How To Produce Music At Home

What Is The Easiest Software To Make Music

How To Make A Song At Home

This is the 64 million dollar question! There are loads of music production software programs out there, so it can be hard to figure out which one is the best.

I guess you should look at several factors and then weigh up your options before making your decision.

Think about:

  • Have you had any experience on a DAW before?
  • Do any of your friends use a particular DAW?
  • When watching videos or reading reviews, did one DAW appeal to you more than another?
  • What is your budget?

The next step would be to go and download some demos to see how you get on. Most DAWs offer pretty lengthy trials, so you can really get hands-on.

You could also try booking a session at your local studio or music store, where they have different DAWs set up for you to test out.

Theres plenty of considerations that go into choosing the right software, but here are two important factors:

  • First, decide if its worth investing in an expensive program with lots of features like Pro Tools when you can start on something cheaper or even free like Audacity.
  • Second, make sure its compatible with your computers operating system.

Songwriting And Composition: Create A Song

Some songwriters produce. Some producers write songs. The boundary between artist and producer isnt always a bright line.

That means knowing the basics of songwriting and composition is important for modern producers.

The producer often has to make tough decisions when something isnt working. Is it the mix? Or the arrangement?

Is it the parts, or the tones? Or the effects? Is this song boring, or does it just have the wrong song structure?

These are the types of questions an experienced producer should be able to answer.

To help you develop these skills, we put together an exhaustive list of resources for producers looking to learn songwriting, arrangement and music theory in general.

How To Program Drums And Other Instruments

Setting Up Your Own DIY Home Music Production Studio

Most instruments are pretty simple to programme in a DAW. If you want to create beats, learning how to programme drums is an especially useful skill. Youll need to get hold of some samples to work with. As with beats, these can be purchased online, with many sites offering free databases. Dont overcomplicate things as a beginner. Stick to straightforward setups, with minimal effects until youve built up some expertise. A basic vocal track with a couple of instruments or a beat is an ideal starting point for the new music producer.

It can also be useful to get advice from fellow musicians if you want to learn how to start producing music at home. Find out how they went about their at-home production and get a first-hand view on what the process was like. See if you can share skills. It could be they have a particular talent at mixing and youre much better at editing. Or you might be able to share some of your equipment to cut costs. You never know, you may be collaborating with the next Mark Ronson in the making!

    Listen For The First Time

Alright, were finally going to get started!

First things first: you need to listen to your track.

Dont scoff. The first listen is an incredibly important step.

If you gave yourself enough time, its been a few days since youve heard your mix. Youre coming at it with fresh ears.

This will be the most honest you will be with yourself. Youll hear 80% of the problems in this first listen.

Make sure to keep a notepad by you, or open up a text doc on your computer. Take notes as you listen. These notes will become the basis of your moves while mastering.

Does the high end sound too brittle? Too dull?

Does the vocal stick out? Is it buried?

Does the track sound muddy? Does it sound too boring?

Write all this stuff down. You only get one first listen. Make it count!

What Do I Need To Record Music At Home

How to set up a home recording studio

All that history brings us to the present day, where DAWs have coupled with advances in computing power to make DIY music production accessible to just about anyone determined to make their own professional-sounding record at home.

But its not just software youll need. If youre looking to record music at home, heres a checklist of the things youll need to get started:

1.) Computer: If you own any computer made in the last few years, chances are it will work for music production. The key component youre looking for is RAM. Most DAWs require at least 8 gigabytes of RAM, which really isnt much for new-ish computers . Thats enough memory to process up to 25 audio tracks with multiple instruments and effects, which is more than enough for all but the most ambitious Brian Wilson disciples.

Youll also want a hard drive with at least 256 to 500 gigabytes of storage, which is also pretty standard for modern computers. The large space is to store your audio files, which will be uncompressed, so theyll take up a lot of room. Solid state hard drives are better than actual discs for writing and reading speed. SSD is much more affordable now than it was even a few years ago, so if youre in a market for a new computer for home recording you wont need to spend a ton for the added luxury.

    Exporting & Tracking Out Beats

Exporting is the process of saving your beat to your computer. All music programs will have an export option.

The most popular file formats are WAV and Mp3.

    • WAV This file format is high quality and usually uncompressed. The file size is much larger compared to mp3.
    • MP3 This file format is compressed, so the file size is much smaller and the quality is lower. This format is used more for streaming online.

The One And Only Thing You Need To Make Music

See all that? Realistically, you need about 1% of that to create. A digital audio workstation is really all you need, which is a software used for recording, editing, and producing music. You can actually download a free DAW to your computer or phone right now and have absolutely everything you need to start on your first track.

It really is as simple as that, yet people dont make the connection. Nobody wakes up thinking: You know, Id like to learn how all music works today. Its just not a tangible thought or idea people have or see as a real opportunity. It takes a certain kind of person to want to create their own sound. Those who want to but dont either psyche themselves out because they think they need $15,000 worth of equipment/software or they dont think theyll make anything good. People should really stop thinking.

    Learn About Music Theory

Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. It concerns itself with the methods and concepts composers use when creating music. Music theory is something that you can continue to learn throughout the entirety of your life, but thereâs some basic music theory thatâs going to help you write songs.

Most music that you hear on the radio is relatively simple from a music theory perspective, so unless youâre trying to create classical music or jazz within your DAW, you can get by with a relatively basic understanding of theory. This is excellent news because it doesnât actually take that long to learn basic music theory.

I recommend reading Music Theory for Computer Musicians by Michael Hewitt it walks you through music theory from the ground up. This book made it into the list of â7 Essential Books Every Music Producer Must Read.â

Check out the following video to learn all the fundamental music theory you need to know as a music producer within 30 minutes.

Key Discipline : Diversity & Further Experimentation

During stage 2, it can be tempting to pigeonhole yourself into one genre or style of music. This isnt necessarily a bad thing, but I do recommend you experiment with as many different genres as you can.

    Because youll learn quicker.

I started out making dubstep and picked up some valuable skills such as drum programming and sound design while doing so.

I then ventured over to drum & bass and developed my drum programming skills even further.

For a while, I made techno and house, which taught me a lot about the groove. Nowadays, I mostly make trance and progressive house, but the skills I gained from experimenting with other genres still come in handy.

So, if you feel like making genre X, then do so. Theres no reason why you shouldnt.

Key Discipline : Advanced Learning And Remaking

But its time to go even deeper. At this point, youre starting to further your strengths and bring up your weaknesses. Learning complex jazz music theory now is far more appropriate than in stage 2.

Advanced learning is all about going deep into topics. It helps to start with your strong points, because, at the end of the day, music production is too diverse a field to become a master in everything.

If youre into sound design, you might delve into the physics side of it, learning why certain waveforms sound the way they do. If you love mixing, you might decide to intern at a studio or read some textbooks on audio. You get the idea.

There comes a point where youve learned most of whats necessary from books and videos, and you need to go beyond the general advice and gather more nuanced ideas and tricks.

The best way to do this is to learn from other artists who are at or above your skill level. Given that everyone is unique and has unique thoughts, it follows that their music will be unique in one way or another.

How do you learn from other artists? You study their music. Better yet, you remake it. Remaking forces you to listen attentively. It forces you to try out new ideas and solve problems. It forces you to think about what youre hearing and how its made.
