Mental Flip Approach To Match Musical Notes And Their Corresponding Piano Keys

How To Read Notes (Beginner Piano Lesson)

Below is a complete diagram that shows you how each piano key matches to a specific musical note.

It may seem overwhelming at first, so I dont encourage you to remember all the connections.

You will find this approach below is easier to read the musical notes with their corresponding keys:

This is called: The Mental Flip Approach.

From your original sheet music, flip it 90 degrees clockwise.

Then, the order from the low note to the high note in a music sheet transfers into the left side to the right side of the keyboard.

The flow of your music sheet now is from top to bottom.

I will leave the diagram here for your imagination without any further explanation because Im sure that you already get the concept of this approach.

Thats it for my guide on how to read musical notes and their corresponding piano keys.

Put Theory Into Practice

Translating the inky blots on the page through your fingertips into actual music is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to reading piano sheet music. Now that youve spent some time writing things out on the page, its time to start putting that into practice on your actual instrument.

Start with each clef independently, just like you did when you were first memorizing the piano notes. Stick to your regular practice routine, as well. Remember, practice doesnt only make perfect, it also makes things permanent.

Youll want to practice with a metronome if you arent already. You need to be as comfortable with rhythm and harmony as you are with melody. You should also stay in the habit of focusing on musicality, even when youre practicing.

After seeing all the symbols and placement of notes. It is time to identify which note corresponds to the key on the piano. The white keys on the piano would correspond to the keys in the C Scale. Starting from C, followed by the keys D, E, F, G, A, B and ending again at a higher C. You would find them in the white keys on the piano.

The black keys are the ones between some of these white keys. Like the Eb being between D and E. Each of these keys has a place on the staff.

When practicing these sequences of notes, start slow until you feel the pace. From that point, that is when you start learning the song in its actual pace and tempo.

Find The Secret Lines

Okay, now the fun part. Lets look at the treble clef first. Do you see where the circular part of the clef is? It circles around a particular line. That is the G line . That is your point of reference in the right hand. You can always quickly identify the G line because of the clef. Down on the bass clef, look at the two dots on the clef. Find the line running between them. This is the F line .

There are notes higher than and lower than both staffs. They continue in the same alphabetical sequence and are placed as though there were more than just five lines on the staff. The next note above the Treble Staff is a G. It is a space note. The next note up is an A. Because it would be on the sixth line of the staff, it is marked through with a short line to visually identify it as a line note. These lines are known as ledger lines. Go up two notes . The B is marked with a ledger line below it to show that it is a space note above the sixth line of the staff. The C is marked with a ledger line through it AND one placed underneath to show that the C is on the seventh line of the staff. Very high notes on the Treble Staff can have several ledger lines below them to help identify how high they are above the staff.Ledger lines work the same way beneath each five-line staff. On the Treble Staff, the first space note below the first line is D. Below that is C, which has a Ledger Line through it.But that C below the Treble Staff is a very important note: It is Middle C.

How Reading Music Works

1. Up and Down

Musical notation is little bit like a graph with two axes. It shows us what goes up or down and it shows us when and for how long those notes should happen . So look at these two notes side by side. Which note do you think represents the higher note?

Of course, the higher-sounding note is represented by the higher-written note, so the answer is number 2! Lets try another question. This time we have 3 written notes. Which one note represents the lowest sounding do you think?

Of course, the lowest-sounding note is represented by the lowest-written symbol, so the answer is number 2! Simple , right? Now lets look at the notes from a different angle.

2. Moving Forward

All music moves forward as it unfolds in time so musical notation has a way of reflecting that too. This is part of the vast topic of rhythm and its all about when notes are played andfor how long. This will take some practice but even with a little bit of instruction you will be able to see it.

Below is a series of 7 written notes the notes are the same in that they dont go up or down. The difference is in how long they are played for. You see, that first note is the longest, the one note after it is shorter and the four after that are even shorter still:

Notice that the way I wrote the notes in the picture above is so that the longest note has the most space after it. That gap gets shorter for shorter notes because the next note is due in less time.

3. Other Nuances
