The Other Notes On The Guitar
Starting with the spaces directly above and below the staff.
The open D string is notated just under the bottom line (again remember that it?s all alphabetical.
The 3rd fret e string is notated just above the top line i.e. this note is a G and is notated one space above the F .
What about notes higher and lower than those?
For anything that is higher or lower than those notes we simply add in a small line. The line won?t go across the entire staff like the main lines it will be just wide enough for the note to go onto or under.
For example the C note will be placed on a line just under the staff.
The B would sit just under that:
The A would sit on a second line created:
The G note sits under that second line:
The F note sits on the third extra line:
And finally the E note will sit just under that 3rd line.
The same goes for the higher notes. Playing an A on the high e string the note would sit on a line created just above the staff.
And so on as you get higher and higher notes.
Play around with the notes on the guitar and where they would be located on the staff. The best way to become familiar with this is to play the notes.
What Is The Best Way To Learn Bass Clef
The best way to learn bass clef piano notes is by practicing slowly and consistently. Just like learning to read treble clef, learning to read the bass clef notes on piano takes a bit of practice. However, there are a few helpful tricks that will help to increase your learning speed and ensure that the information sticks with you longer. We will practice with two methods here. The first is to memorize the notes by rhyming, mnemonic tricks like we commonly do with treble clef. The second is an interval method, where we base our reading off a few common interval spacings.

What Is Sheet Music

The ability to read sheet music from a page and transform it into an expressive, moving piece of music is nothing short of magical. Fortunately, this skill is not difficult to learn. Anyone can learn to read music, if they spend a proper amount of time working on it. The first step in reading sheet music is to learn the keys on the piano keyboard.
Practicing Piano Hands Separately Slowly
Sheet music should only be digested in small bits rather than all at once. A simple strategy is to start reading each hand separately at a slow tempo. Take your time going through each measure aiming to be as accurate as possible.
To properly sight read sheet music you should focus on eliminating any pauses or abrupt stops. While note accuracy is important, its very tough to develop a sense of rhythm with constant hiccups.
Because our ears are an important part of making music, its important to try to play everything correctly the first time you encounter a piece of music. To help with this I recommend phantom playing.
Phantom playing is a lot like tapping. You will play the music, except not on the keys. Instead, the music will be played in your lap or on the piano fallboard.
What this does is help establish correct finger placement, recognizing the distance between intervals, and also doubling down on the importance of rhythm. Unlike tapping rhythms, what phantom playing also does is develop a feel of transferring weight between individual fingers.

Understanding The Treble Staff
Unlike most instruments, pianists have the tough task of reading two different music staffs. Together they create the grand staff, however, they contain both the treble and bass clefs.
The treble clef is often referred to as the G clef. The bottom line of the staff is E, and each line after that represents a skipped note. For example, the bottom line is E, the second line is G, the third line is B and so forth. The top line is F.
The spaces of the treble staff also are separated by skips. The first space is F, followed by A, C, and E.
One way to memorize the notes on the treble staff is to use the saying Every Good Boy Does Fine. The first letter of each word represents the order of notes on the lines. For the spaces simply remember the word FACE.
The location of the notes on the treble staff is anywhere from middle C and upward. Middle C is the fourth C on the piano, usually where the brand logo appears.
Characteristics of notes in the treble staff are higher pitched compared to the bass staff. Most melodies you find in sheet music whether its Classical or Pop originate in this area.
While the right hand predominantly plays in the treble staff, there are occasions where the hands can switch roles. This includes hand crossing and occasionally playing pieces up or down an octave from their original location.
Staff And Treble Clef
The Staff is the region where we write the musical notes. This region is formed by lines and spaces. Each line and space is used to represent a different musical note. In the figure below, you can see the lines :
Notice how there are 5 lines on the staff. It is also possible to create more lines to reach other . We will talk about these extra lines shortly, for now just note that each line and space are used to represent a different note in sequence.

