Hamilton Opens Off Broadway Then Broadway
Hamilton opens off Broadway at The Public Theater and later on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in the same year, winning 11 Tony awards. The show also set a record high for Tony nominations with 16. Hamilton is still enjoying its Broadway run and is considered to be one of the most successful musicals of all time.
Power And Success Of Latino Community To Be Celebrated At San Diego Lattitude Conference
Former President Barack Obama, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Sen. Alex Padilla scheduled to speak at 5th annual conference
When Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017, he brought the production of Hamilton to the island and he said they raised $15 million. Just last week, he visited Puerto Rico as it deals with Hurricane Fiona.
In many respects, drawing from his past and his roots in the Latino community has been a key to Mirandas success. His first Broadway musical, In the Heights, which was recently adapted to the silver screen, was all about his neighborhood Washington Heights and the small business owners trying to make it there.
A big part of his work is celebrating the community that raised him, its resilience and representing it while noting that the Latino community is vast and not a monolith.
Now that I have had a taste of your world of being a small business owner, its just reinforced how impossible it is without community, he said. And when Latinos come together because we are all from our own little parts of the world but we are also so powerful when we are together. Theres really kind of nothing we cant do.
The Success Of We Know The Way
Disney released its new feature film, Moana, in 2017. Moana is a Polynesian teenager who sets sail on a quest to find her ancestors and discovers a world full of adventure, music, and magic in this film. Youre Welcome and How Far Ill Go are two of the most popular songs among filmgoers, both of which were written by Miranda. Despite their popularity, these songs did not achieve the same level of success as We Dont Talk About Bruno, despite the fact that they were popular. Since then, Miranda has released a new album called Hamilton: An American Musical. The final scene of Moana, We Know the Way, is incorporated into this albums title track. The evil Maui was defeated by Moana and her friend, Jemaine Clement , in this scene. It is a fitting conclusion to this films storyline, and the song will be heard by many fans.

Love Make The World Go Round
A slightly different song for Miranda, but one designed for a television audience in mind, he, alongside a number of other famous musicians, created an incredibly catchy song that would work as a charity single and be performed on The Today Show.
Sung with Jennifer Lopez and written by a number of other talents, including Nelson Kyle, Melody Noel Hernandez, John Mitchell, Mike Molina, Jordan Johnson Marcus Lomax, and Stefan Johnson, the song is considered one of Miranda’s best outside of his Broadway and big screen productions.
How Far I’ll Go
Every Disney princess has her own “I want” song, a song that both sums up the character and demonstrates exactly what she needs in her story. These songs are a crucial part of the overall narrative arc and have to be both memorable and provide a useful amount of momentum for the rest of the film.
“How Far I’ll Go” is perhaps the most famous song from Disney’s Moana. A solo piece, sung by Auli’i Cravalho and covered by Alessia Cara, this song really is the starting point for the character to go on her big adventure and, therefore, is an extremely important piece of music.

The Story Behind Hamilton
Our story starts in 2009. Lin-Manuel Miranda had just read Ron Chernows biography of Alexander Hamilton and came up with an idea for a rap mixtape. He began writing and tinkering on songs, with no plans for a full-blown musical.
Shortly after this, Miranda received an invitation from President Barack Obama to perform a song from his first musical In The Heights at a White House poetry event. Lin did what any of us would do say yes, pack his bags, and head to Washington DC.
But when he showed up at the White House, Miranda did something radical. In front of the president and stars like James Earl Jones and Spike Lee, he went against the request to perform a song from In The Heights. Instead, he performed a brand new song called Alexander Hamilton from a mixtape he was working on.
The Power In The Process
You might read that story and think, Well, thats great for Lin-Manuel Miranda, but what does that have to do with me as an entrepreneur? Lets look at Mirandas process from a different perspective
Unlike many entrepreneurs who dont tell a soul about their ideas until launch, Lin tinkered on his idea in public. He used crowds at The White House and college campuses as his focus groups. He used their feedback to turn his song into a mixtape and ultimately a full-blown musical.
Thats the same cycle for creating successful businesses. I was curious to ask Tom John Or-Paz, founder of LightArt, since his work touches both art and business. So many of us fall into this trap of believing that creativity is a purely individual process that happens behind closed doors. In reality, the best creative ideas whether in business or the arts come from a collective effort, he said. They require that you share your ideas with others so you can use their feedback to create something even better.

