You need to establish who you are as a brand to make it easier for people to identify and distinguish you from other artists.
This may be hard for some, but a good way to understand who you are is to establish who you are not. You need to know this to market your music to the right audience. Often times, youll want to reach people who are like you, thats why I say you need to know yourself or have self-awareness. Establishing your brand and identity helps potential fans decide if your music resonates with them. Remember that your music is not for everyone.
Is your brand a static entity? No. I believe your brand or artist identity can evolve and change, just as we normally do as individuals. But its important, especially early in your career, to start with something that is authentically you to build around and commit to it.
Think about your story, angle, hook or nugget that helps you stand out and makes you different. It should be an authentic part of yourself that makes it easy for people to associate and connect with you.
The tricky part is to try and sum up what youre all about in a short line or sentence. Identifying yourself as a female rapper or guitarist from New York is too vague. What can people expect to hear from you? What kind of scenes, subculture, hobbies, lifestyles or interests are you into aside from music?
Build Leverage Through Value To Get What You Need
Sometimes it can take that one popular tastemaker, blogger, playlister or influencer to get you the publicity and exposure you need to get your career going. These are basically people who have a large audience of followers and can get your name out there to accelerate the growth of your fan base. Assuming, of course, that you have really good music that is worthy of attention.
For most artists, a random request to these individuals asking for promotion will often get ignored. So how do you get their attention? Think about whats in it for them. How does talking about you or promoting your music benefit them?
Unless you know them or have connections, industry people are less likely to do you any favors just out the goodness of their hearts. No matter how good you think you are, dont ever feel like you are entitled, especially if you havent proven yourself yet.
Its important to understand what value you possess as an artist and how you can leverage it to get others to talk about you and promote your music. If youre just starting, you wont have leverage so you will need to provide value first.
In todays music industry, value usually starts with offering your music for free to build a following.
The value you possess could be that you have really good music that makes influencers look good in front of their audience for discovering you.

- Listen to music. Enjoy the sound and lyrics.
- Move to music. It can be as simple as tapping your toes together or as complicated as a coordinated dance.
- Discuss lyrics. Read or listen to the lyrics of a song and talk about their meaning.
- Play an instrument. Use an instrument like a piano, guitar, drums, etc. to share music.

A 2008 study conducted by researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland found that stroke patients who listened to music for around 2 hours daily had better verbal memory and attention and a more positive mood than those who listened to an audio book or nothing at all.
What is more, studies have shown that music may aid speech recovery following stroke. One study conducted in 2013 by researchers from Korea, for example, found that stroke patients who developed communication problems after stroke demonstrated .

As a young man I enjoyed listening to a particular series of French instructional programs. I didnt understand a word, but was nevertheless enthralled. Was it because the sounds of human speech are thrilling? Not really. Speech sounds alone, stripped of their meaning, dont inspire. We dont wake up to alarm clocks blaring German speech. We dont drive to work listening to native spoken Eskimo, and then switch it to the Bushmen Click station during the commercials. But music does emanate from our alarm clocks in the morning, and fill our cars, and give us chills, and make us cry. According to a recent paper by Nidhya Logeswaran and Joydeep Bhattacharya from the University of London, music even affects how we see visual images. In the experiment, 30 subjects were presented with a series of happy or sad musical excerpts. After listening to the snippets, the subjects were shown a photograph of a face. Some people were shown a happy face the person was smiling – while others were exposed to a sad or neutral facial expression. The participants were then asked to rate the emotional content of the face on a 7-point scale, where 1 mean extremely sad and 7 extremely happy.

Youve probably seen this in music and you might have wondered exactly what a dot does to a note. To preface, we are not talking about staccato notes but dots next to notes that look like this:
The short answer is that these dots change the length of a note.

Music literally changes the brain. Neurological researchers have found that listening to music triggers the release of several neurochemicals that play a role in brain function and mental health:

But these automatic brain mechanisms are only the beginning of how we read meaning into music.
