The Music Box Theatre
The inspiration to design the Music Box Theatre began when Sam K. Harris, the renowned theatrical producer, made a proposal to his friend Irving Berlin in 1919: if Berlin would create a musical revue, Harris would find a home for it. Berlin ended up writing The Music Box Revue, and the Music Box was constructed to house the show in 1920. In the 1920s, the Shuberts began obtaining shares of the theatre from Harris. Harris died in 1941, and his wife sold half of the shares in the theatre to the Shuberts and half to Berlin. Berlin and the Shuberts had equal ownership of the theatre from that point on until 2007 when the Shuberts acquired full ownership.

Development And Early Years
Venue for revues
According to one account, the name for the Music Box Theatre arose from a conversation between Sam H. Harris and Irving Berlin in 1919. Harris had suggested building a theater, to which Berlin suggested the name “Music Box”. Harris liked the name and suggested that Berlin could write a song for the new theater. In March 1920, Harris and Berlin bought the properties at 239 to 245 West 45th Street from L. and A. Pincus and M. L. Goldstone. They then announced plans to build the Music Box Theatre on the site. By that May, Crane had prepared plans for the theater. Harris planned to stage twice-yearly revues, and he subsequently ended his long-running partnership with George M. Cohan.Hassard Short was named as the first general stage director, spending over $240,000 on the first show. The Music Box ultimately cost more than $1 million, $400,000 for the building itself and $600,000 for the land the theater overran its original budget by about $300,000. The Music Box was one of the only Broadway theaters to be built for specific producers’ work.

The Mezzanine hand over the Orchestra section at about row J. Just like the Orchestra, you want to avoid seats in the far right and left in the Side Mezzanine sections. The box seats jut out quite a bit at this theater, which can obstruct your view of the stage if you are sitting in the higher seat numbers. However if you sit above row G in the Mezzanine and are on the far sides, the view should not have an obstruction. Because of the size of the theater, the last row in the Mezzanine will still provide a good view of the stage, so dont be afraid to sit back there if you are on a budget.

This place is amazing! The green signs draw you right to it. Once inside you have that old world charm everywhere you look for sure. They have a collectible stand as well as a bar with snacks too. The performance was amazing and the effects were the bomb.com! Seating is tight but the bathrooms were better than I thought they would be for this place. The only problem is parking Ive gone out to dinner near here and have gotten a voucher for free parking. This place only gets you a discount on astronomically parking costs. For the price of this ticket it should include parking for free in the a garage. Anyways, come see a show here and be immersed in very powerful acting!

The Music Box Theatre opened in 1921 with the Music Box Revue, featuring songs by then popular composer/lyricist Irving Berlin. It was built by Berlin and producer Sam H. Harris specifically to house these revues, and the theater hosted a new one every year until 1925 when it presented its first play, Cradle Snatchers, starring Humphrey Bogart. At 1,010 seats, the space was perfect for these sorts of lavish revues, as well as the large cast plays that were also popular during the Great Depression Era. The celebrated playwriting team of George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart had a string of hits here, from their first collaboration Once in a Lifetime to their smash The Man Who Came to Dinner. And Berlin wasn’t the only great composer of the time to have his music play in the Music Box — Cole Porter and the Gershwins also had shows here. In the 1950s, playwright William Inge found a theatrical home at the Music Box Theatre, where he had success with Picnic, Bus Stop, and The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Since then, offerings have been as varied as the musical revue Side By Side By Sondheim, the long-running murder mystery Deathtrap, and the 1996 stage version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein movie musical State Fair. But no matter what plays at the Music Box, it remains one of the most prized jewels of the Great White Way.
