Lets Reconcile These Naming Systems

Knowing the relationship between these naming systems is not rocket science I guarantee you that if you give a few minutes to studying and thinking, youll figure out the following:

C is do and 1D is re and 2E is mi and 3F is fa and 4G is sol and 5A is la and 6B is ti and 7

Depending on the musicians you hang around with, youll come across people who use any of these naming systems and if youre familiar with the number system and youre provided with information written on the sol-fa system, youll find it challenging to flow.

But if you know all three systems, it doesnt matter what youre told, youll comprehend that from D to G is from the 2 to the 5 and also from re to sol.

How To Write Sheet Music On A Computer

Just try to imagine how much more prolific the old music masters could have been if they had only had todays technology. Early composers had to laboriously write out the music, after first lining the paper and then hand copying all the parts. Today with a click of the mouse and a good notation software program, it is possible to do what a composer does best: write music. Even with a minimal amount of training and talent, it is possible to score a song in a very short period of time.

The Grand View Of All Notes On The Lines And Spaces In Treble And Bass Clef

Teaching Composition

Here you have all of the notes on both the lines and spaces in each clef, for easy review. Take some time to read each note in each clef, and then try to look away and name all of your Space notes in each clef or all of your line notes in each clef.

Keep doing this each day until you can name the notes without looking at any hints.

**Remember to say in the beginning whether the note is on a line or on a space, as this will help reinforce that information in your brain and your fingers when you play it on the piano.

** Remember also, to always learn your notes from the bottom line or space to the top line or space in the clef that you are working in.

Imagine…

You have a new musical idea on a Sunday morning. Tomorrow, you play with your band.

Yes, this musical idea seems very promising! It would be absolutely fabulous if you could quickly put it in music, at least to have a first outline of it.

You write the theme with Pizzicato, you fill in the score, the chords. A second voice here, a nice bass there…

Later, your printer starts to work…

And the next day, you give the scores in a professional design to the musicians!

Or maybe you are a music teacher and it would be quite useful to create customized exercises for your students…

Or perhaps you are a composer and to register your compositions, you need to print them…

Or maybe you play in a choir or a band and you would simply like to create clean copies of the scores or transpose them…

… but you certainly think of other personal scenarios where Pizzicato could help you, because…

The Unique Challenges And Goals Of Learning To Compose

Composing has some unique challenges, and its important to understand what youre up against. Many of these will probably be familiar to you:

  • There is too much to learn, not enough time to learn it, and its hard to understand on its own.
  • Endless possibilities make starting pieces easy, but finishing them difficult.
  • Its difficult to compose without inspiration, which doesnt always strike.
  • You cant accurately transcribe what you hear in your head, which means your music sounds different than you imagine.
  • Your music theory knowledge is weak and youre not sure how to apply it.
  • You waste a lot of time trying to put together a coherent path to understanding composition.
  • Finally, its really difficult to see how it all this can come together.

What Does It Take To Learn Composition

The fastest way to learn composition is to memorize small fragments of music, and then learn to change and combine those fragments in very specific ways.

The process of changing it, actually forces you to understand it. This is actually much closer to the way composer were traditionally taught .

When I started Art of Composing in 2011, I had a loose idea of the things I needed to learn. But it wasnt very clear in my mind.

So I set out reading just about every music theory or composition book I could get my hands on. And I blogged about it at the same time.

Music Notation: How to write Music Notation

Now you can really play drums with these three note values, mixing them all up as much as you like in the beats you create.

Just as excitingly, with these three note values under your belt, you have the power to read an incredible range of drum beats right off the page.

Take a bow, youve done amazingly well to get this far through the guide and were on the home straight.

Itll take you some time to learn the different permutations of these notes and how they interact with one another, but you are well on your way to a solid understanding of drum score.

If youre unsure about any beat and how it sounds, you can always replicate it in Guitar Pro or count through it slowly.

Use the 1,2,3,4 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and plus the 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a that represent each of the note values weve discussed.

Then match up the sheet music to your counting.

Where do the notes on the page land on your counting? Can you imagine how they would sound over your counting?

Practice On Both Clefs

Learning piano requires being able to read both the treble and bass clef fluently. While its easy enough to learn one or the other, it can be a bit brain-splitting to do them both at the same time.

Weve already talked about FACE and Every Good Boy Does Fine. You should be pretty comfortable with the treble clef, at this point.

The bass clef simply shifts everything down two steps. The mnemonic All Cars Eat Gas will help you remember the spaces of the bass clef. Good Boys Do Fine Always will help you remember the lines.

Now that youre aware of the note names, start off by practicing each clef independently. Develop a routine for memorizing and sight-reading treble clef note names with your right hand.

Then do the same thing with the left hand for the bass clef.

As we mentioned above, the notes that fall below the Middle C make up the Bass clef. To remain consistent with this learning to read music guide, lets also start from the bottom.

Note Lengths And Note Values

A notes length/value tells you how long that note lasts in the music.

If youre playing a slow old blues track, youre likely to have big old note values with lots of time taken up by each note.

As a result, the music feels slow and relaxed. Everyone is taking their time with each note.

If youre into heavy metal, and youre playing thunderous double bass with both feet, the note values are likely to be a lot smaller, with lots of them squeezed together.

This makes the music feel fast and frenzied. These are the kind of notes youd be likely to play in a drum solo too.

