How To Set A Preferred Music App On Iphone Using Siri

How To Change The Default Music App On Your iPhone [iOS 14.5]

Although there are plenty of music apps available on iOS, Apple never let users choose a preferred music service while requesting playback via Siri. Of course, you could manually play music using your app of choice. However, if you were to ask Siri to play a track, it would only use Apple Music. Thankfully, Apple has changed this since the release of iOS 14.5. You can now set your preferred music app while using Siri.

In this post, were going to show you how to set preferred music streaming service on iPhone when requesting music via Siri.

Reset Your Iphone Or Ipads Settings

Unlike resetting your iPhone entirely, resetting your iPhoneâs settings simply restores your iPhones settings to factory defaults.

In this case, the only data youâll lose is your Wi-Fi passwords and your alarms. After resetting settings, youâll need to enter your Wi-Fi passwords and set your alarms again.

Hereâs how to reset iPhone settings:

  • Head over to the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Tap General.
  • Scroll all the way down and tap Reset.
  • Tap Reset All Settings.
  • Enter your Passcode and tap Reset All Settings if prompted.
  • Your iPhone will automatically restart in the process so you wonât have to do that manually. Once youâve reset the settings on your iPhone, check if the âAllow Apps to Request to Trackâ toggle is still greyed out.

How To Change Default Iphone Apps On Ios 14 And Up

It used to be that you couldn’t pick default apps on your iPhone, but that changed in iOS 14. If you’re running that version of the iOS, or newer, you can now pick default iPhone apps other than the ones that come with the factory settings.

For now, you can only pick default iPhone apps in a couple of categories: web browser and email. No other categories of app support changing defaults. The options for the default apps are:

    App Category
    Microsoft OutlookSpark

Here’s how to change your default web browser or email app on iOS 14 and up:

  • If you don’t already have the app you want to set as the new default on your iPhone, get it at the App Store.

  • With that done, tap Settings.

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings screen and find tap the app you want to make the default.

  • Tap Default Browser App or Default Mail App.

  • Tap the app you want to set as the default.

  • Your choice will be automatically saved. Return to using your iPhone the way you want and, whenever you open a link or start a new email, your selection from step 5 will be your new default.

  • Mixed Reactions On The Feature

Change The Default Music App On iPhone [Spotify, Pandora ...

This feature gathered mixed reactions from users worldwide. While some reported issues, others shared their excitement on Reddit. Heres a few of them:

    • SlendyTheMan says, When asking to play a song in CarPlay, it asks what app to use now too.
    • maxrdl says, I have the Music App with a couple of songs and the Spotify app too, I asked Siri to play an artist without specifying Spotify, and it told me it would need accès to my Spotify account and asked if I allowed him to access it, I replied yes, and the song played. Now every command controls Spotify even if not mentioned. Great move.
    • mvbalan says, Wow, good find, OP! It appears to be half baked as when I try to play a specific artist, song, playlist, or album, it defaults to what Ive chosen in the selection menu, but when I say like play some music it defaults to Apple Music.
    • epmuscle says, This seems fairly buggy. I tried this, and it didnt give me a popup. It just goes straight to Apple Music. Looking at your screenshots, you told it to play in the bedroom then it played on your AirPods Pro?

While Im sure the feature will add to music lovers experience, let me know your thoughts about it in the comment section below.

    Ios 145 Beta Shortcomings

As of now, iOS 14.5 is still in the beta testing stage. Beta versions of iOS usually suffer from countless bugs and inconsistencies and the new ability to set a default music app using Siri is not an exception. At the moment its fairly unreliable.

For one, you cannot yet switch to a different default music app after youve already set one. That, too, works unreliably. Sometimes, asking Siri to play Counting Stars on Tidal may abruptly set it as the default music app even though Spotify is originally set to be it.

Theres also apparently no official way to make Siri prompt the original list of third-party apps to choose from once again after youve already set a default music app.

However, several users have reported that either downloading a new third-party music app or consecutively asking Siri to play from a different third-party music app prompts the list once again. This enables you to switch to a different default music app.

Its expected that this newfound ability to set a default music app on your iPhone will improve with forthcoming iOS 14.5 beta releases. The final version of iOS 14.5 that will be released to the public sometime in March is also expected to be much more reliable.

Apple may also offer a toggle within Settings to set a default music app just like it lets you set default mail and browser apps.

How To Change Your Preferred Music App Using Siri In Ios 145

Apple in the iOS 14.5 beta added a new option to help Siri learn to select your preferred audio apps for listening to music, podcasts, and audiobooks, a feature that will undoubtedly be appealing to non-Apple Music fans.

When you ask Siri to play a song, album, podcast, or book, Siri will prompt you for your preferred app. This is not a default setting, but Siri will use this information to learn your app preferences and will select the apps you want to use when you make requests.

There is no specific toggle for you to turn on to select a music service, and Siri may ask again, but this is a way to get Siri to choose the apps you use instead of automatically opening default apps like Apple Music.

Set Your Preferred Music App On Iphone

Prior to the release of iOS 14.5 for iPhone, users had to specifically mention the app they want to use while streaming music. For example, you had to say Hey Siri, play this track on YouTube Music/Spotify. If you simply asked Siri to play a song, it would stream it via Apple Music.

With iOS 14.5, Apple finally added the ability to choose a default music streaming app in Siri. Now, if you request a track on Siri, itll play the song via your preferred music service. Heres how to set a preferred music streaming service on Siri.

    1) Launch Siri on your iPhone and ask it play a track or songs from an artist.

    2) Siri should now pop the question Which app would you like to use with a list of all the Music streaming apps installed on your device.

    3) Choose your preferred app, say Spotify or YouTube Music, and confirm your choice.

Siri may also ask access to the app so it can stream music without interruptions. Next time you request a song via Siri, it will use your selected app to play the song.

Problems You Might Face While Setting A Default Music App On Iphone

Change Your Default Music App in iOS 14.5 (Spotify, Pandora, etc)

iOS isnt perfect. Like any other operating system, its prone to bugs. So, its no surprise if you are facing a problem setting a default music app on your iPhone using Siri.

One of the main problems that you might face is that Siri would not offer you the list of third-party music or podcast applications to choose from. Since prompting the list of apps requires you to speak a phrase, even a slightly deformed sentence might cause the list to not show up.

Another problem that you might face is that even after setting a default music app, Siri would still play songs via Apple Music.

Here’s how to change your default music player on iPhone and iPad to Spotify, Pandora, and others in iOS 14.5.

Currently in both developer and public beta, iOS 14.5 for iPhone and iPadOS 14.5 for iPad brings the new ability to update the default audio player to others besides Apple’s native Music app. With this update, many apps can now be set as the default music player. Apple Podcasts, Pandora, Dark Noise, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn Radio to just name a few.

Apple has had the ability to update the default browser and email client to third-party alternatives for some time. Now, Apple is laying the groundwork for bringing similar functionality to music.

Which Apps Can You Train Siri To Prefer

Only specific music or podcast apps can connect to Siri. YouTube Music, Spotify, Deezer and TuneIn Radio are just a few examples of apps where Siri can actually search them for the songs and podcasts you want to hear.

For other apps like Audible or Bandcamp, if you ask Siri to play something from it, you’ll receive a message like ‘Audible hasn’t added support for that with Siri’. So your music preferences are limited to apps that play nice with Apple.