Vice Presidentelect Pence Controversy
Following a performance on November 18, 2016, with Vice President-electMike Pence in the audience, Brandon Victor Dixon addressed Pence from the stage with a statement jointly written by the cast, show creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and producer Jeffrey Seller. Dixon began by quieting the audience, and stated:
Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical, we really do. We, sir, weare the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us. Again, we truly thank you truly for seeing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men and women of different colors, creeds and orientations.
Ticket Lottery And Ham4ham
Hamilton, like some other Broadway musicals, offers a ticket lottery before every show. Initially, 21 front-row seats were offered in each lottery. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda began preparing and hosting outdoor mini-performances shortly before each daily drawing, allowing lottery participants to experience a part of the show even when they did not win tickets. These were dubbed the “Ham4Ham” shows, because lottery winners were given the opportunity to purchase two tickets at the reduced price of one Hamilton each.
The online theatrical journal HowlRound characterized Ham4Ham as an expression of Miranda’s cultural background:
Ham4Ham follows a long tradition of Latina/o theatremaking that dates back to when the events in Hamilton were happening. … The philosophy behind this is simple. If the people won’t come to the theatre, then take the theatre to the people. While El Teatro Campesino‘s ‘taking it to the streets’ originated from a place of social protest, Ham4Ham does so to create accessibility, tap into social media, and ultimately generate a free, self-functioning marketing campaign. In this way, Ham4Ham falls into a lineage of accessibility as a Latina/o theatremaking aesthetic.

Embrace That Uniqueness Of Being Latino Ceos Tell Audience At San Diego Conference
Four-day LAttitude conference covers health, entertainment, real estate, tech and finance with a Latino focus.
In the same breath, he underscored how much small businesses and the theatre relied on the support of community members to help them as they were battered by the pandemic.
Its about collaboration. You cannot make theater alone you cannot have a small business survive alone. And Im not saying that in like an artsy were all in this together kind of way, Miranda said. We really rely on our community to keep us alive. And thats been a lesson that I sort of take forward into the world of small business.
In addition to his accolades in the entertainment industry from a Pulitzer Prize to three Grammys Miranda has added small business owner to his extensive resume.
Last year, he and his friends resurrected the Drama Book Shop in Manhattan, a century-old store for all things theatre, after rent hikes threatened its closure. That small business was where he wrote in the basement of the shop, found inspiration and where he would meet with his longtime friend, collaborator and the director of Hamilton, Thomas Kail.
Miranda has worked with some of the worlds biggest brands from Disney to American Express, and he offered advice on building an authentic brand as an entrepreneur.
I believe very firmly that the truth is easier to remember, he said. People ask me how do you stay so authentic? Its because I can never remember if Ive made something up.
We Don’t Talk About Bruno
Bruno is a pivotal character for Encanto as he was really the key to unlocking the secrets surrounding Mirabel’s prophecy. But unfortunately, the Madrigals don’t actually talk about Bruno, leading to the much-loved song that acts as an ensemble piece for the family.
With each Encanto character providing their own personal account of their interactions with the forgotten seer, the song details both the terrible events and the honest truths that Bruno supposedly unleashed on the community. With a brilliant hook and beautiful combination of song and rap, this Colombian-inspired melody has easily become an earworm.