Rhymes Help You Remember Bass Clef Notes
Using the note chart to identify each bass clef note would be really slow and cumbersome. Thats why it is common practice for beginners to learn two rhymes that can help them to quickly identify piano notes.
Here is the rhyme for all the line notes:
And the rhyme for all the space notes:
Try to memorize these two rhymes, or even make up your own!
Face Its Not Part Of Your Head
The acronym most piano students use to learn and remember the spaces on the treble clef, is FACE. The bottom space note is F. The space above that is A, then C, and finally E. By knowing this series of notes in an easy way, students can identify the note they need to play on the piano easily. But what those notes on the line? Fear not.

What makes guitar tablature different from other types of sheet music is that there is less information to work with.
Some of you may think that this is a bad thing, but when youre learning how to read guitar sheet music as a beginner, traditional notation can have too much information to work with.
- This makes tablature a simplified and easy way to learn how to pick up and play on the guitar.
- All tabs are read from left to right, so theyre easy to follow along as you learn.

With tabs, there is usually an indication of what each string should be tuned to . When learning how to read guitar sheet music, this is important to make note of in every song you learn.
Not all songs use the standard tuning system that we learn on, and youll want to make sure your strings are tuned to the right notes or else the song will not sound right.
To be noted: when there is no indication of tuning, you can assume that the song simply has
standard tuning E, A, D, G, B, E.

How To Read Rhythm
Each note has a rhythm value that determines its duration in a piece of music.
Rhythms are written using the shape of the note heads, stems and the beams between connected notes.

Each rhythm value is a fraction of the total time in a measure.
- A whole note lasts the entire bar. In common time that means its duration is four whole beats. Its written using a hollow note head with no stem.
- A half note lasts half the bar or 2 beats. Its written using a hollow note head with a stem attached.
- A quarter note lasts for one quarter of a bar or 1 beat. Its written with a solid note head and stem
- An eighth note lasts for half a beat. Its written with a solid note head and stem with a flag. When several eighth notes are written together, theyre connected with a beam.
- A sixteenth note lasts for one quarter of a beat. Its written with a solid note head and stem with two flags. When multiple sixteenth notes are connected with a beam.
Even further divisions are possible, but these are the main note values youll see as youre learning how to read music.

General Skills Which Support Reading Piano Sheet Music
There are 3 other important skills which impact your speed and success when you learn to read piano music note names. They are rhythm, reading ahead, and playing in different positions on the keyboard. The pianist who recognises rhythm easily has more time to focus on notes and expression.
Reading ahead in music requires you to read the upcoming notes while still playing the current ones. It is common when reading text but takes a bit more practice and awareness when you learn to read piano music. Nevertheless, it is a great and powerful tool to help you read music and memorize the piano keys.

Understand The Parts Of The Sheet
The first step that you need to undertake is to understand the parts of a music sheet. If this is the first time you have seen a music sheet, there might be some symbols youre unfamiliar with.
One of the parts that you would notice first is the title of the piece and the author behind it. Its usually centered along the bottom edge of the top margin with the first letter names of each word capitalized. At times, there may be a subtitle printed in a smaller font with the author names below it.
The next parts youll see are the ledger lines. They refer to these as the staff . These lines are where you find the notes. All indicating the sound played on the instrument.
For the piano keyboard, the position of the note will tell the pianist which key to press.
Youll notice various symbols scattered all throughout the sheet. These symbols would denote the counting or which set of notes to use . Some of these will need further study to understand how they behave and how you will proceed with the piece.
Now, look at a music sheet. Youll see that there are two sets or groups of five horizontal lines. These are what you call the staffs.
Bar lines refer to those vertical lines. The horizontal lines that separate them are the measures.
The staff on the top is the Treble Clef. The notes youll find in here are higher than Middle C. The bottom, called the Bass Clef, is where youll find notes lower than Middle C.
