Apple Music Vs Spotify: Availability
Both services have worked on widening their availability in recent years. In addition to the expected devices like phones, tablets, PCs and Macs, Spotify content can be played via your games consoles. That goes for the most recent PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, as well as older consoles like the Xbox One series and the PS4. Early in 2021 Spotify also launched the Car Thing, a small touchscreen device you can install in any car to play music and podcasts from.
Apple Music has its own automative solution in Apple CarPlay, though this needs to be built-in to the car itself you cant just add CarPlay to any old clunker. Still, Apple Music also claims an impressive breadth of supportive devices, from the Apple HomePod and HomePod mini to the Apple TV 4K and Apple Watch.
Spotify also works on smartwatches ranging from Fitbit and Garmin models to more fashion-minded Samsung and Google Wear OS wearables. Its getting better in this regard too, as Spotify is getting offline listening on Wear OS devices as well as the Apple Watch.
Either way youre spoiled for choice, through thanks to its bonus games console support, Spotify edges this one. You could perhaps also call it a negative that Apple Music lossless won’t work with a lot of headphones and speakers, though that will eventually be true of Spotify HiFi as well.
Apple Music And Spotify Are Now Tied For Search Functionality
- Spotify now allows you to search for songs by lyrics.
- With Apple Music, you can search for songs using lyrics.
In terms of search functionality, Apple Music outshone Spotify for quite some time because it had a Search by Lyrics feature and Spotify didnt. How many times have you wanted to listen to a song only to remember the lyrics and not title? However, now Spotify has implemented this feature as well, so regardless of which service youre using, you can forgo Googling and type your lyrics directly into the apps search bar. Youll then be presented with the song with a small excerpt showing the lyric you searchedtalk about convenience.
What About The Actual Audio Quality
If you’re not an audiophile, this one is easy to answer: It doesn’t really matter.
Apple Music and Spotify stream using different audio formats, and Spotify has nice quality controls within the app. That said, the difference is going to be negligible to most people. CNET performed a nifty test comparing the two and found that it shouldn’t be a deciding factor between the two services.
If you are an audiophile, just subscribe to Tidal, I guess.

Apple Music Has More Tracks Spotify Has Podcasts
Spotify says it has a catalog of over 70 million songs while Apple Music is over 75 million. Both offer early access to certain albums from time to time and Apple Music sometimes offers exclusives for certain music videos.
If you turn on iCloud Music Library within Apple Music, you can access your personal library of tunes across all your devices . This feature “matches” songs in your library with those in the iTunes catalog, or uploads them if the song isn’t available, so you can listen to your music wherever you’re signed in with your Apple ID. You can store up to 100,000 songs.
Note that iTunes Match is also available even without an Apple Music subscription for $25 a year.
Spotify also lets you play music from your device in the Spotify app, but it only works for local files . Spotify is the only service that offers podcasts within the app. Apple splits podcasts into a dedicated Podcasts app.
Winner: Apple Music for integrating your own library, but Spotify has the podcast advantage
What Is Apple Music
Apple Music was designed to be a replacement for the problem-riddled iTunes app. After the acquisition of Beats in 2014, the team behind the said company spearheaded the development of the new app. Apple Music was eventually launched in 2015. Its available in 168 countries as of the time of writing and has about 72 million.

How Does It Work
Apple Music is much easier to use now than it was when it first launched in 2015. If you are using an iOS or Mac device, you already have it installed. And its probably set as your default music app. If youre on Android you can from the Play Store, but on Windows youll have to stick to the old iTunes experience.
Once you have it installed, open it up and youll be greeted by four main sections: Library, For You, Browse, and Radio. Each one has tiles filled with content to listen to right away. On iOS, theres an extra search icon at the bottom right, whereas on Android its located in the upper part of the screen.
Library is fairly self-explanatory, and it contains your personal music library as well as artists and songs youve saved on the platform. This is also where youll find your saved and custom playlists.
The For You section is where youll go to discover new music. Apple Music analyzes what youve been listening to and liked/disliked, then recommends similar music using complex algorithms. Browse is another way to find new music, but it relies on Top 100 lists, new releases, and featured playlists rather than your listening history.
Apple Music Vs Spotify: Which Is The Best Music App
Apple Music or Spotify? The question of which is the best music streaming app used to be easier to answer: Apples cloud locker feature and deep Apple device integration was appealing, but Spotifys bigger library and extensive social media integration made it a deserved category leader.
Now, though, its not so clear. Apple has made big strides in improving its library and feature set, including the addition of both spatial audio and lossless audio in June 2021. The rival Spotify HiFi was announced well before this, but has yet to actually materialize. This Apple Music vs. Spotify face-off will compare both services as they currently stand, to find out if Spotify remains king or if Apple Music deserves your subscription instead.

