Apple Dont Blink

Typography is getting more and more attention because the digital world has a huge demand for it. In order to understand the typography world better, we need to understand some basics first. The job of a font is not only to facilitate legibility. It is also about personality, feelings, engagement and many psychological factors.

The Spotify font is a great example of how a brand can take advantage of its typography. Spotify is a company launched in 2006 in Sweden. Its main focus is audio streaming that offers music and podcasts for its listeners. It has some basic features that anybody can use together with a paid subscription.

Sometimes Its Not Only The Size That Counts

Some of us may very well have body fonts that range between 20px – 24px and headers that are 30px – 70px, but that doesnt always mean your website’s typography is without issue.

Line height, font styles, kerning, and weights also each play an important part in conjunction with your font sizes to assure they work cohesively to assure the best user experience for users.

If youre looking for more details check out this article on the theory behind web typography, the basics, and rules to know when reviewing what font styles you want to choose.

What Font Does Spotify Use For Playlists

For playlists, Spotify uses their custom Circular font in a variety of weights. Circular Black is used for the playlist header. A mix of Circular Book and Light is used for the information and list text.

It is important to mention, depending on what platform you use Spotify on, what font is displayed may vary. For example, your browser cannot load the woff fonts, Spotify has fallback fonts specified in code. If their Circular font cant load, it will then try to load Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, or Arial, depending on what is available.

Apple Refreshes Design Resources For Ios 15 With New Templates Fonts And Website

Apple has redesigned the human interface guidelines page on their developer website, making it easier to find the right templates and fonts you want to work with. In addition to the new site, Apple has also added all-new templates and libraries for iOS 15 and iPadOS 15.

The new templates include refreshed colors, an iOS 15-specific Home Screen, new widgets, and many other user interface elements introduced in this years release. There are also new templates for Apple services like Siri and Apple Pay. Designers working on apps that use Touch ID and Face ID will be happy to see new components for those as well.

Apple has changed the font used in the templates, switching from the classic SF Pro Text and SF Pro Display to a new more modern variable version of the font. Apples fonts are available to download on the new design resources page independently of the templates.

The redesigned design resources website has a much improved layout. At the top of the page you can quickly jump to different sections. There are quick links to iOS & iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, technologies, fonts, SF Symbols, and marketing imagery. The new page is much more organized and will surely be easier to understand for the average user.

Is The New Apple Music With Big Fonts Good From A Usability Perspective

I have been testing the new Apple Music app for quite some time now. At first, I liked the design but I am slowly getting fed up with the big fonts. I like big fonts but Apple seems to have gone a bit far with the size. However, before I pass judgment on the design, I want to hear from the experts in the community to see if the big fonts are good from a design perspective.

  • 4They’re probably just trying to get you to buy a new iPhone with a bigger screen so the fonts look smaller again -) Andrew MartinMay 23 ’17 at 14:43

Let’s not overthink this.

Larger fonts do increase usability but larger fonts don’t always mean, “look at me!”

You notice the bottom navigation bar? The icons in it are pretty small and the text is readable only because of the superior pixel density of the screens today. The human eye always scans a page from top to bottom and hence it makes sense to keep the Hero of the page there. I emphasize on that word hero is because a larger text on top keeps my mind on it sub-consciously.

The human brain also tends to leave out or skip larger, yet constant visual items. The word Library will be seen once or twice and then it would be ignored by the brain. However, it would be induced in our minds

Well, it dominates the space and is eye catching, plus I think is “on trend” at this time, even though it means lower information density in that region.

Cursive Or Calligraphic Scripts

Over the last two years, two separate meme families have grown in popularity using various fancy fonts. The Galaxy Brain meme sometimes uses fancy fonts for the most big-brained ideas, and the Fancy Pooh meme requires cursive or calligraphic fonts for its sophisticated variants. Is the font you’re using extremely elegant? Would it require years of training to write by hand? Is it nearly illegible? The more effort required to read it, the better.

Try fonts like Dancing Script or Satisfy to get the fancy effect. Or, just add an Italic styling to Arial or Times New Roman.

Change The Itunes 12 Font Size To Be Larger Or Smaller

iTunes 12 brought about some fairly significant user interface changes to the media player app, one of which is the size of the font shown in playlist and music views. The new default iTunes font is smaller with tighter padding between list items, and accordingly it can be difficult to read for some users. But unlike most places in OS X, iTunes does offer an ability to change the size of onscreen fonts, which can help make that playlist and music text more readable.

