What Is The Best Music Distribution Service

Can I Distribute My Music Myself For Free Using Spotify And Apple Music

What’s the Best Music Distribution Service for The Spotify Method?!

On the emergence of digital marketplace, the physical music distribution industry has gradually dwindled away.

During the transition phase, the big names in physical distribution market made pages to guide artists to upload their works for online distribution. Using these open resources, many artists managed to land their scores in the major online distribution platforms like iTunes, Amazon etc.

However, with the growth of streaming services, the dependency on distribution platforms has increased. Although its still possible to upload your songs on your own for free, its neither convenient nor as effective as using the proven distribution companies.

This method is also preferred by the streaming companies as it offers them a constantly updating source of new music.

In a nutshell, the idea of distributing music on your own to different online stores may seem alluring, but its not worth taking that much pain.

The money that you can possibly save by doing it yourself is negligible compared to the time and energy youll end up spending on it.

What Do Music Distribution Companies Do

Digital music distribution companies act as intermediaries between artists and listening platforms that live online.

Theres a massive amount of non-musical procedural work that goes into listening to an artists work, categorizing it, and putting it on a music platform, and the role of distribution companies is to handle that work on behalf of you, the musician.

Working with a distribution company will essentially take music from your computer and give you the chance to share it with the world by making it available on platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, and others. If youve ever wondered how an artist got their work on a big streaming platform, a digital music distributor is almost certainly how they did it.

How To Get A Deal With A Digital Music Distribution Company

One of the best things about the modern music industry is inclusiveness and conditions that make representation of artists working at every level possible.

Physical music distribution is a whole lot more expensive and complicated to pull off than digital distribution, which is one of the reasons its available to virtually anyone who wants to share music. In the old music industry, youd have to ink a deal with a label to get your physical music sent to stores, but things dont work like that anymore.

Most digital distributors work with musicians for a fee, whether through the form of direct yearly payments or revenue-sharing models. Ambitious new distribution companies are even sprouting up with business models that offer completely free services to artists, though its important to note that its impossible to tell if theyll be successful over the long term and what would happen to the music theyve distributed if they fail.

Most companies will be eager to earn your business for a fee.

10 Best Music Distribution Services & Companies of 2019 ...

You probably know the answer to this already.

It depends.

It depends on your needs, your wants, and your expectations out of the distribution service to begin with.

If you want to go with trusted distribution names such as CD Baby and TuneCore, then you need to know that theyre not going to be cheap.

Other popular options came into the fray later on in 2013 when Distrokid showed up and became the most popular independent digital alternative, and LANDR started only in 2017 as an automated online mastering service.

If you want tracks to be remastered then LANDR would be your go-to distributor.

Another company thats making headlines is Amuse.io, considered as the worlds first mobile record company. Amuse.io is an app-only service that provides 100% free distribution. They dont charge fees and you keep 100% of the royalties.

And theres just a whole lot of distributors that can provide you with what you need.

Im Struggling To Understand Where The 15% Is Beneficial When They Arent Able To Deliver Real Results Over The Other Music Distribution Companies

As a top contender in the list of major music distribution companies, they claim to be great at throwing gasoline on the fire. AWAL doesnt offer much in terms of personal support from the get-go, BUT if you start to catch, they can offer you marketing support and pitch you to playlists. And potentially upstream you to Kobalt and their in-house sync services .

Its worth noting that they do have some pretty huge artists, namely Lauv who they helped get a top 40 hit. But again, this was because he was buzzing and they jumped on it.

Number of Outlets:

Its very tough to get an accurate number from anyone. I got a complete list from Ditto, ReverbNation and Mondotunes, but they claimed they hit more stores than their list stated. All distribution companies said numbers fluctuate so much because many outlets are sub distributors who send your music to stores they are partnered with. The outlets listed on each distributors site are just the biggest. Mondotunes has by far the most . While Ditto seems to be a close second claiming they hit all stores. It seems CD Baby, Tunecore, Reverbnation and DistroKid send it to about the same places, while Loudr are very clear they only support the ones listed. At some point this numbers game got way too absurd.