Reasons To Switch From Spotify To Apple Music
Spotify has one substantial advantage over Apple Music: It offers a free tier of service that lets you stream any music, albeit with commercial interruption.
That aside, Apple has some compelling advantages. Apple Music offers a high-quality lossless audio option, for example, which is better for audiophiles than what Spotify includes. If you have an Apple smart speaker like the HomePod mini, Apple Music is the logical streaming service, because it’s fully integrated into Siri’s voice commands Spotify is not.
And it’s also an integral part of the Apple ecosystem if you subscribe to Apple One, you get Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, and Apple Music included for a single price. If you have that, you probably don’t need to continue to pay for or use Spotify as well.
Apple Music Vs Spotify: Content And Recommendations
Both Apple Music and Spotify offer a large collection of songs, albums, and playlists.
When it comes to music content libraries, theres no beating Apple Music. With over 60 million songs, youll be sure to find music from the artists you love, and from artists you have yet to discover. Moreover, Apple Music is well-known for making exclusive deals with artists like Drake and Taylor Swift for early content releases. This is exclusive content is due in large part to Apples paid-only service users are required to have a paid subscription after the three-month free trial. On top of the exclusive content, users have access to many on-demand radio shows, including Beats1.
While Apple Music may have more content, Spotifys music catalog is still extensive with over 50 million songs, with around 40,000 being added every day. Unlike Apple Music, Spotify also offers podcasts, with over 700,000 currently on the platform. Over the years, Spotify has been diversifying its content library to become the ultimate audio streaming application, which is why the company has gone to great lengths to secure big-name podcasters like Joe Rogan.

This Is More Of A Critique Of Google Home But Every Time Someone Asks The Device To Play Something It Ends Up In My Spotify Library
I recently had a party at my house, and it wreaked havoc on my Spotify account.
Any time someone requested that the Google Home play a song, artist, or album, it saved it to my Spotify library. Days later, my library was full of music I’d never heard of or wasn’t interested in hearing ever again.
This isn’t necessarily a failing of Spotify, but it certainly isn’t a great feature. While I was able to figure out how to remove all that music from my library, I haven’t figured out how to prevent it in the future.
And since allowing other people to use my Google Home to request music, I’ve noticed that the random music requested by my party guests is now being used to fuel Spotify’s omnipresent recommendation engine. A much-lauded feature of Spotify is those tailor-made playlists, but even algorithms have their shortcomings.
A prime example: My boyfriend is a big Brockhampton fan, and he uses the Google Home just as much as I do. Now, Brockhampton has not only ended up in my library, but it’s started creeping into my custom playlists.
Apple Music Vs Spotify: Sharing Is Caring
Both platforms make it easy to share music with your friends and family. With either app, you can share songs on your Instagram story, or even send a direct link on your social media platform of choice. While this is certainly useful, Spotify has a couple of tricks up its sleeve that give it a leg up over Apple Music.
Spotify Codes function like QR codes, allowing you to easily share songs and playlists with others.
For starters, Spotify gives you the option to create Collaborative Playlists, allowing you and your friends to make the perfect playlist for a Friday night in, or a Saturday night out. You also have the ability to quickly share songs and playlists through Spotify Codes, which can be generated and scanned within the app itself. Apple Music doesnt yet support collaborative playlists, but does support playlist-sharing.

