When Is The New High School Musical

Look Forward To High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: This Time They Do A Different Musical

Troy, Gabriella – Start of Something New (From “High School Musical”)

Even though the show doesnt premiere on Disney+ until November 12, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has already gotten renewed a second season, and Federle promises hes got a few ideas about what could happen in it.

The great thing about a drama department is every year the teacher announces a new show and then everybody screams and gets excited or they hate it, he said over the phone before the show was officially renewed. I think the model would be that we expand beyond the High School Musical universe and we still shoot at East High in Utah, but we start tackling other shows. Can they do Gypsy, and is there a meta role somewhere for Bernadette Peters?

‘high School Musical’s Joshua Bassett On Ricky’s Growth And New Rivals

The goal? Swim to the top of the Alan Menken Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater . Naturally, Miss Jenn doesnt want to miss a chance to top her ex, signing up East High for the competition, where theyll perform Beauty and the Beast without star vocalist Nini .

Theres definitely a rivalry, Hough says of Zach and Jenn, in the video interview above. My character is definitely an antagonist, creating a little friction and that little push to compete. Sounds like a tale as old as time. Bonus: Hough teases that hell be putting on his singing and dancing shoes for the sophomore season as well.

Check out our full TV Insider interview with Hough in the video above.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Season 2 Premiere, Friday, May 14, Disney+

You Wont See Anyone Named Troy Or Gabriella But You Will See Characters Playing Them

The original High School Musical deploys a lot of standard archetypes the jock who ends up in the musical the misfit transfer student the blonde, fabulous, intimidating Sharpay which the series updates for the Gen-Z era with a different set of students who arent necessarily one-to-one matches for the characters they play on the show within a show.

For the pseudo-Troy, theres Ricky , whos not a jock but is always watching skate stunts on YouTube, and who finds musicals ridiculous . Over the summer, he and his girlfriend Nini took a Friends-ish pause and arent quite clear where things stand, especially since shes recently felt the start of something new with the hunky, water-polo player EJ , whos also in contention to play Troy. Shes this series pseudo-Gabriella, always the chorus girl but never the star of the musical, who wants to play Gabriella in the high-school musical herself, though shes up against the Über-competitive transfer student Gina . Yes, there are shades of Karen and Ivy at work here. If the worst thing my show gets compared to is Smash with acne, Federle said. I will die a happy man.

Can I Get A Recap Of The Show I Mean

Olivia Rodrigo – Start of Something New (HSMTMTS | Nini Version | Disney+)

Sure. After assuming that next years play would be High School Musical 2, the cast and crew spent most of Episode 1 preparing their renditions of Fabulous. But no one was more prepared than Ricky . Determined to be Ninis onstage romantic interest two years in a row, he spent most of the episode practicing Zac Efrons classic Bet on It moves.

But at the New Years party Miss Jenn threw everyone for a loop. Instead of announcing more of Troy and Gabriella, she revealed that the play this year would be Beauty and the Beast. Why? To make East High competition eligible, of course. That wasnt the only big revelation in this first episode. Nini announced that she was accepted into a prestigious performing arts school in Denver. Whats everyone, especially Ricky, going to do without her?

Ouch. Her BFF revealed just how hard Nini took the breakup, saying that Nini holed up in her room for days after Ricky gave her the boot. We can’t blame her for her actions. Anyone in that position would have been heartbroken.

Her Song Got Sung At Ricky’s Audition

Ricky made the blunder of a lifetime when he could not return Nini’s “I love you” when she professed her feelings for him on their first anniversary. In hopes of showing her that he still needs her by his side, he decides to sing the song that she wrote at the school musical auditions. The question on everyone’s mind is: will that gesture be enough for Nini to fall back into his arms? We love a good love story, so we are totally hoping that the answer is yes.

None Of The Original Cast Are Returning Yet

If you were hoping that some of the original characters would return to the halls of East High as teachers, or parents, or ANYTHING really, don’t get your hopes up. While most of the original cast has expressed excitement over the prospect of a High School Musical 4, they have pretty much dashed any hope of reprising their iconic roles.

Ashley Tisdale, who played Sharpay in the original three movies, said that she wouldn’t go back to reprise her role.

“I honestly don’t think I would, just based off of, I don’t know if I could fill her shoes again,” Tisdale told E! News. “I’ve matured so much, I just don’t know if I could give her justice Sharpay and be that character again. And I would hate to not have it be great.”

This isn’t the first time Ashley shut down rumors of a return. She previously talked with New You about what made HSM such a big hit.

“Looking back, it was such a perfect thing for its time and was so pure that I just dont know how you go from there. High School Musical didnt make us, we made High School Musical because of our friendship, how close we were, and the magic there at the time. Kenny Ortega just made it what it was. Disney is an amazing company so Im sure theyll find some way to do it.”

Moving Away From The Movies

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Official Trailer

When Federle pitched High School Musical: The Musical: The Series to Disney executives, he told them he envisioned a series that pays tribute to our roots, which are spiritually and literally and geographically at East High. But sort of expanding the way we tell stories, expanding the way we use music, expanding the characters so that its not all sort of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens in-jokes.

That is, without offending fans of the original 2006 movie and its two sequels. The first movie introduced us to Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez , who sang and danced their way through auditions and performances of their high school musical, and fell in love along the way. The cast returned for two sequels HSM2 revolved around summer vacation, and HSM3 was subtitled Senior Year. All three filmed at Salt Lake Citys East High, although the setting was Albuquerque.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series revived the franchise in 2019 with a series about fictional theater kids at the real East High in Salt Lake City. It pays tribute to and pokes fun at the HSM phenomenon as evidenced by the title.

In the beginning, all the chatter was about what are they doing to my High School Musical? Which is completely understandable, said Federle. And now, its so much about, like, whats going to happen with Ricky and Gina? Whats going to happen with Ricky and Nini? What new song is Olivia Rodrigo writing?
