EDUBF001, EDUBF002 and for our free albums I used ECHO001, ECHO002 and so on. This was just something I chose because it made sense to me.

An ISRC is a unique code assigned to every recording. In the UK, the PPL is the appointed agency for them, but you may be offered ISRCs from your distributor if they are already set up to generate them.

Find Time To Enjoy The Process

How do I find a writer for my music bio and press release?

The truth is that releasing music is stressful and complicated. There are a lot of moving parts, and its common for it to feel like an unenjoyable hassle. But when the work is done and the song is out , take time to enjoy the fact that you are doing something incredibly dope: putting music into the world.

Every time I release music, I get my hopes extremely high that it will be well-received. Sometimes it is. But sometimes its not.

For my last few releases , I make sure to take a moment on release day to get in my car, turn the volume up, roll my windows down, and drive for a while to my own song. I dont mean for it to be narcissistic at all I just try to allow myself the admission that its a really cool thing to be able to make music and have it where the world can hear it. Its essentially a gratitude ritual, and it helps music feel less like a job and more like a privilege and a gift.

So, whatever kind of music you make, while youre releasing it, find time to be proud of yourself and grateful for it. Any way to remove yourself from the world of comparison and people-pleasing in the middle of a release cycle is bound to make the process more enjoyable. And I think it probably leads to better music, too.
