Audioquest Dragonfly Black Dac

If you want to stream high resolution music on your phone, tablet, or computer, I recommend the Dragonfly Black DAC from AudioQuest. Its about the size of a flash drive, and plugs directly into your device via USB. If youre using a computer, you wont need any other accessories to use it.

If you want to connect it to an iPhone, youll need this adapter if you want to plug it into a newer Android phone, youll need this adapter. Once its connected, go to your devices sound settings, and make sure the Dragonfly Black has been identified. In my experience, this has happened automatically, unless a pair of Bluetooth headphones were connected to the device at the same time.

When everything looks good, just plug your headphones into the audio out jack on the bottom of the Dragonfly DAC and hit play. Im recommending this DAC because of its small size and ease of use, but it does have one limitation: it can only play digital files with a sampling rate of up to 96kHz.

High resolution streaming services will automatically downsample their files to the highest resolution your DAC supports. If you want to sacrifice some portability and power efficiency for 192Kz support, I recommend the Fulla 3 from Schiit audio.

Streaming Music Through Bluetooth

Once your Echo is plugged in and online, you can actually bypass the Alexa App entirely and use a Bluetooth connection to play music through your phone.

This essentially allows you to pass all audio from your phone through the speaker, which opens up the ability to stream audio from any service you can access on that device.

Step 1. Set up Bluetooth pairing by saying Alexa, pair, while your mobile device is nearby.

The next part of the process is to navigate to the Bluetooth menu on your phone. The steps below is for iOS, but Android should generally be some sequence of opening Settings and navigating to the Bluetooth menu.

Step 2. Open the Settings app.

Step 3. Tap on Bluetooth.

Step 4. If your Echo device is in pairing mode, you should see it listed on this screen under Other Devices.

Tap on it to add it to the menu, and ensure your phone is connected to the smart speaker within the Bluetooth list.

Step 5. Find the music youd like to play through your speaker, and enjoy your favorite tunes on your chosen Echo device!

Once youve gone through this initial setup process, you can connect or disconnect your Echo device to your phone with voice commands like Alexa, connect to , or Alexa, disconnect from .

While there are definitely a few hoops to jump through in order to get your Amazon Echo set up to stream music, youll generally be able to play tracks and adjust settings using just your voice moving forward.

What Are The Options For Streaming Music From Pc To Phone

I’m interested in being able to play music that’s on my computer through my phone – mostly so I can plug the phone into speakers in different parts of the house. Looking for apps, I realise that there are actually some pretty different ways you can do this:

  • Run a music server that’s accessible over the internet, access through app or web browser on phone
  • Run an audio streaming server that provides a single audio stream
  • Use DLNA-supporting apps at both ends to play and share music
  • Sync music from PC to phone regularly, and just play it from there.
  • Am I missing any? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each approach? One concern for me is I’d rather not have music going via the internet, because then it would count doubly out of my internet usage cap.

Also, are there apps that can combine these approaches? It would be great to be able to either drive a playlist from the PC, or select songs from the phone. Extra bonus points for solutions that work for video as well.

My PC is Windows XP, my phone is Samsung Galaxy Note.

    • Yeah, I did – tried VLC Stream & Convert, but it was super flakey for me.

Generally, Galaxy devices have AllShare app which is DLNA certified software. If your device doesn’t have AllShare, install Skifta.

    • Ta – that’s one of the category 2 solutions: sharing all audio from the PC to passive receivers.

    • My PC has to be on 24/7.

Cast The Music To Your Homepod

Once you have music playing and playback is performing as expected, look at the top of the app, where you should see the name of the song or station playing. Now look to the right on this bar, and you will see a small box with a Wi-Fi icon in it. This is the casting tool that you can use to tell CloudPlayer to stream to other devices. CloudPlayer supports AirPlay as well as Chromecast, so finding your HomePod is possible.