Youll also find another benefit to increasing the text size used in iTunes is larger padding between the playlist items, further increasing the readability of text within iTunes 12. Making this adjustment combined with showing the sidebar in iTunes 12 can make the media player resemble the prior user experience a bit more if youre having a hard time adapting to the changes of the newest release.

  • From the iTunes app, go to the iTunes menu and choose Preferences
  • Select the General tab
  • Next to List Size choose Large to adjust the font size of playlist text
  • This is what the Larger font size looks like in the iTunes Playlist view, the text size itself is larger and the padding between list items is more significant:

Note the sidebar font size is not controlled through this setting, by instead through the broader OS X sidebar size setting found in the General System Preferences.

What Exactly Are Good Font Sizes

    The answer…it depends.

Everyone will have their own set of rules, equations, and techniques they use to come to their outline of font styles for their headers and paragraphs. Size 12 may look huge in some fonts and tiny in others.

One thing thats important to note is when youre choosing font sizes, you cant focus on desktop sizes alone. Responsive web design demands that you compile font sizes for a variety of screen sizes and devices to ensure the most optimal readability for them.

Below is the image from a blog article from Typecast that outlines font-sizes for H1s to H4s, paragraphs, and blockquotes.

Youll notice H5s and H6s were left out below, but thats because these tend to be header tags that arent used as much and tend to have smaller font sizes than the body and are used less often than normal .

You can also check out websites like Type-scale where you can plug in the font family you want to use alongside the type scale you want to use. This will help you set up a font size base that you can use to generate your font sizes for smaller devices.

There are some trends when it comes to font sizes. For example, the most popular paragraph font is 16px, because it roughly translates the standard 12pts used in printed material.

How To Add Apple Music To Your Memories In Ios 15

It’s safe to say that the choice of background music for Apple’s Memories feature has always been a bit corny. Memories, for those who are unaware, curates images in your Photos app to create montages. So it’s great that, with iOS 15, users will have the ability to select their own backing tracks.

Sadly, the new feature only works with Apple Music. Those who use third-party music services, like Spotify or Pandora, will have to sign up for a subscription to Apple’s very own music service. Then, you’ll be able to search for songs directly through the Photos app.

Here’s a breakdown of how to add Apple Music to your Memories in iOS 15, which officially launched on Sept. 20, 2021.

Dealing With Itunes Font Sizes File Types And Missing Files

Its time for another grab bag, selected from the many questions I get from readers. In this weeks column, I look at some questions about font size in iTunes , identifying music file types in iTunes, finding which tracks iTunes has lost track of , and moving podcasts to another Mac.

Q: Im having trouble seeing the type in iTunes. Is there a way to change the font and/or size in its display?

Ive long lamented the limited font and size options in Apples OS X and various applications as I, too, have vision that is far from 20/20.

iTunes does offer a limited option to change the size of its fonts. Open iTunes preferences, click the General icon, and then check Use large text for list views. This makes the text in both the sidebar and the main window larger. Unfortunately, you have no other options, and can only choose from those two sizes.

I doubt Apple wants people skinning iTunes, choosing their own fonts, because that could cause issues with the way certain things display. But it should at least allow for more size options for those of us who want to more easily read texts in the app.

Its not that iTunes doesnt display this information, but the default views in iTunes 11 dont show much metadata any more. You only see a tracks title and number, a rating , and its duration. You need to switch views to see the kind of information you want.

Spotify recently rolled out their some design changes with darker design and new font for their desktop application .

Can someone tell me what font are they using, and if there is a similar alternative on google?

An article released on “Fonts Similar To ‘Proxima Nova’” if Montserrat doesnt work.

Proxima nova is the font used and there have been some articles about it.

Released articles that I found when I searched for it on Monday and wanted to know too :

Just in case someone runs across this and wants to know more about Spotify history of fonts:

Just an FYI if you did a Google search you would have found all the information.

Like the other users have answered, Spotify uses Proxima Nova for the desktop and web applications.

One good tool for future reference, granted it that the font you need to find is on a HTML webpage, is the WhatFont extension for Chrome.

The easiest way to identify fonts on web pages.

What is the easiest way to find out the fonts used in a webpage? Firebug and Webkit Inspector are easy enough to use for developers. However, for others, this should not be necessary. With this extension, you could inspect web fonts by just hovering on them. It is that simple and elegant.

It also detects the services used for serving the web fonts. Supports Typekit and Google Font API.
