London Bridge Is Falling Dawn is a traditional childrens song that originated in England most likely in the Middle Ages. The first printed versions of the song date from the 18th century and it was not until the following century that it became world famous.
Today, London Bridge Is Falling Dawn is popular in all countries and is very popular with young children who want to start playing the piano.
Its popularity and the ease with which it can be played on the piano have led us to include it in this ranking and to make it a piano tutorial.
Clapping And Tapping Rhythms
Most beginner pianists have a habit of jumping straight into playing the music on the page. While the notes are important, rhythms are equally important.
As you look at a new passage of music, begin by clapping or tapping the rhythms on the page. For a beginner, I recommend clapping the rhythm of each hand separately. This helps ensure that you have a firm grip on what rhythms each hand is responsible for.
As you clap the rhythm make sure to count out loud. Counting out loud is an important part of playing any piece, and it helps solidify that youre in the correct time meter. Using your voice to count also helps with establishing a steady rhythm.
Putting the hands together while playing can be a challenge. This is also the same when it comes to the proper execution of the rhythms. To helps with this I ask many of my piano students to tap the rhythm in their lap or on a flat surface.
When tapping the rhythm its important to count and make sure the hands enter at the correct time. If a pianist can tap and clap the rhythm correctly, it increases their chances of playing the notes correctly in time once they are added in the next step.

What Are The Finger Numbers For Piano Players
When learning how to read sheet music, its important to remember that each of your fingers have numbers 1 5. Thumb is number 1, the pointer finger is number 2, middle finger is number 3, ring finger is number 4, and pinky is number 5. All piano players from beginner to advanced use finger numbers for reading sheet music.
Pro Tip: Now, as you read through new songs, write in the note names. Then, sing the note name or finger numbers while playing, which will help you memorize the names of numbers of the notes on a piano. Once youve practiced this, erase the letter names and test yourself to see if you still remember the playing pattern and tune of the song.

Practice On Both Clefs
Learning piano requires being able to read both the treble and bass clef fluently. While its easy enough to learn one or the other, it can be a bit brain-splitting to do them both at the same time.
Weve already talked about FACE and Every Good Boy Does Fine. You should be pretty comfortable with the treble clef, at this point.
The bass clef simply shifts everything down two steps. The mnemonic All Cars Eat Gas will help you remember the spaces of the bass clef. Good Boys Do Fine Always will help you remember the lines.
Now that youre aware of the note names, start off by practicing each clef independently. Develop a routine for memorizing and sight-reading treble clef note names with your right hand.
Then do the same thing with the left hand for the bass clef.
As we mentioned above, the notes that fall below the Middle C make up the Bass clef. To remain consistent with this learning to read music guide, lets also start from the bottom.
Thoughts On Learning Via Letters Or Simulators
The way I see it, reading sheet music is initially much more difficult than reading letters or other simulators. As songs get more challenging, though, especially toward an advanced level, it actually becomes easier to read the notes it just becomes so much more straight-forward, assuming youve been building a good foundation of note reading from the beginning. If you havent been reading music from a beginner level, reading advanced pieces will be impossible, and reading from simulators or letters will take much longer than if you were fluent in note reading.

Music I Give My Beginners In The First Year Of Note Reading
Primarily, this music on this page is made up of Middle C songs with “shared-between-the-hands” melodies. Many will be familiar to your students. These are the same songs that are found in my book Songs Old & Songs New.
Additionally, there are some pieces that make use of left hand chords or very simple accompaniments.
Most of the Middle C melodies have chord suggestions or illustrative graphics for an enterprising accompanist to devise his or her own backup. A few also have written-out secondo parts, for easy duet playing.

Practicing Piano Hands Separately Slowly
Sheet music should only be digested in small bits rather than all at once. A simple strategy is to start reading each hand separately at a slow tempo. Take your time going through each measure aiming to be as accurate as possible.
To properly sight read sheet music you should focus on eliminating any pauses or abrupt stops. While note accuracy is important, its very tough to develop a sense of rhythm with constant hiccups.
Because our ears are an important part of making music, its important to try to play everything correctly the first time you encounter a piece of music. To help with this I recommend phantom playing.
Phantom playing is a lot like tapping. You will play the music, except not on the keys. Instead, the music will be played in your lap or on the piano fallboard.
What this does is help establish correct finger placement, recognizing the distance between intervals, and also doubling down on the importance of rhythm. Unlike tapping rhythms, what phantom playing also does is develop a feel of transferring weight between individual fingers.
What Are Dynamic Marks
Dynamic marks are another important aspect of music reading skills. These are the musical terms and symbols that tell you the quality of each note or phrases of music. Dynamic marks can tell you to play very loud, very soft, or somewhere in between. They are usually written in Italian. We wont go into the details of dynamics marks, but you can find everything you need to know about them in the article below.

What Do The Letters Above The Piano Staff Represent
I am a beginner trying to understand the music notation for a song I want to try. Can someone kindly tell me what are the letters above the treble clef in the following figure:
I’ve read that they represent the triads but I am not sure how, for example there is an F written on top of the A note, etc. Any help would be really appreciated.

The letters above mean the implied/intended harmony. There are 2 possibilities I see here as to why an F and C7 are listed.
If you are playing solo
There are certain common chord progressions in music. The go-to example always seems to be I-V-I, and what this means is that the chords move from the first/tonic chord of the scale then back to The First.
You’ll notice that there’s no C present in the C7 either, but it does have other notes of the C7 chord. This is an example of an implied harmony, because the function of the chord is to be a dominant so it can lead back to the root in the next chord.
It’s much more common to think of a chord progression as V – I – V than it is to say V-iii-ii so what the transcriber has done is to write the V-I-V chords instead of the V-iii-ii chords. As you can see, C Am G has a different harmony and feel to C F C7, but C F C7 is the intended harmony underneath.

- Sheet music with a few note names. Where there is repetition of notes, the letter names are not included. This allows you to gradually learn to read music more fluently by working out the unlabelled notes from the notes that are labelled with note names.
- MP3 recording of the piece at full speed – the more you listen to a piece of music that you’re learning to play, the better you will pick it up.
