You have to stream music from the Apple Watch to something in order to hear it at all, but Apple makes your choices confusing with mislabeled options and screens that do different things depending on you get to them. Here’s how to listen to non-Apple Music choices like Spotify and play them through speakers.
You can store music directly on your Apple Watch and then have the Watch stream that audio to other devices. With a few taps you can be playing your Watch’s music on AirPods and Bluetooth speakers but not the HomePod or any other AirPlay devices.
What’s probably happening is that using AirPlay would drain your Apple Watch’s battery so it simply isn’t allowed.
That’s disappointing but it’s understandable. What is far less understandable and hugely more aggravatingly confusing is that it’s as if Apple doesn’t want to admit that you can’t AirPlay from your Watch. So the button you press to send music from the Watch to another device has the AirPlay icon on it. When you tap it, your Watch shows you all the nearby speakers it can connect to and the list is headed with the word ‘AirPlay’.
Then just to make us sound like the kind of people who write complaint letters in green ink, if you are using AirPlay to send music from, say, your iPhone, then you can control it via your Apple Watch. Obviously.
Adding Music To Apple Watch
In order to listen to music on Apple Watch without an iPhone in range, you must sync a playlist to it first.

To remove all playlists from Apple Watch, select “None” at the bottom of the Playlist screen.

This could be holding the pairing button, as with Apple’s AirPods, although the Apple Watch should detect these regardless, or whatever method your manufacturer of choice has given to initiate pairing mode on its headphones.
2. Go to Bluetooth settings on your Apple Watch
Tap the settings gear app icon on your Apple Watch, and then tap the Bluetooth option to see the available devices.
3. Select your headphones and wait for them to pair

After years of workarounds and hassle, the Apple Watch Spotify app is now here. It’s by no means perfect, and features like offline playback and streaming over a cellular connection aren’t available, but you can still get the basics on your wrist by following the steps below.
1. Install the Apple Watch Spotify app
Working for both Spotify Free and Spotify Premium users, you’ll need to first make sure that you have the Spotify smartphone app installed and that you’re signed in.