Amount Of Music Content
When it comes to music content, both platforms are quite evenly matched with collections amounting to over 70 million audio tracks.
Spotify has about 4 billion playlists and is constantly expanding its music offerings by adding thousands of new tracks every day. In February 2021, this rate increased to 60,000 new tracks added each day.
Users can expect to find all the newest mainstream hits on the platform thanks to a partnership between Spotify and Billboard. The music publication curates 124 playlists on Spotify, including popular charts like Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200, Billboard Weekly.
Theres also a Charts section where users can check out what songs or artists are trending worldwide at any given time. Here youll find Weekly Song Charts, Daily Song Charts, and Daily Viral Charts from as many as 70 different territories.
All your standard music genres, such as Pop, Hip-Hop, Rock, Chill, etc., are covered on Spotify. But the app does also offer more unique genres, such as Karaoke, Cooking & Dining, Anime, and Songwriters.
Spotify has an extensive Indie section as well. This is evidenced not only by a vast collection of playlists but also by the genres increased market share and revenue on the platform in 2020. This section features over 40 playlists curated by Spotify, but using the Search function will pull up even more.

Spotify Music is one of the most popular streaming services around.
As of November 2021, only Apple Music will provide you with an audiophile-grade streaming experience. Spotify announced its Spotify HiFi tier in February 2021 and said it would be releasing later this year. However, as the end of 2021 comes closer and closer, there is still no Spotify HiFi and all we know about it is that it will offer CD-quality audio and will only be available to select regions upon its release. Apple Music recently released its high-resolution streaming options at no extra cost. You can now stream 16-bit/44.1kHz, 24-bit/48kHz, and 24-bit/192kHz streaming and Spatial Audio through Dolby Atmos content through Apple Music.
Apple Music also streams content at 256kbps utilizing the AAC audio format and streams via one high-quality Bluetooth codec: AAC, which is far more efficient than most other open-source lossy alternatives. By default, Apple Music will stream at the highest quality possible and will reduce quality when streaming using cellular data. However, this quality throttle can be disabled in the settings.

Apple Music Is The World’s Second Most Popular Music Streaming Service Behind Spotify
Apple Music is the second most popular music streaming service globally, but remains far behind Spotify in its continuing quest for streaming dominance, according to new market research.
According to a new report by Midia Research, Apple Music subscribers made up 15% of all streaming service listeners in the global market in the second quarter of 2021, placing it in a distant second place behind Spotify.
Spotify remained the dominant service, commanding more than double that amount with 31% of the worldwide market share, although this represents a small drop from 33% in 2020. Amazon Music and Tencent Music both took a 13% market share, with YouTube Music making up 8% of subscriptions globally.
Spotify remains the DSP with the highest market share , but this was down from 33% in Q2 2020 and 34% in Q2 2019. With Apple Music being a distant second with 15% market share, and Spotify adding more subscribers in the 12 months leading up to Q2 2021 than any other single DSP, there is no risk of Spotify losing its leading position anytime soon but the erosion of its share is steady and persistent.
According to the report, Amazon Music again outperformed Spotify in terms of growth , however YouTube Music was the standout performer for the second successive year, growing by more than 50% in the 12 months leading up to the second quarter of 2021.
Music Discovery Tools Excel On Spotify And Apple Music
One of the top reasons to use a streaming service is to discover new music. Both Spotify and Apple Music expose you to new tunes based on what you already like.
Spotify has tailored playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar that are automatically populated each week with new songs. Apple Music has similar playlists, including New Music Mix.
When you first sign up for each service, both ask you for your favorite genres and artists to get a baseline reading. Once you start listening more, each gets a clearer picture of your likes and dislikes to help tailor recommendations even further.
Spotify and Apple Music also have radio stations based around your favorite artists, tracks or genres. Apple Music also has a separate station called Beats1 Radio which is curated and hosted by actual DJs, so you can listen to it in real time like you would a traditional radio station.
In our experience, Spotify’s algorithmic recommendations for new music based on our listening habits is the most on-point. But Apple Music’s human-curated radio station often uncovers new or unreleased tracks that also appeal.
Winner: Spotify for playlists, Apple Music for radio lovers
