What Do Artists Use To Make Music

    Give Up Feeling Selfish

How to Use Apple Music for Artists

Everyone contributes to the world in their own way.

We need doctors and lawyers and teachers, but we also need artists and craftsman and creatives that make our world interesting, vibrant and enjoyable.

Your challenge is to find out what you are at your core and then do it.

Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. Its a gift to the world and every being in it. Dont cheat us of your contribution. Give us what youve got, writes Steven Pressfield in his new book The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks & Win Your Inner Creative Battles.

    Artists often feel guilty for not having a real job and that they should be contributing more to the family income. They then either feel guilty when they are in the studio away from their family or away from the studio and not working.;

But, guilt is counterproductive emotion. If you find yourself feeling this way, remind yourself that your work is important and needed – it is what makes you whole and able to contribute more fully to your family when you are there.

Know The Basics Of Music Copyright Laws

;One aspect that can get easily overlooked is protecting your music. To avoid this, you want to make sure you properly copyright your work.

Im not a lawyer, so I cant offer much more advice, but do your research. Technically, your music is copyrighted when it is created and made into a tangible form . However, registering your music with the copyright office can offer further protection and help provide evidence that you are, in fact, the originator of that work.

Copyrighting your music prevents you from becoming a victim of copyright infringement . I was told by someone who used to be an A&R for a major label that they would scout for songs from lesser-known talent and check to see if the songs were copyrighted. If they were not registered, they could essentially steal it. This was a long time ago so I imagine it would be much more difficult to actually take someones song as their own in the digital age. But, the main point is to take precautions and know your basic rights as a creative.

Not sure how to register your music?

For producers, if you make beats and use samples to create a derivative work, be sure to know what you can or cant do to avoid potential legal action.

    If youre in a band or group, you will need to figure out how you want to split ownership over the musical compositions you create together.;

Some Automation Tweaks Cause Strange Pitch Shifts For No Apparent Reason

There is nothing worse than spending hours or days on a track and then discovering that something has gone audibly wrong, with no apparent cause.

All of a sudden, the pitch of one of your instruments has completely changed.

You search for hours, not realizing what has gone wrong. For Ableton users, this is an all-too-relatable nightmare.

So what has gone wrong? Well, there seems to be a glitch in Ableton Live that changes the pitch within midi clips that have been automated.

Although it can be a painstaking task to solve this potentially song-destroying problem, the glitch is well known.

The simplest way to fix the issue is to insert a node at the start of the automation and then delete it. I have no idea why this works, but it does.

There, I just saved you hours of disappointment.

    How To Approach Music Production

Before purchasing any gear, let’s talk about how to approach production.

Imagine you’re at an outdoor restaurant. and not too far away is a rock band performing one of their songs. You’re not close enough to hear the concise live sound, but you can make out most of the lyrics, the guitar melodies, and the drum beats.;Now, imagine you go into the studio with that band and have to produce the song. Everything is up close, clear, precise, and needs to be properly put together. You know how the song goes already, but now you’re faced with the task of producing it.

So, where might you begin? Let’s start with the vocal. You have a dry recording of the main vocal, so depending on the mood of the song, you might put some reverb, delay, and compression on the track in order to round it out a bit and give it some atmospheric room to breathe.

Then there’s the guitar. How loud do you want it to be? How aggressive or soft do you want it to strike? You’re not writing the song, you’re producing it. Maybe you really like the drummer’s performance live, but feel like a drum machine will be better suited for the recorded version, so you might take some drum samples or MIDI drum kits and start putting together a beat.

Similarly, the bass player might have killer stage presence, but you might opt to use a synth bass for its different textures and electronic capabilities. Production is your way of deciding how the music sounds.

Now, let’s get into some gear.

;Theres a difference between making music as a hobby and making music as a profession. Just like in business, presentation is important. Part of treating your music career like a business involves presenting yourself as an artist to take seriously. If you come off as amateurish, people can subconsciously associate you with lower quality and someone not worthy of attention. This is why having good quality visual components is key to a strong online presence.

What Milestones/tiers Of Earnings Do They Payout At

    There are no milestones or tiers that Spotify pays out at, instead, your distributed is updated with a report of your streams every 6-10 days. The number of days varies in an irregular way, but it never exceeds ten. So just about once a week you receive through your distributor a record of how many streams/purchases your tracks received, where the interactions came from by country, and how much they racked up. It also updates your royalty total, which can be withdrawn via your preferred method.;

Convert Audio To Midi In Ableton

Ableton Standard and Ableton Suite editions have the awesome feature of converting audio samples to midi with two clicks of the mouse button.

