Learn How To Read Music

Lines And Spaces Of The F Clef

HOW TO READ MUSIC IN 15 MINUTES – with Julian Bradley

Check out the lines of bass clef here:Check out the spaces of bass clef here:

Now lets use this new knowledge to practice the bass clef notes. Check out this example first:

Is this note on a space or line? This note is on a line. So lets count from the bottom up, Good Boys Do Fine, F, the note on the fourth line of bass clef is F.

Try another example:

Is this note on a line or space? This note is on a space. Count up from the bottom All Cows, C, the note on the second space of bass clef is C. Excellent work!

If this is seeming a little complicated or confusing, a good thing to do is to look for online piano lessons, or use the free trial of the Skoove Piano Teaching App!

What Is The Treble Staff

Lets start by looking at the treble staff. This is the staff that typically shows which notes to play with your right hand. If you are learning how to read music notes for the first time, you must familiarize yourself with the letter names of the lines and spaces.

The treble clef symbol looks like this:

Youll notice in the image below that the treble clef symbol circles around the G line. If you can remember that, youll always be able to figure out the rest of the lines and spaces on the staff.

On your staff paper, label the white spaces with FACE starting with the first space at the bottom of the page and going up, then the lines EGBDF starting at the bottom line going to the top line. There are little tricks to help you remember the names of the lines and spaces for example, just remember the phrase Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge.

Learning And Performing Music Boosts Your Self

Learning how to read and play music teaches you some pretty important life skills, like self discipline and perseverance but its also a huge confidence-booster.

Sure, reading music isn’t essential for performing , but the process of practising how to play and perform a piece of music is immensely satisfying, and allows you to express yourself more openly.

Plus, performing and practising are great stress relievers, because absolutely everything youre thinking and feeling at that moment goes into what youre playing. Its exhausting, but really good for the mind.

Reading Dynamics And Expression

  • 1Get loudâor get soft! When you listen to music, you have probably noticed that it’s not all at the same volume, all the time. Some parts get really loud, and some parts get really soft. These variations are known as “dynamics.”XResearch source
  • If the rhythm and meter are the heart of the music, and notes and keys are the brains, then dynamics are surely the voice of the music. Consider the first version above.
  • On your table, tap out: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and 8, etc. . Make sure every beat is tapped at the same loudness, so that it sounds a bit like a helicopter. Now take a look at the second version.
  • Notice the accent mark above every F note. Tap that out, only this time, accent every beat that you see the accent mark. Now, instead of a helicopter, it should sound more like a train. With just a subtle shift in accent, we completely change the character of the music!
  • 2Play it piano, or fortissimo, or somewhere in between. Just like you don’t always talk at the same levelâyou modulate your voice louder or softer, depending on the situationâmusic modulates in level too. The way the composer tells the musician what is intended is by using dynamic markings.XResearch source
  • There are dozens of dynamic markings you may see on a piece of music, but some of the most common ones you’ll find will be the letters f, m, and p.
  • p means “piano,” or “softly.”
  • f means “forte,” or “loud.”

The Treble Clef And Notes In The Treble Clef

The Treble Clef contains 5 lines and 4 spaces in it, and each of these lines and spaces has a specific note that is located there.

    The notes on the 4 spaces are F, A, C, & E.

    The notes on the 5 lines are E, G, B, D, & F.

Say the note names on the Spaces going from the bottom to the top several times. Then do the same thing with the notes on the Lines, again going from the bottom to the top.

Now let’s look at the notes in the Bass Clef.

    What Is The Bass Staff

After youve memorized all of the letter names on the lines and spaces for your right hand , you can move on to reading piano notes on the bass clef, where the notes on the lines and spaces will usually be played with your left hand.

The bass clef symbol looks like this:

Youll notice that the bass clef symbol has two dots on either side of the F line. If you can remember that, youll always be able to figure out the rest of the lines and spaces on the staff.

Practice drawing the bass clef. Then with the spaces at the bottom of the page, name your spaces ACEGB . Next, name your lines starting at the bottom of the page GBDFA .

    Brush Up On The Basics

Cracking the code of music notes is not nearly as hard as it sounds. Treat learning to read music like you are learning a second language. Because thats just what it is.So lets explore the fundamentals behind notation:

    • The staff : This is where it all begins. Youve undoubtedly seen these in a music lesson book. It consists of five lines and four spaces. Each individual line represents a different letter, which then represents a note. The five lines and spaces represent the notes A-G, and note sequence moves in alphabetical order up the staff.
    • Treble Clef: This symbol is place on every line on each staff to show the notes that will played, sung, vocal and instruments that can reach a higher note.
    • The Bass Clef: Notes the music in lower registers. If you play a low pitched instrument like a tuba or cello, you will write your music here in bass clef
    • The Notes:This is where you make the music happen! Each note head is either filled filled in black or open Wherever the note head sits on the staff -on line or a space will determine which note you will play.
    • Stem: This is the body of the note. It is either extended downwards, or upwards. The direction of the line does not affect how you play the note, its just there to make the nose easier to read.
    • Flag: The note flag is the curvy part on the head that points right. It serves to let you know how long to hold a note

    How Reading Music Works

How To Read Music – For Beginners

    1. Up and Down

Musical notation is little bit like a graph with two axes. It shows us what goes up or down and it shows us when and for how long those notes should happen . So look at these two notes side by side. Which note do you think represents the higher note?

