Make Mine Music Blu Ray

Coming Up Shorts Withthe Band Concert

Disney’s Make Mine Music Blu-Ray Unboxing

Mickey and his friends are trying to hold a band concert in the park, but have to deal with the interruptions of ice cream vendor Donald Duck and a tornado. Essentially the first Mickey Mouse short done in Technicolor, this also helped Donald Duck on his way to becoming a star at Disney. Its been a few years since Ive seen this one, but I cant deny that its still a good one! Watching Donald as he tries to start playing Turkey In The Straw on his flute is a lot of fun! Of course, the relationship between him and Mickey is a bit more antagonistic, but that provides a lot of the humor here . Its an oldie, but a goodie!

And Now For The Main Feature

Initially, Walt Disney started out with plans for a follow-up to Fantasia, which would have included some of the music that ended up in Make Mine Music. His plans were put on hold due to World War II, as well as much of his staff being drafted into the army/enlisted to help with training and propaganda films. As a result, he found himself with various ideas and stories that were either too long for theatrical shorts, or too short to be full-length features. So he decided to put these various ideas together into a package film of different segments with varying lengths. The movie itself was fairly well-received by audiences, although its initial theatrical run would be its only time in theaters. Some of the different segments were later reissued as individual shorts instead of getting a wide theatrical reissue for the whole film.

Due to the nature of this film, with its shorter sections, I will in some respects be treating them like my normal Coming Up Shorts! comments on theatrical shorts.

The Martins And The Coys

Blue Bayou

All The Cats Join In

Without You

This segment features Andy Russell singing a tune as we see nature through a window during and after a rainstorm. Like the earlier Blue Bayou short, this one really doesnt have any action going on. The animation is interesting, especially as we see nature through the rain falling down the window. Thats honestly the only redeemable part of it, as the song itself is rather forgettable .

Casey At The Bat

Two Silhouettes

Johnnie Fedora And Alice Bluebonnet

This segment told the romantic story of two hats who fell in love in a department store window in New York City. When Alice Bluebonnet was sold, Johnnie Fedora devoted himself to finding her again. They eventually, by pure chance, meet up again and live happily ever after together, side by side. The Andrews Sisters provided the vocals. Like the other segments, it was later released theatrically. It was released as such on May 21, 1954.

Were starting today with more new disc reviews…

First up is from Universal. I did the 4K video, audio, and extras portions and the film review itself is by our old friend and ex-Bits staffer Dr. Adam Jahnke. The film has really never looked or sounded better. Its a great remaster.

Next, weve reviewed from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Again, I did the 4K video, audio, and extras portions and the actual film review is by our friend Todd Doogan, also a former and longtime Bits staffer.

Also, from Severin Films. If youre wondering why the cover artwork is just the title only, its because Google Adsense sometimes flags our site when we post images of Blu-ray and 4K titles that feature graphically violent or suggestive imagery. When they do that, we lose advertising revenue. So once in a while, this becomes necessary. But all you have to do is click on the cover in the review to see the actual cover art on Amazon.

These Shorts Provide Examples Of:

Ink & Paint: The Package Films
  • : Implied. All the Cats Join In has a brief shot of a stereotypically nerdy-looking girl who appears just long enough to turn up her nose at the cool kids headed to the malt shop.
  • The Martins and the Coys was removed from the original Gold Classic Collection VHS and DVD release of the movie, and the Disney Movie Club Exclusive Blu-ray, for excessive gunplay.
  • Some versions also digitally erase some side boob in All the Cats Join In .
  • “Blue Bayou” AKA “Clair De Lune” was intended as a full segment for Fantasia, but was ultimately scrapped as a victim of Fantasia being too long as it already was. The version used here is a edited down version. Fortunately, the full uncut version was included as an extra on the Fantasia Anthology DVD and the Best of Mickey Blu-ray.
  • Dead Hat Shot: From Peter and the Wolf:
  • In the short, the wolf chases the duck into a tree, and comes out with feathers flying, licking its chops. Subverted when the duck turns up alive at the end.
  • Again subverted with a literal Dead Hat Shot greeting the three hunters, who immediately assume Peter’s been killed.
  • Despite Sonia’s spirit entering the pearly gates presumably this image is just Peter and friends’ imagination. It’s notable as being one of the earliest examples of the trope, following Snow White‘s and Pinocchio‘s, and possibly the first ever straight example of the trope, as both Snow White and Pinocchio were more or less dead and revived afterwards, whereas Sonia was alive the whole time.

Finale: The Whale Who Wanted To Sing At The Met

The final segment, the finale of the film, is a bittersweet story about a sperm whale with incredible musical talent and his dreams of singing grand opera. A rumor is spread throughout the city about an operatic whale, but is seemingly disproven, therefore the short-sighted impresario Tetti-Tatti believes that the whale has swallowed an opera singer. He concludes this after studying the story of Jonah.