This allows you to take any sample, be it a melody or a drumbeat , and turn it into MIDI.

You can then see the approximate notes, chords, or beats of the original sample, mapped out on the piano roll.

Not only can this help to learn the chord progressions of your favorite songs, but it can also help to inspire your own melodies and beats!

Simply take the notes and mess about with them on the piano roll. voilà! A brand new song.

If this feature existed years ago, we wouldnt have many great song ideas lost to oblivion.

In the past, making studio-quality music required lots of money and years of training in composition and instrumentation. Now, however, you can create beautiful songs at home with nothing more than a computer, some audio software, and a little bit of practice.

What Is A Digital Audio Workstation

A digital audio workstation is essentially a blank piece of paper and the necessary paint brushes for an artist to create their works of art on. All you need to bring is some sounds, your talent, and most of all, your creativity. A DAW is a computer program designed for editing, recording, mixing and mastering audio files. You can record your various instruments, MIDI controllers and vocals, lay down the tracks, rearrange, splice, cut, paste, add effects, and ultimately finalize the song youve got cooking for the world to hear.

Professional, semi-pro and home studios use DAWs as their backbone for making music if their main focus is to have a digital setup. Aside from those who use real instruments, we do know of some well-known musicians who still use analog setups, such as drum machines and synthesizers;with real mixing boards and the like, but a majority of people nowadays are strictly computer-based or at least have a hybrid studio to incorporate both . This trend only continues to grow as technology advances. Aside from a computer or laptop for music of course, a DAW is the most important piece of production gear youll need to get the ball rolling for those masterpieces waiting to be created.

Give Up Taking Uninformed Advice To Heart

    • When are you going to get a real job?
    • When are you going to grow up?
    • At what point does an artist realize they are not talented enough to make it
    • Must be nice not to have to work.
    • Must be nice to only work when you feel like it.

Artist and creator of The Savvy Painter, Antrese Wood, points to these toxic relationships as holding artists back from reaching their potential.

But guess what? We can choose who to listen to and what advice to take. You may have heard the adage that we are the sum of the five people we spend the most time with.

Spend it with those that push you to succeed, those that have succeeded as an artist and those that inspire you to do so.

Not all advice is created equal.

Give Up Working All The Time

Sure, you have to show up to the studio even when you dont want to do the work. But, you also have to know when to leave and when to take the time to take care of your body, your health, and your emotional and social well-being.

You cant make your best work if you arent investing in your body and mind as well.

We have seen artists sacrifice both of these in the name of their craft. But, you need your body on the most basic of levels to create your work. Successful artists know that their success is a marathon and not a sprint, so you need to maintain your health to stay in the game.

Make time in your schedule to stretch, exercise, go for walks, cook healthy meals and have conversations with your peers, family, and friends.

    Collaborating With Other Music Creators

When working with another producer, be sure to have open communication about whats the goal of the project before hitting the studio.

Nowadays many producers collaborate through the internet using tools such as Splice. Splice is a platform that allows producers to share project files automatically and without much effort; All you have to do is download Splice for Desktop for free and get going.

If youre working with a singer or musician, its great to establish some guidelines for the performer to make sure he or she is totally comfortable. Take some time to review things such as lyrics and melodies.

The Piano Roll Is Super Fiddly

I mean, look at this thing. One of the most common complaints about Ableton Live is that its piano roll is too small, congested, and too fiddly. It is easy to mistakenly add a note or move a note when using it.

However, the counterpoint to that complaint is that the piano roll allows you to be super precise.

If being super precise is not what youre going for, or if youre happy with rigid beats that are on the beat rather than being behind or in front of the beat , you may have an easier workflow using a sequencer, the like the one found in FL Studio.

    Mixing Your Electronic Music

How Much MONEY Do Artists Make From SPOTIFY Streams???

As with any recorded music, mixing is best tackled after the production stage.

The closer you can get to the sound you want in the composition and sound design stage, the easier the mixing stage will be.

The techniques for mixing electronic music are identical to that of acoustic music. But bear in mind a couple of caveats:

  • If youre using samples, theyre often already heavily processed. This is especially true of drum samples. So you dont need to compress an electronic kick drum in the same way you might a real one.
  • Soft-synth and sampler patches often have effects already applied within the plugin. This means it sounds great when being previewed but not necessarily so great in a mix. I usually turn off the internal effects and use my global auxiliary effects. Especially when it comes to reverb.
  • As mentioned in step 5, try using saturators and exciters add harmonics to the sound. It fattens them up and makes them richer, exactly as you would with guitar or vocal recordings.