Talk about guts!
The risk paid off. Miranda got a standing ovation, and took that as a sign to keep working on his mixtape and potentially turn it into a live performance. He wrote more songs and did readings for college students that drew massive crowds.
With all of this buildup, it was no surprise that Hamilton sold out for months and smashed award records when it released or that Lin-Manuel was invited back to the White House to perform the musical a few years later.
What Next For Lin
Miranda is best known for his theatrical and film-making exploits, most notably the movies In the Heights and Tick, Tick Boom!, and the Broadway sensation Hamilton.
He has continued his prolific work rate this year and is heavily involved in the upcoming live-action version of The Little Mermaid. Disneys reimagining of the classic is due to be released in 2023 and Miranda agreed in 2016 to be a songwriter alongside Alan Menken. It has since been announced that Miranda will also co-produce the film with Marc Platt and Rob Marshall.

Tickets to the tour’s run in San Franciscoits debut citysold out within 24 hours of release the number of people who entered the online waiting room to purchase tickets surpassed 110,000. Just days after the first U.S. tour began performances in San Francisco, news emerged that a second U.S. tour of Hamilton would begin in Seattle for a six-week limited engagement before touring North America concurrently with the first tour. To distinguish the first and second touring productions, the production team has labeled them, respectively, the “Angelica Tour” and the “Philip Tour”.
Puerto Rico/San Francisco
A filmed version of “Alexander Hamilton” was created featuring the Puerto Rico production and was shown as the final part of Hamilton: The Exhibition in 2019.
But He Has Created More Award
In fact, Hamilton isnt even the first Tony-winning musical Miranda created. Nearly a decade earlier, he was the star as well as the lyricist and composer of In the Heights. That show debuted on Broadway in 2008, and a film adaptation starring Hamilton actor Anthony Ramos hit theaters and HBO Max in June 2021. In the Heights marked Mirandas first Broadway production, but he has since worked on several other shows.
Most notably, Miranda was the co-composer and lyricist for Bring It On: The Musical. The show based on the 2000 movie only ran for a few months in 2012. And in 2014, Miranda wrote the book, music, and lyrics of a one-act production called 21 Chump Street, which also starred Ramos. Most recently, Miranda and his hip hop comedy group Freestyle Love Supreme performed on Broadway from October 2019 to January 2020.
How To Apply This Idea To Your Work
Ive seen this process of create, test, improve and create play out over and over again in the entrepreneurial world. In fact, its what Eric Reis outlines in his book, The Lean Startup.
Another great example of this is Sara Blakey, the founder of Spanx. She started small with an incredibly simple prototype that she created by cutting the legs off a pair of old pantyhose. She tested this ultra-simple version with her friends and family, then improved it until it became a best-selling product that made her a billionaire.
Drew Houston, who co-founded Dropbox, also started simple. He didnt build a file-sharing software right from the beginning. He made a concept video and posted it online. That simple video resulted in a 70,000+ waitlist and many helpful suggestions on how to improve it. These early tests worked just like Lin Manuel Mirandas White House performance. They validated the idea and laid the groundwork to grow and improve.
Its not just entrepreneurs, but investors who believe in this method. I spoke with Carl Richard Fairbank, expert investor and entrepreneur, who explained, Successful entrepreneurs know they cant just spring their ideas on people out of the blue. They start with the rough version of an idea and share it, get feedback and make improvements from there, he said. Its an ongoing loop, but its also how you determine if there is an audience for your business in the first place.
Opening And Box Office Records
Hamilton‘s off-Broadway engagement at The Public Theater was sold out, and when the musical opened on Broadway, it had a multimillion-dollar advance in ticket sales, reportedly taking in $30 million before its official opening.
By September 2015, the show was sold out for most of its Broadway engagement. It was the second-highest-grossing show on Broadway for the Labor Day week ending September 6, 2015 ” rel=”nofollow”> The Lion King).
Hamilton set a Broadway box office record for the most money grossed in a single week in New York City in late November 2016, when it grossed $3.3 million for an eight-performance week, the first show to break $3 million in eight performances.
