Six The Musical: New West End Queens Announced
Divorced. Beheaded. Live!
For the first time in the show’s her-story, the West End production of Six is getting an entirely new cast! From 16th November 2021 six new Queens will take to the Vaudeville stage along with brand new alternates and swings.
The current cast which includes some of the show’s original members from the Edinburgh production will be playing their final performance on Sunday 14th November.
Come Up With A Concept
In the fall of 2016, Marlow scored a win. He was chosen to write an original musical that the Cambridge University Musical Theater Society would bring to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe that next summer.
He didnt know what the subject would be, but he had established four guiding principles, reflecting his politics and passions: It would have a cast that was predominantly female or nonbinary it would have a famous subject matter it would experiment with theatrical form, and the genre would be pop .
Ideas started to percolate: Real Housewives of Shakespeare? A back story for the three witches of Macbeth? How about something on the six wives of Henry VIII? That could be interesting.
A few weeks later, Marlows mind started to wander during a supervision Cambridge lingo for a small-group session led by a professor. The class was practicing comparative poetry analysis, but Marlow was more concerned with the six wives. Wait, what if its a pop concert? he thought. And they could have, like, microphones! He made a note to himself: Need Lucy!
This is where the story gets a little woo-woo. Marlow had been reading Antonia Frasers The Wives of Henry VIII. When he tracked down Moss, it turned out she had just left Frasers house she was friendly with the authors grandson.
Moss: I remember thinking, That sounds like it could be so bad. It could be really twee. So I remember being like, If we do this, lets just make sure its not bad.
The die was cast.

Edmontons Citadel Theatre Nabs Canadian Premiere Of Hit London Musical Six
This article was published more than 3 years ago. Some information may no longer be current.
Six the Musical will make its Canadian premier at Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre.
Citadel Theatre artistic director Daryl Cloran has landed the Canadian premiere of another pop musical with its sights on Broadway.
Six: Divorced. Beheaded. Live in Concert, a hit on Londons West End that reimagines Henry VIIIs wives as a Spice Girls-style group on a reunion tour, will play Edmonton in November of 2019 in between a summer run at Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and an expected New York debut.
Its a pretty spectacular production and the music is fantastic, says Cloran, who announced the Citadels full 2019-20 season on Monday. I was at a packed matinee surrounded by 20-year-olds having the times of their lives.
Cloran got his chance to see Six, which is written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, while he was visiting Britains National Theatre in November to check in on another show the Citadel had a hand in developing: Anais Mitchells Hadestown.
That myth-inspired musical, which played at the Citadel in 2017 and now has a March opening set for Broadway, helped boost the Edmonton regional theatres profile and opened the door to more international collaborations, Cloran said.
Six isnt the only hit musical production coming from elsewhere to the Citadels 2019-20 season – another is one Cloran himself created.
The Making Of Six: How Tudor Queens Turned Into Pop Stars
A cheeky musical about the ill-fated wives of Henry VIII is already a hit in Britain, on TikTok and on cruise ships. Now it is aiming to establish sovereignty on Broadway.
Spoiler alert: Things generally havent gone well for women who married King Henry VIII.
Six, a slyly saucy pop musical about the ill-starred queens, has already stormed stages in Britain, North America, Australia and even on cruise ships. Embraced by a youthful fan base for its catchy score, it has been fast-tracked to Broadway, where it is previewing to full houses at the 1,027-seat Brooks Atkinson Theater before opening March 12.
The show, just 80 minutes long, has a simple conceit Theyre Tudor queens! And theyre pop stars! as it imagines a concert in which the women compete for audience approval with songs describing marital misfortune . Think wall-to-wall wordplay about sex and schism, belted by a diverse group of performers whose style, sound and steps are inspired by superstars including Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.
Six is the remarkably recent brainchild of two remarkably young theater-lovers: Toby Marlow, a 25-year-old who refers to Beyoncé and Lady Gaga as my mums, and Lucy Moss, a droll 26-year-old who wears Harry Potter spectacles and neon-detailed Buffalo platform sneakers.
There are analog keepsakes too handwritten notes they made along the way. Heres how they developed Six, illustrated by artifacts from their creative collaboration.

What Is Six The Musical About Full Plot Synopsis
Six The Musical is a one-act musical with a running time of around 75 minutes. Although mostly sung-through, there are some short dialogue scenes in between some of the songs.
Its performed as a fictional singing competition where each of Henry VIIIs infamous six wives are competing to be crowned the ultimate musical sensation based on how much BS they had to put up with from Henry.
The show opens with all six wives introducing themselves and the competition . Each of the six queens goes on to perform a song about their time with King Henry.
Catherine of Aragon kicks things off singing about how Henry wanted to annul their marriage in order to marry Anne Boleyn.
Anne quickly gives her side of things before sharing the story of her bloody death.
Next up, Jane Seymour performs an emotional ballad in which she sings about giving Henry his much-wanted son but never saw him grow up having died two weeks after childbirth.
The Queens come together for the next song which introduces Henrys next wife, Anna of Cleves, chosen by Henry based on her painting by German artist Hans Holbein.
Anna of Cleves then shares what happened next , telling how Henry rejected her after being unhappy with how she looked in real life versus the painting. Rather than being upset, Anna celebrates her newly single life with her riches.
Closing the show, the Queens rewrite their stories, singing a fictional account of how their lives panned out before ending with an encore medley performance.

Eastern Traditions And Other Forms
There are various Eastern traditions of theatre that include music, such as Chinese opera, Taiwanese opera, Japanese Noh and Indian musical theatre, including Sanskrit drama, Indian classical dance, Parsi theatre and Yakshagana. India has, since the 20th century, produced numerous musical films, referred to as “Bollywood” musicals, and in Japan a series of 2.5D musicals based on popular anime and manga comics has developed in recent decades.
Shorter or simplified “junior” versions of many musicals are available for schools and youth groups, and very short works created or adapted for performance by children are sometimes called minimusicals.
The antecedents of musical theatre in Europe can be traced back to the theatre of ancient Greece, where music and dance were included in stage comedies and tragedies during the 5th century BCE. The music from the ancient forms is lost, however, and they had little influence on later development of musical theatre. In the 12th and 13th centuries, religious dramas taught the liturgy. Groups of actors would use outdoor Pageant wagons to tell each part of the story. Poetic forms sometimes alternated with the prose dialogues, and liturgical chants gave way to new melodies.

Review: Six The Musical Arts Theatre
Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss are a songwriting team made in heaven, and in this show they make one of the strongest debuts in musical theatre that we have seen in a very long time indeed. They have a knack for turning out powerful, catchy, attractive pop songs that also have a strongly dramatic impetus behind them. Their chosen format here is the concept musical, and it is a wise choice to showcase their particular skills: the six wives of Henry VIII are in concert, giving us their herstory: the truth behind the well-known facade of agreed facts that comprise their place in posterity. With a cast of just six women playing the eponymous spouses, over the 80-minute running time, we get a sequence of revelations about their hidden selves, dressed in the form of a rock gig or variety spectacular. Its already played hugely successfully at Cambridge, and then on the Edinburgh Fringe. Now, their show makes its way into the Off-West End of this centrally located, intimate theatre, playing a few Monday night dates, squeezed onto the set of the resident presentation.
