How to Enable Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos on Apple Music

If you subscribe to Apple Music, you can listen to select songs in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Learn which devices support Dolby Atmos, how to change settings for Dolby Atmos, and find answers to common questions so you can start listening.

  • Under Audio, tap Dolby Atmos.
  • Choose Automatic, Always On, or Off.
  • Trigger Alarm: Made For Spatial Audio

What really broke the camels back for me is this playlist on music.apple.com.

Actually great, a playlist where all the tracks have been mixed in 3D audio. That makes my heart beat faster at first, especially when you see the selection, which is quite lush for 3D. Theres a lot from pop to rock, classical and electro.

But wait a minute. Most of the titles and artists look familiar to me. They already had a solid stereo mix, didnt they? YES! Meaning that the slogan made for 3D audio is a lie. I really hate to say this, but something like this could also be called misleading advertising.

Why am I getting hung up on this? Because this is exactly the crux of the matter! I can anticipate the article:

It makes little sense to take an already existing stereo song and mix it again in 3D. You have to consider for the production how 3D audio can be used at all to its benefit.

It can work, but in most cases, it doesnt. Unfortunately, this is exactly what the playlist demonstrates: Most songs sound even better in stereo than in 3D.

Ill get to that in the creative and technical challenges later. But first, lets take a closer look at what “worse” or “better” means for the listener.

It’s not been the clearest rollout of an Apple Music upgrade, but now you can listen to spatial audio with Dolby Atmos on all your Apple devices. Here’s what you have to do, and what you get.

Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos is now available in Apple Music and you can play it directly on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV 4K. You can also listen over the original HomePod, but only if they are connected to Apple TV 4K.

There are several things to note. At launch, Apple says that around 20 million tracks are available with spatial audio, while the rest will follow by the end of the year.

Also, the current launch does not yet include spatial audio with dynamic head tracking. This is music that adjust as you turn your head, and it will reportedly come to Apple Music in the fall.

Apple Music: Which Iphones Support Lossless Quality And Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio

All iPhones running iOS 14.5 and iOS 15 beta will be compatible with lossless quality and Dolby Atmos spatial audio, in addition to Android users who will have access to lossless audio quality sans Dolby Atmos spatial audio. Currently, this means that all iPhone models from the iPhone 12 to the first-generation iPhone SE will be beneficiaries, all the way to iPhones released in 2016).

Compatibility here simply means that you will be able to enable these features on your iPhone. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll actually benefit from them.

For Spatial Audio, we’ve already mentioned that all headphones and earphones that support Dolby Atmos technology are compatible, whether they’re from Apple or not. This means the Bose QuietComfort 35ii is compatible, for example, as with the AirPods Max.

On the other hand, when it comes to lossless quality, it’s a bit more complicated and this subject would certainly deserve a complete article of its own. But to make things simple, neither the AirPods Pro nor the AirPods Max really allow you to listen to lossless music due to the limitations of Bluetooth technology.

The AirPods Max does have an analog audio jack input to bypass the Bluetooth connection, but the analog input converts the signal to digital while compressing the sound at the same time.

Everything you need to know about Apples 3D audio tech for Apple Music and movie soundtracks

During its WWDC keynote briefing in June 2020, Apple announced something that really piqued our interest and sounded like a potential game-changer: spatial audio. Almost two years on and this 3D audio technology has really gained traction in the Apple world.

Essentially Apples take on Dolby Atmos for Headphones and Sonys PS5 3D Audio, Apple spatial audio is designed to deliver surround sound and 3D audio through headphones and in optimal fashion through the AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max and Beats Fit Pro.

The feature first arrived for movies and TV shows as part of iOS 14 in September 2020, and then it was released on Apple Music on 7th June. Since last summer, spatial audio has been extended to tvOS for use with the new Apple TV 4K and it can now also be used with Macs powered by the company’s latest M1 chip.

So how do you get Apple spatial audio? How does the implementation differ between movies and music? And how does it compare to Dolby Atmos? Answers to those questions are just a short scroll away, folks…

  • Press and hold the volume control button
  • Another screen will appear where you’ll be able to see the Spatial Audio icon
  • Tap it once to turn it on or off. It is blue when on and black when off.

In stereo, it has become established to leave the vocals in the middle. Maybe background vocals are added to the left and right, but thats it. For Dolby Atmos Music, this signal is similarly routed to the front in the center. This makes perfect sense for films because the screen is in front of you. Thats exactly why there is an extra channel for 5.1 with the center channel.

The only problem is that we humans cant even localize “from the front” that well. The sound event hits the left and right ear simultaneously and equally loud. So for us, it always sounds like mono. This means that with normal stereo, we localize the sound in our head via headphones. With Dolby Atmos Music, however, this is also the case although it shouldnt be. The sound gets is filtered to add the threedimensional effect, making the singer sound further away than he or she actually is. Thats exactly what you can read in many comments:

The vocals sound somehow muffled and far away.

What Is Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio

Normally, when you listen to a song through headphones, you’re listening to stereo sound. It’s like when you have two speakers on the left and right of your TV. Dolby Atmos offers surround sound, so it’s similar to what you might expect if you had a bunch of speakers all around your living room. Except, instead of having a bunch of living room speakers all around you, this works through your headphones.

Dolby Atmos allows musicians to create songs that specifically place vocals and instruments in certain areas of the “sound stage.” And these are the new types of songs that are now available in Apple Music.

This fall, Apple will build on it with a head-tracking feature for AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro Max that’s already available for things like movies and TV shows that offer Dolby Atmos. When that’s on, it sounds like the music is coming from the device that’s playing it. So, if you have headphones on, and you turn your head, you’ll hear the music shift in the direction of your iPhone, for example. Sort of like the iPhone is the stage.
