Lover’s Rhapsody

Music for Lovers Only is a studio album of easy-listening music by Jackie Gleason, wherein he conducted an orchestra performing standards. It was released by Capitol Records on October 27, 1952, as a 10-inch LP with eight songs. It was reissued as an EP in January 1953, followed in 1955 by a 12-inch LP with eight additional songs. The extent of Gleason’s involvement with the album’s creation has generated debate since its release.

Jackie Gleason Musical Discography

In 1952 Gleason actively pursued record companies in an attempt to market a type of mood music he had dreamed of for years. None was interested until the following year when Capitol Records agreed to record his first album, Music for Lovers Only. The sound was haunting and elegant, romantic, lonely, and lush. Years earlier, in Hollywood while on the set of Orchestra Wives, he met Bobby Hackett. Some day well work together, pal, he told him. The wail of Bobbys trumpet was not easily forgotten and Gleason wanted him and a hundred violins for his albums. The violins diminished to 27 but Bobby Hackett remained the sole king of the coronet.

Music For Lovers Only/music To Make You Misty Review

A repackaging of Jackie Gleason‘s two most popular albums, Collectors Choice Music’s Music for Lovers Only/Music to Make You Misty is an instrumental easy listening CD with a unabashed romantic mood. 1953’s Music for Lovers Only was Gleason‘s most popular and sold over 500,000 copies. The disc includes instrumental versions of “My Funny Valentine,” “I’m in the Mood for Love,” and “I Only Have Eyes for You.” 1957’s Music to Make You Misty was released in the last year Gleason‘s albums were hits. The album includes “Prelude to a Kiss,” “You Were Meant for Me,” and “I’m Through With Love.” Both have sweeping string arrangements and lush cinematic moods. Music for Lovers Only/Music to Make You Misty does not include all the tracks added to the original versions when expanded after their initial release. Eight songs were added to each album in the 1950s. This combined CD does contains the bulk of the original material, however. Fans of lounge music will find this CD not the silly, up-tempo album that they might prefer. Rather, it is a romantic collection of ballads. Reminder: This disc is different than Jack Lemmon‘s albums or Gleason‘s own And Awaaay We Go! because there are no vocals or comedy routines on this pure orchestral pop CD.

Questions About Authorship Of Arrangements

The precise nature of Gleason’s role in the making of Music for Lovers Only has been a matter of speculation since its release. Although the album credits him with having presented, selected, and conducted the music on the album, it also credits Pete King and producer Richard Jones as arrangers. The widespread public perception was that Gleason had either played a lead role as arranger, or was taking credit for another’s work. In interviews, Gleason confirmed that his role in the production of the album went beyond selection and conducting, but also acknowledged Kingâs work as arranger and collaborator.

Although Gleason had no formal musical training, he could play trumpet, piano, and organ sufficiently well to convey his ideas to King. “I pick the notes out on an organ,” Gleason told the New York Daily News. “I have a way of marking them down so can interpret them.” Gleason struggled to convey his ideas to professional musicians. Having no knowledge of musical terminology, he resorted to poetic metaphors which they found frustrating to understand.

An immaculate masterpiece of 70’s folk, Blue hasn’t aged a day since its release in June 1971. But why are todays artists still so fascinated by this fourth, intimate album by the Canadian singer-songwriter ?

In the mid-1980sat the height of his fame with Wham!George Michael decided to embark on a solo career. Following the release of huge hits like Faith and Freedom! 90, he would soon shoot into international superstardom. The boyish charm he possessed in the early days of his music career eventually began to take on a much more mature, masculine edge, setting him on a trajectory to become a revolutionary global icon.

Along with his former employer Miles Davis, pianist Herbie Hancock is the other founding father of jazz-fusion. In 1973, his album “Head Hunters” laid down the Holy Scriptures of the most successful union of jazz improvisation and funk psychedelic trance. Afros and platform boots all around!
