Top 20 Songs: May 2022 (05/07/2022) I Best Billboard Music Chart Hits

Harry Styles As It Was swoops in to become the biggest single of 2022 so far in the UK.

The lead track from Harrys third solo album Harrys House logged a total of 10 weeks atop the Official Singles Chart, making it the longest-running Number 1 of the year so far. As It Was overtakes We Dont Talk About Bruno from Disneys Encanto which lead the way at the end of the first quarter.

The 80s-influenced track streaks ahead of the competition with over 855,000 combined chart units for the year-to-date so far, driven by a huge 95 million streams. As It Was is also the most physically purchased and digitally downloaded song of the year so far in the UK.

Coming in hot in second place is a surprise link-up between two superstars Afrobeats legend Fireboy DML and Ed Sheeran, whose Peru may have peaked at Number 2 on the Official Singles Chart, but storms ahead of the track that denied it of its Number 1, We Dont Talk About Bruno, propelled by a cool 98 million streams.

And speaking of We Dont Talk About Bruno, the Encanto mega-hit may place at Number 3, but its by far the most-streamed track of the year to date in the UK. Bruno logs a mammoth 110 million streams overall, massively bolstered by 36 million video streams, the most for any song so far in 2022.

Sam Ryder’s Space Man Becomes The Highest

On 20 May 2022 , Sam Ryder climbed to number two in the UK Singles Chart with “Space Man“, the United Kingdom‘s entry from the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. The song’s chart success was attributed to its second place finish at that year’s competition. “Space Man” became the highest-charting UK Eurovision entry since Gina G‘s “Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit“, which reached number-one in 1996. Ryder also outperformed the last UK Eurovision winners to date, Katrina & The Waves, whose winning entry from 1997, “Love Shine a Light“, peaked at number three.

Digital Downloads Online Streaming And Bundles

Since February 12, 2005, the Billboard Hot 100 tracks paid digital downloads from such internet services as iTunes, Musicmatch, and Rhapsody. Billboard initially started tracking downloads in 2003 with the Hot Digital Tracks chart. However, these downloads did not count towards the Hot 100 and that chart counted each version of a song separately . This was the first major overhaul of the Hot 100’s chart formula since December 1998.

The change in methodology has shaken up the chart considerably, with some songs debuting on the chart strictly with robust online sales and others making drastic leaps. In recent years, several songs have been able to achieve 80-to-90 position jumps in a single week as their digital components were made available at online music stores. Since 2006, the all-time record for the biggest single-week upward movement was broken nine times.

In July 2020, Billboard announced that they would no longer allow sales of physical/digital bundles to be reported as digital sales. This refers to songs being bought along with merchandise, either from an artists website or through another vendor. The magazine stated that this was a tactic generally used by certain artists to boost their chart positions. Instead, such physical releases are now only counted when they are shipped to the consumer, rendering the tactic “ineffectual”.

A record chart, also known as a music chart, is a method of ranking music judging by the popularity during a given period of time. Although primarily a marketing or supermarketing tool like any other sales statistic, they have become a form of popular media culture in their own right.

Record charts are compiled using a variety of criteria. These commonly include sales of records, cassettes and compact discs amount of radio airplay requests to radio disk jockeys voting for songs by the radio listeners and, more recently, number of and streams.

Some charts are specific to a particular musical genre and most to a particular geographical location. The most common period of time covered by a chart is one week, with the chart being printed or broadcast at the end of this time. Summary charts for years and decades are then calculated from their component weekly charts. Component charts have become an increasingly important way to measure the commercial success of individual songs.

Reviewers often describe records using round number milestones within a chart. For example, a record that peaks at number 7 may be called a “Top 10” hit, even when there is no chart limited to only the top 10 records in that particular location.