DID YOU KNOW? Frank Zappa famously wrote a piece called The Black Page. It was filled with so many small note values, pressed so close together, that the page appeared to turn almost completely black with ink.

A Composition Skill Should Be A Repeatable Process

Harmony, melody, form these are not skills. They are categories.

A composition skill should be repeatable, and have a clear goal.

So here is a goal for you. Compose a one note piece of music, right now.

Lets accomplish this very basic composition skill together, and through this, I think I can show you how youll approach learning composition in general.

Music notation is the language by which musicians communicate with one another. Written music indicates what notes to play, note pitch and rhythm. Other symbols used in conjunction with the notes help tell you how a particular piece of music is played. Writing songs with music notes is the most effective way to read and write songs. While reading and writing music can take anywhere from a few months to a few years for some people to do proficiently, learning the basics can help you get started writing songs immediately. How To Write A Lead Sheet By Hand

If you write a lead sheet by hand you should use the 4 step process mentioned above. Here are some other tips to keep in mind though.

  • Follow basic music notation rules. For example, note stems go up if the note is belowB on the treble clef and go down if the note is aboveB. Also, eighth and 16th notes should have connected stems if they belong within the same beat.
  • Before writing any notes you can mark off 4 measures per line. Music typically comes in 4 measure phrases so it is easier to follow if you have one phrase per line.
  • Write smaller if there are lots of 16th notes in a measure. You dont want to run out of space.

Music Staff And Clef Signs

How to write music programme notes? Part 1/5

An artist needs a canvas to create his or her visual artwork. A musician needs a staff to display music notation. The music staff has five lines and four spaces. The lines and spaces represent the vertical placement of high and low pitches.

The Music Staff

A clef sign is a symbol used to indicate which notes are represented by the lines and spaces. There are several types of clef signs. For the purpose of the basics of music theory: how to write music notation, we will feature two basic clef signs. The treble and bass clef signs.

How Music Is Written Down

There are many ways of writing music including graphic score, grid systems, tablature and chord charts. When you learn to read music the first system you usually learn is staff notation. . A staff is the series of lines and spaces music is written down on.

once you have mastered the order of letters above.

Discovering The Lead Sheets Chords

Lead sheets are often used in jazz, so the chords can look complicated. I have a full article that explores lead sheet chord notation, but for now lets give a quick refresher on the notation style by using an example chord.

Am95

  • A the root of the chord. It is capitalized.
  • m the quality of the chord. m implies minor, no m implies major.
  • 9 the extensions. In this case we extend to using the 9 of the chord and all odd numbers below 9 .
  • 5 the modifiers. In this case the 5 of the chord is flatted.

Finding Chords Online

You may be able to find the chords above the staff on sheet music. If so just copy the chords over to your lead sheet.

If you dont, there is a good chance that there is a chord chart for your song. A chord chart typically displays just the chords and lyrics to a song without the melody.

Before copying the chords onto your lead sheet, though, make sure that the chords match the key of the melody. The chord chart may say what key you are in. If not look at the first and last chord of your chord chart these chords are often the same as the key you are in.

If the chord chart is in a different key, you will need to use this tool to transpose it.

Finding Chords by Ear

Finding chords by ear requires an explanation much longer than fits in this tutorial. Nonetheless, this is an option, and you can click on the link above to get started.

Rests And When Not To Play

Music isnt all about sound, sometimes not playing a note is just as important.

All the different types of musical notes weve learnt above have a corresponding symbol telling the musician not to play and to be silent.

We call these symbols rests.

You can read more about the different music rest symbols here.

What Are Note Values

how to write music notes

In sheet music, the notes we see on the staff give us important information. They tell us what notes to play on the keyboard. They also tell us something else: how long to sustain those notes, and what rhythm to play. There are four basic types of notes to learn first: eighth note, quarter note, half note, and whole note.

Every note has a specific value. The value refers to the number of beats that note is held within a measure of music. Whole notes are four beats, half notes get two beats, quarter notes get one beat, and eighth notes get half a beat.

Its not just notes that get counted in music though. Moments of silence get counted too. Luckily we have rests to tell us how long to stay silent, and rests have corresponding value to music notes: a whole rest gets four beats, a half rest gets two beats, a quarter rest gets one beat, and an eighth rest gets half a beat.

Choosing A Composition Method

  • 1 Sheet music is written on lined notation paper, featuring blank staves on which you can print notes, rests, dynamic markers, and other notes to guide the instrumentalists as they play.
  • If you want to write sheet music free-hand, the old fashioned way of Mozart and Beethoven, don’t worry about drawing your staves on a blank piece of paper with a ruler. Instead, find some free blank staff paper online that you can print out quickly to start filling in with your compositions. If you are really serious though, it would be a better idea to go to a music store and get staff paper there. Its not free like online but your work will look more professional.
  • On many sites, you can even pre-set the key and add the clef markers without having to fill them in yourself. Configure the staves like you want them, download the files, and print them out from your computer.
  • Print out plenty of sheets to practice on and start your compositions in pencil. It can be a messy business trying to get your complicated ideas out on paper, so it helps to be able to erase and make little changes without having to recopy the whole thing.
  • 2 If you want to compose on your computer, you can use software to drag and drop notes, make quick changes and revisions, providing you with easy access and quick saves. Composing on the computer is increasingly popular among contemporary composers, saving you time and effort in writing music.
  • Horn section parts for trumpet , saxophone , and trombone .
