Tell A Story With Your Music
Whether youre a singer-songwriter, a DJ, or producer – you have a story to tell that has influenced who you are as a musician. This story should come across on your Music page.
You can accomplish this by organizing your music on the page, then adding information about it in text with your albums and tracks, or in a column on the side.
Be sure to add your new music at the top, to give your returning visitors something to listen to. You can add your back catalog of albums as well, lower down on the page.
This page is the place to tell your story through your songs. Adding all of your music in order will create a flow that reflects your musical journey to date. Relevant text will then help to drive home the message, and create a more personal experience for your fans.

What Type Of Music Do You Make
The type of music you make has a big impact on how likely your fans are to buy CDs. According to Nielsens2017 year-end music report, CDs still make up 51% of total album sales. For some genres like holiday music, jazz, classical music, Christian/gospel music, and childrens songs, CDs are actually the best-selling format. When it comes to rock and country, CD sales fall just shy of streaming in terms of consumption, while genres like pop, hip-hop, and EDM have far fewer CD sales.
Heres a breakdown of popular music consumption rates in 2017:
- Rock: 33% physical albums, 40% streaming
- Country: 31% physical albums, 39% streaming
- Pop: 15% physical albums, 55% streaming
- R& B/hip-hop: 11% physical albums, 69% streaming
- Electronic/dance: 7% physical albums, 69% streaming
Its important to note that even with more streaming-focused genres, people are still buying CDs. Instead of mass producing CDs for as cheap as possible, create limited collectors edition discs and charge more for them.
Include Ways To Share Your Music
Your website is your online hub, and from there, you can share your curated content out onto other platforms. Social media is a good choice, and you can choose what to share depending on which platforms you are most active on.
Just be mindful of your music promotion strategy. When sharing your music online, include some personal words or interesting anecdotes along with it. People may tune out if sharing seems too auto-generated, or gets too repetitive.

Sell Your Music On Your Music Page
The best place for an independent artist to sell music is on your own music website. Many music fans feel a connection with their favourite artists and want to support them. With less live shows, selling music online directly to fans is a good way to do just that.
To start, create a page where you plan to sell your music. Think of it as your online shop. Your music is the product, so you want to show it at its best, to encourage people to buy.
Many of your website visitors will be coming to your website specifically to listen to your music. Be sure that your Music page is clearly marked in your menu so its easy to locate. Then, add a call-to-action right on your Homepage directing traffic to your Music page.
You can sell full albums, EPs, singles and more on your Music page. Make sure they are easy to locate and the buy buttons are clear. Youll want to be sure that the checkout process is seamless and works well on both desktop and mobile devices.

When Were Your Fans Born
Depending on how old your fans are, they may be nostalgic for CDs or, they may have no clue how CDs even work. According to a study from 2017, almost half of Generation Z listens to music on Spotify and YouTube. However, Baby Boomers are still regularly buying CDs.
Ari Herstand suggests that until Boomers are as comfortable with streaming as they are with CDs, its still worth it to print physical discs:
My parents can barely find the App store on their iPhone, let alone figure out how to get music on there and then hook it up to their cars stereo which doesnt have an aux input Yes, until the 45+ crowd is as proficient at playing music from Spotify or iTunes as they are at popping CDs into the player, are still important.
How To Sell Your Old Stuff Online
As you can probably guess, the easiest way to sell your unwanted belongings is online. In fact, there’s a whole army of trade-in sites just waiting to take your junk and fill your palms with gold .
While every site differs in how they do things, generally it’s just a case of entering your product barcode, ISBN or product name to get an instant quote or, better still, scanning with your phone if you use a site with an app.
You might find that some sites have a minimum value or number of items, meaning you’ll need to scour the room for extra items to sell if you haven’t met the minimum amount.
If you’re happy with the quote you’ve been given, simply accept the offer, fill in your details and send your items off in the post. In most cases, the postage is free, but double check this first or you could end up forking out more on postage than you’ll earn from selling your stuff.
Then comes the fun bit: getting paid! Most sites are pretty quick, and once they’ve received your items, your money should be with you the following day.

Will You Buy Any Item Regardless Of The Item’s Condition
Yes! However, the condition of the disc and case greatly affects the price we can offer you. To get the best price for your items:
Cases must be intact and in good condition
Items must generally be of the type that has a market for resale
Discs must be in good condition. This means they must play all the way through without any skips, pauses, or failures to read
Well buy scratched discs, discs with damaged cases etc, but the value of those items will be significantly less than if they were in good shape.

Add Context To Your Music
In addition to talking a bit about your music on this page, get specific with album or single details. Include the genre, the inspiration, where it was recorded, and what makes it special. Your fans will enjoy learning these details, and it feels good to talk about the ins and outs of what made this music important to you.
When you add music to your website, you get the chance to really make your Music page an experience beyond what your fans would get elsewhere. You control the content, and you can add extra information to make your Music page personal. This really helps convert visitors from listeners into supportive fans.
After you place an album with description and artwork on the page, write out a bit more about that album. Talk about your style, and how and when the music was made. You can even add a review or quote about the music. Add this into a text feature above, below, or beside the album.
Add your lyrics into your music players as well, in case your fans miss the days of physical albums that included the words.
Another option is to create a “Lyrics” submenu page for your music section, and post all of your lyrics there.

Craigslist Or Facebook Marketplace
Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are two of the best sites to use when you want to sell to local buyers.
You can use either one for free, create a listing, and get your CD collection in front of a large audience of people who live near you.
You can even list your CDs on both sites just be sure to update your listings when something sells.
I prefer Facebook Marketplace just because you can share your listings quickly and easily to your page, profile, or groups.
But you can also share a link to your Craigslist listing on your social media channels, so it boils down to personal preference.

Sell The Rare/high Value Cds Individually
In the CD world, Id consider a CD that has a value of $5+ a rare/high value SKU. Youll find that a lot of greatest hits albums sell for more than other titles . Sell these CDs individually on EBay versus packaging them with others, as this is how youll get the best total value for these titles and your entire collection.
There is the matter of how to sell them. Ive found that the best platform/method for selling CDs is EBay, with 30-day Buy it now listings. If you sell less than 50 items per month on EBay, there are no insertion fees and total basic fees are 10% of the value of the sale. EBay even offers discounted USPS postage, which lowers the total cost of sale. ALWAYS ship media mail, as it will be cheaper than any other service. If selling 1 CD, I usually set the postage at a flat media mail rate of $3 and ship to the United States only.
Find out the average price these items have sold for recently, then list it at the average price.