As the curtains close, the film ends.

    Coming Up Shorts Withmusic Land

A war breaks out between the Isle Of Jazz and the Land Of Symphony when a princess violin falls for a saxophone prince . This is a fun cartoon, one that Ive seen many times over the years. The music certainly helps set the tone here, with the more classical music for one group, and the jazzy music for the other. The methods of war, with the rulers essentially leading orchestras that shoot the music at each other is quite memorable. Again, I have a soft spot for this cartoon, and I know I always enjoy seeing it again!

‘make Mine Music’ Turns 75 Today But It’s The Only Disney Animated Film Not Streaming On Disney+

One of the easiest, most painless binge-watching projects you could embark upon during the pandemic is to dive into the canon of Walt Disney Animation Studios films. Sure, you could add Pixar to the list, but getting to experience the depth and breadth of mainstream animation history, fromSnow White and the Seven DwarfstoRaya and the Last Dragon, would be an effective crash course, and a mighty enjoyable one to boot thanks to the still fairly young streaming service Disney+.

But while Disney+ enables viewers to stream everything from Marvel superhero fare to oldStar WarsTV movies to National Geographic specials, there’s an odd gap in that animation crash course, one you might not even be aware exists. That gap is the package filmMake Mine Music, which turns 75 today. You might figure today’s a fine day to watchMake Mine Musicconsidering that birthday how better to celebrate? Sadly, you’re out of luck: it’s the only Disney animated film that’s not streaming on Disney+. In fact,Make Mine Musichas never been available for streaming or purchase on Blu-ray. This is the kind of film that would make a perfect selection for the Out of the Disney Vault columnhereat /Film, except it’s still locked in that vault. The obvious question is: why?

My Reaction that “Melody Time” and “Make Mine Music” are Coming to Blu-ray this November
    Main article: Make Mine Music

Make Mine Music was originally released on laserdisc in Japan on , 1985. The Japanese laserdisc is completely uncut and often sells for over $100 as a result. No unedited release has been scheduled in America yet.

Make Mine Music’s sole home video release in the United States was on VHS and DVD on , 2000, under the Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection title. Before, two of its segments were released on home video individually with addition cartoons added to them in the ‘80s and ‘90s. This release is edited to remove The Martins and the Coys in it because it has “graphic gunplay not suitable for children”, and All The Cats Join In had an edit to shrink the lead girl’s bare bust size to make it less vulgar. No other release has been scheduled yet.

European Region 2 DVDs also include the unedited feature but was not released in the United Kingdom, making it the only classic unavailable at the time. It was finally released in the U.K. for the first time on DVD on , 2013, with The Martins and the Coys intact, but still takes the US approach by editing out the sexualized imagery in All The Cats Join In.

It is one of only two films in the Disney Animated Classics canon never to see a legitimate release on Region 4 DVD in Australia, the other is The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad. It should also be of note that Make Mine Music was never released on VHS in Australia.

    Coming Up Shorts Withfarmyard Symphony

On the farm, all the animals wake up and start the day when the rooster crows. This Silly Symphony cartoon really has no plot, just an emphasis on music. Honestly, this is one of the few Disney cartoons Im not overly familiar with. Ive seen it a handful of times, but I recognize the footage that was reused in the later 1951 Chip n Dale short Chicken In The Rough. I much prefer that later short with its humor , but this one is fairly entertaining.

Garvs Picks Of The Week: Make Mine Music And Melody Time

For the release week of November 2nd:

Garvs Picks of the Week: Make Mine Music and Melody Time : We tend to think of the Walt Disney corporation as a juggernaut today, but during the years of World War II, the company was in poor financial shape, which wasnt helped by the loss of much of the foreign market. After Bambi , the studio shut down production on full-length animated features. Instead, they focused on more inexpensive package films, which grouped multiple animated shorts and sometimes included live action sequences. These films are mostly forgotten today, but two of them, Make Mine Music and Melody Time are getting individual Blu-ray releases this week. Make Mine Music features nine shorts, including the Casey at the Bat and Peter and the Wolf.Melody Time features seven shorts, including Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill. Both of the discs also include three bonus animated shorts in the extras. These Blu-rays are exclusive to the Disney Movie Club, so they cannot be purchased at standard retailers. If you are interested in joining the club, it can be found through this link.

    Additional Titles of Interest

The Beast Must Die : Two restored, Argentinian film noirs are coming to Blu-ray through a partnership between Flicker Alley and the Film Noir Foundation. Both include introductions by Eddie Mueller, the host of Noir Alley on TCM. This one stars Narciso Ibáñez Menta as a mystery writer who investigates the hit-and-run murder of his nine-year-old son.
