But unfortunately you cant play music from Apple Music or Spotify. You only pay for a personal license from platforms like Spotify.
Twitch was working to create a huge library of music that streamers will be able to play while they stream, this was supported by labels such as Monstercat, Fools Gold, Mad Decent and Rhymesayers. The library used to be found at music.twitch.tv but it has since disappeared!
How do some streamers play music? They are either big enough they can ask permission to the big record labels, management and artists or they are breaking the law and risking being sued and banned from Twitch. Simple as that!

What Happens If You Play Copyrighted Music On Twitch Without Permission Or License
Heres what Twitch music policy says:
if there is copyrighted material in the content shared on your channel and you have not received explicit permission to use that material from the rights holder, you are at risk of receiving a DMCA takedown notification.
More specifically these things may happen:
1. Your audio will be muted
If Twitch detects copyrighted audio in your content, it will automatically mute that portion of the VOD. As you can imagine, this will create awkward gaps in videos with no dialogue.
2. Your channel will be banned for 24 hours
If copyright owner issues a DMCA takedown request against your channel, you will be banned for 24 hours. Record labels representing top 40 artists are well known for sending mass DMCA takedowns notices.
3. You will be permanently banned from Twitch
Twitch has a three strike policy for DMCA takedowns. When you get 3 takedowns you will be permanently banned from Twitch. This will be the end of your Twitch career.
If you ignore Twitch music policy, your stream or VOD can get muted and you risk getting a permanent ban on your channel.

Twitch Makes Deal With Nmpa But Streamers Still Cant Play Licensed Music
Twitchs 2020 was largely defined by four letters: D, M, C and A. Midway through the year, the Amazon-owned live-streaming platform ran afoul of the music industry, resulting in thousands of takedown notices powered by the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act . In compliance with these notices, Twitch forced streamers to remove thousands of clips and VODs that featured licensed music their entire archives, in some cases. Streamers were not happy about it. Now, more than a year later, Twitch has managed to strike a deal with the National Music Publishers Association. Unfortunately for streamers, it does not mean they are allowed to play licensed music.
Today Twitch sent an email to streamers detailing the terms of the deal, which has been rumored for a while most recently in a report by Billboard published last week.
As part of this agreement, we want to let you know about a new process that we are creating that participating music rights holders can opt into to report certain uses of their music, which is more flexible and forgiving to creators who inadvertently or incidentally use music in their streams than the existing process required under the DMCA and similar global laws, Twitch wrote in its email. This new process does not change how music can be used on Twitch. As weve said consistently, its never okay to include music in your channel unless youve secured the necessary rights or have the authority to do so.

The answer is yes, but not all. According to the community guidelines on Twitch, there’re three types of music you can use on your stream:

Music Owned by You Original music which was written by you and either recorded or performed live by you, and for which you own or control all rights necessary to share the music on Twitch, including the rights to the recording, performance, and to the underlying music and lyrics. 2. Music Licensed To You Copyrighted music owned in whole or part by someone other than you, if you have secured a license to share it on Twitch from the relevant copyright holders.

In a nutshell, you can only play songs that you own or don’t have copyright protection. You can play songs from Spotify, but only those songs that you own or aren’t copyrighted. And these are the types of music content you should avoid in your streams: radio-style music listening show, DJ set, karaoke performance, lip synch performance, visual music depiction, cover song performance.

- Any original music. If youre the one who wrote the particular piece, youre completely free to add it as the soundtrack.
