Just like how you must learn to walk before you run, its important to know how basic alarms work on Alexa before you make the move to music alarms. There are a few different ways to set alarms on your Echo devices, and thankfully, its easy to do with or without your smartphone or tablet.

Its not just asking Alexa to set an alarm thats easyyou can also ask Alexa to set up a recurring alarm on your devices just by asking Alexa to set an alarm for every weekday, or making an exemption from alarms on the weekend.

What Music Services Are Supported Through Alexa

A majority of music lovers have left their local libraries behind in exchange for paying a monthly subscription to listen to music streaming. By unlocking a whole library for the price of one CD per month, youre able to listen to old favorites, brand-new releases as soon as they drop, and check out all sorts of unlimited-use stations, playlists, and more.

Not everyone has made the move to these streaming services but, unfortunately, its going to be the primary way to set a music alarm on your Alexa device. In this quick guide, were going to take a look at how to use the platform

The Sleep Timer & Bedtime Sounds

Above is the basics of alarm clocks, but what about going to sleep? Well, there are a few neat Alexa skills there as well.

Try Alexa, play ambient sounds to get a list of relaxing soundscapes to drift off to. You can also try things like play bedtime music or play sleep sounds, as well.

Most of Alexas sleep tracks last an hour, but there are also a few clever things you can do. Our favourite is Alexa, turn music off in minutes, so you can drift off and not get woken back up by the sound of crashing waves. Pretty useful.

You can also do the opposite, and say Alexa, loop this track to have it played all night.

is rolling out a new feature to its Alexa-powered range of devices that lets you set music-of your choice- as an alarm to wake you up in the morning or for any other task. This feature can be activated by saying, “Alexa, set an alarm for to < time> to < song> “. You can also ask Alexa to wake you up “every day” to the same song at the same time. The songs can be chosen from your preferred streaming service including Amazon’s Prime Music or partner services like Spotify, TuneIn, and Pandora.

You can choose to play a specific song, artist, album, or even a radio station. You can also choose mood music to begin your day the way you want. The new feature will be available for all Alexa-powered devices including the Echo Dot, Echo Show, and Echo Plus. Fire TV is the only exclusion because it has no support for alarms.

The feature doesn’t seem to have rolled out to all regions as it didn’t seem to work on an Echo device that we tested it on in India.

Amazon had recently also announced that the Alexa is ready for the office environment. Businesses can buy Alexa devices that help employees dial into conference calls, manage their calendars, find open meeting rooms and – not surprisingly – order work supplies from Amazon.

Pair Your Phone Or Tablet Using Bluetooth

Currently, Alexa totally lacks the ability to play any music as an alarm. However, it works really well as an always-on Bluetooth speaker. This means you can pass on the alarm function to your mobile device.

First, you must pair your device with Alexa. Speak, “Alexa, pair.” This will put the speaker in pairing mode. From your mobile device, navigate to Bluetooth settings and select Echo-XXXX to complete the pairing.

Can I Add Custom Sounds To My Alarm

Unfortunately, this doesnt appear to be a feature just yet. For example, if you have an Mp3 file youd like to set up, Alexa doesnt give users the option.

Unfortunately, anyone looking to wake up to their local music will likely be disappointed to learn that it simply doesnt work on their Alexa devices, thanks to the requirement to have streaming music platforms as opposed to anything playing back locally.

Thankfully, there are some streaming options to help. Prime users can still rely on the basic Amazon Prime Music plan to play the majority of popular songs from a limited collection while playing on an Alexa every morning to wake up.

Whether youre looking to find a specific song or artist, or you just need a genre to wake up to, there are enough options on Prime Music to set an alarm each morning to wake up to. With support for free options like Pandora and iHeartRadio, your Alexa can become a pretty decent replacement for your clock radio you used to have by your bedside.

Ask Alexa To Set An Alarm Whispering

A really neat feature that not many people know about is the Whispered Responses. With this option enabled, if you whisper something to Alexa, she will respond whispering, too, at a lower volume. This would be useful if you wanted to set an alarm when someone is already sleeping.

Something important to take into account is that this feature is only available when your Echo device is set to English from the United States.

So, lets see how we can activate the Whispered Responses.

First, follow steps one to three as I explained above to show the SETTINGS screen in the Alexa app. Then click the Alexa Account option, as shown in the picture:

In the next screen, select the Alexa Voice Responses option:

Finally, activate the Whispered Responses option, as shown in the following picture:

Set Alexa On Amazon Echo Wake You Up To Your Favorite Song

Amazon Echo Alexa Music Alarm Clock Feature

A missing feature of Alexa is the ability to set an alarm sound to your favorite music track. Heres how to do it via your mobile device and Spotify.

Alexa, on Amazons Echo devices, keeps getting smarter with new Skills and frequent firmware updates. But currently, one glaring omission is the ability to set the alarm sound to your favorite music track.

Currently, youre limited to a basic set of alarm noises and a handful of celebrity sounds like Alec Baldwin, Dan Marino, and a few others. For more on setting that up, read: Make Alexa Have a Celebrity Wake You Up in the Morning.

So, until this heavily requested feature gets baked in via a firmware update or Skill, youll need to use a workaround. For this example, youll need some help from your Android or iOS mobile device, an app, and a Spotify Premium account.