Of course, the higher-sounding note is represented by the higher-written note, so the answer is number 2! Lets try another question. This time we have 3 written notes. Which one note represents the lowest sounding do you think?

Of course, the lowest-sounding note is represented by the lowest-written symbol, so the answer is number 2! Simple , right? Now lets look at the notes from a different angle.

    2. Moving Forward

All music moves forward as it unfolds in time so musical notation has a way of reflecting that too. This is part of the vast topic of rhythm and its all about when notes are played andfor how long. This will take some practice but even with a little bit of instruction you will be able to see it.

Below is a series of 7 written notes the notes are the same in that they dont go up or down. The difference is in how long they are played for. You see, that first note is the longest, the one note after it is shorter and the four after that are even shorter still:

Notice that the way I wrote the notes in the picture above is so that the longest note has the most space after it. That gap gets shorter for shorter notes because the next note is due in less time.

Why Is Reading Music So Hard

Youve been trying to learn to read music the hard way. The wrong way.

Unfortunately, many people are taught by a weak process that creates information overload. Its too much stuff to process and it IS hard. Its almost impossible.

Thats why I wrote How To Read Music See it, Say it, Play it.

You only study 1 thing at a time. The right thing.

You also learn with play-along music tracks. Songs are specially written for one note, then two notes, then three

The system has worked for thousands of musicians. It an 0ld-school process, with a modern presentation.

Lets Be Clear: If You Dont Learn To Read Music You Limit Yourself

We challenge you to find a pianist who learned to read music and regretted it. But there are plenty who wish they had learned earlier. Like any language, you can get by without taking the time to read or write, especially in the beginning. In the long term, however, being able to read music holds a range of benefits, and you limit yourself without them.

Its quicker than you think. This isnt strictly a good thing. But if the only downside to learning is time and effort, its worth stressing that it doesnt take that long. Notation may look like lines and dots on a page right now, but you will be reading and playing your first piece of music in no time. Work systematically, gradually build up knowledge of new notation, and you will be surprised how quickly you understand literally everything.

Sight reading. This is the ability to read a piece of music for the first time and play as you go, as easy as reading this sentence out loud. It takes time and practice, but eventually if you have the written music, you can play it. Since written music is widely available online, learning to sight read music gives you the ability to immediately play practically anything.

A permanent memory aid. Playing by ear means remembering everything you ever decided to learn. Written music offers a record of anything you have ever learned, or plan to learn. If you dont have a perfect memory, you can develop your own notation. But when there is a universal language already in place, why bother?

When it comes to your free time, being able to read music opens up so many doors. Looking for something to do on Sunday afternoons? Join a local choir. Constantly finding yourself at a loose end on Tuesday nights? Have a look at orchestras in your area.

Then, you and all your new music friends will be able to make fun, geeky jokes together. Logic: if your current friends dont appreciate your A flat minor jokes, theyre probably not the kind of friends you want to be hanging out with anyway.

How To Read Music Made Easy

January 7, 2014 By Sara Mullett

Learning to read music can be rather daunting, especially if you havent had any music lessons before. Of course, we all know there is no quick fix, it is something anyone can do with practice when broken down into easy steps.

In this post I hope to dispel a few myths, and hopefully give enough encouragement for one or two new beginners to take the plunge and have a go.

    What Are Note Values

In sheet music, the notes we see on the staff give us important information. They tell us what notes to play on the keyboard. They also tell us something else: how long to sustain those notes, and what rhythm to play. There are four basic types of notes to learn first: eighth note, quarter note, half note, and whole note.

Every note has a specific value. The value refers to the number of beats that note is held within a measure of music. Whole notes are four beats, half notes get two beats, quarter notes get one beat, and eighth notes get half a beat.

Its not just notes that get counted in music though. Moments of silence get counted too. Luckily we have rests to tell us how long to stay silent, and rests have corresponding value to music notes: a whole rest gets four beats, a half rest gets two beats, a quarter rest gets one beat, and an eighth rest gets half a beat.

    Treble Clef And Bass Clef

The staff marking at the start of each line tell you the register of the instrument and how to read the notes.

Notation for bass instruments is written in bass clef and notation for other instruments is commonly written in treble clef.

There are other clefs as well but theyre used much less often, so Ill focus on bass and treble clefs here.