Should You Really Consider Uploading Your Songs To Spotify

Spotifys userbase has increased exponentially, from 36 million active users recorded in 2013 to about 191 million active users in December of 2018, even after getting attacked by Radioheads Thom Yorke in his controversial anti-Spotify tirade.

Yorke is probably one of the best lyricists of his generation, but made headlines when he told Mexican publication Sopitas that Spotify was something that musicians needed to fight against.

He also said that the industrys reliance on the platform was similar to the last desperate fart of a dying corpse.

But lets be honest here. Streaming has propelled the growth of the music industry for three consecutive years and in 2017, Yorkes solo content was made available on Spotify for the first time in 4 years after his tirade.

Does this mean that hes softened up his stance on being anti-Spotify? Most likely.

But theres one more thing that musicians do actually need to fight against, and its Spotifys payment to artists.

In fact the topic is far from being over.

The music industry is still disputing over how much money Spotify is giving its performers this year, but this time, the discussion is now focused on HOW rather than HOW MUCH.

In accordance with other streaming services, Spotify pays out to music rights holders through a pro rata model, meaning that a firm pools all of the distributable income it generates each month and divides it based on track popularity.

Fair, right?

How Much They Charge You

The biggest factor that can affect your decision to hire a distributor is how much they charge for their services.

There are those that charge an annual fee, which is usually broken into different tiers based on how many songs you plan to release.

Other companies may charge a one-time fee when you upload your content. Rates are different for singles as opposed to albums, and this is the best option for musicians who release projects less frequently.

Then there are those that dont charge any fee to distribute music. They simply take a cut out of your profit. It may sound a bit off when distributors cut into your profits, but note that these distributors only get paid when you get paid.

Digital Distribution Deals: How To Choose The Best Company

Platforms such as Spotify and iTunes dont allow musicians to directly upload their content.

They only deal with their list of approved distributors or digital distribution aggregators.

If youre planning to launch your album online, youre going to want to secure a digital distribution deal through what they call a digital distribution aggregator.

Much like physical distributors, they upload your music to various outlets in exchange for a fee. They dont own the rights to your music, but theyll just help you distribute it.

A musician can work with multiple distributors but only one distributor can handle one release.

So what differentiates one distributor from the next?

How Do You Get A Traditional Music Distributor

The music industry is a billion-dollar industry that anyone can get into. And its not only musicians who can make money from this industry.

Opportunities like being a distributor for music labels is one way of getting into the music business.

A lot of people confuse music distribution with license deals. A distribution deal is where you get your albums and CDs to music shops and other platforms nationwide. Physical distributors earn a commission for each sale made while the record label behind the CDs handles the promotions.

Meanwhile, a licensing deal involves the licensee or third-party company buying the rights to promote, produce, and distribute music in whatever method they want.

They keep all the profit they make from sales of CDs and other products.

Its crucial for musicians to hire music distributors if they want to see their albums in shops and on online platforms.

But the task of finding one is easier said than done. This guide should provide you with insights on what to look for in a distributor:

I Have Gotten More Complaints From Readers About Ditto Than Any Other Digital Music Distributors On The List

And worst of all, complaints that Ditto rips down releases and doesnt pay their artists. This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.

All in all, even though Ditto has a great marketing department and even though they have rapidly expanded to two countries with multiple offices and even though there are very good people who work there, I cannot recommend them in this Ditto Music review.

There Is No Best Music Distribution Company Necessarily Because Each Company Has Unique Features That May Be Super Important To Some Artists And Not At All To Others

Music distribution, best music distribution companies

Every artists situation is different.

I included on the chart the categories that I deemed most important. All the digital distribution companies have extra services, and I included some of their services in their review if I thought they were great and left out some of their services if I didnt care about them.
