If You’re Using Zoom To Live Stream Your Classes Then Here’s How To Make The Sound Sound Great

Teaching classes online opens up a new world of possibilities and like training for face to face teaching, online teaching requires you to familiarise yourself with the tools too to get it right.

As an instructor, you want to provide the best class you can to your new online members while making the class feel as normal as possible as if they were there in the room with you. One of the best and easiest ways of doing this is by playing music while teaching.

It is important that you use this option to share sound correctly as it needs to be playing through the ‘meeting’ and not being played on any device to be picked up by your microphone. Doing the latter will interfere with your voice and cause poor sound quality.

Do you need a music license?

This is intended to be a guide on how to play music while teaching through the Zoom app, it is not advice on music licensing.

If you wish to play music during your sessions then please also ensure that you have paid the relevant music licensing fees, whether you are delivering your session in person or online.

You can read more about music licensing and purchase a license here.

    Using Music From Others

If you want to use a song for any reason, even if youre planning to use just a few notes to create a new song, we recommend that you obtain the appropriate rights from the owners or licensors of the song. That could mean contacting the music publisher, the music label, or the performer. One way to do that is through an organization such as LicenseMusicNow.com.

A public performance occurs when a song, recorded or live, is being broadcast via any media or played in a live performance to the public. If you want to broadcast or publicly perform music , you would need to obtain public performance rights for each applicable territory. In the United States, these rights are controlled by ASCAP , BMI or SESAC, also known as performance rights organizations or PROs. Radio stations and other businesses may have blanket licenses with each PRO, which requires them to pay a flat rate once a year for the rights to all music in a PROs catalog, which fee will vary based on the size of the audience, value of the advertising revenues, and amount and nature of music usage. However, individual licenses may be negotiated.

Technically, anyone performing music publicly must obtain a license for such rights, even marching bands, class instructors, street musicians, etc. Failing to obtain a license for the permission to publicly perform music could subject you to a claim for copyright infringement.

Dmca Strikes & Using Copyrighted Music

How to Play YouTube Music in Background Without Any Apps!

Twitch uses DMCA strikes to handle the process of punishing users for illicitly using copyrighted material. Each time Twitch detects an improper use of music, the specific section will be muted, the video may be suspended, and upon further violations, the account may be permanently banned.

    DMCA Strikes

Channels which commit DMCA violations will be notified of their infringement and subsequent punishment via email, or when logging in to the website or software. It’s a three strike system:

    • the first DMCA strike committed will result in a 24 hour ban to the Twitch channel
    • the second strike will leave an account banned from 1â7 days
    • the third strike results in the account being banned from Twitch forever.

These strikes stay on the account record permanently, so itâs best to avoid receiving them as much as possible.

    Content Claims

Twitch has a system to report copyright infringement if an artist believes their work is being used illegally. These copyright claims will be made by the original owner of the material, which could be the artist, their record label or management, or even a fan.

Twitch also scans videos with an algorithm to automatically detect and remove copyrighted material. Sections of videos containing unauthorised audio will be muted.

Sometimes the algorithm makes mistakes and incorrectly mutes videos. In this situation an appeal can be made to Twitch to reverse the strike. For full details on appealing copyright claims on Twitch, see this page.

Restrictions On The Use Of Music In Twitch

The first thing when choosing music for Twitch is to know what music you can use. There have been cases of players who, due to the use of copyrighted music in their streams, besides silencing their broadcasts, have received:

    • Third-Party Notifications
    • Important Notices of Regulatory Violations
    • DMCA copyright claims by a record label or musician

DMCA, stands for Digital Millennium Copyright Act, it is a law that penalizes any infringement of copyright.

It also penalizes the production and distribution of technologies that prevent compliance with copyright protection measures.

Therefore, in order to share music on this platform, it is necessary to obtain the rights of everything that is reproduced.

Many people mistakenly think that having bought music on CD or mp3 allows them to play it online for their followers. Similarly, there is a tendency to believe that subscriptions to platforms such as Spotify also allows the users to share their music on Twitch.

This purchase or subscription only grants the user a personal license. In other words, you can only access such music content to play it privately.

So, because of all the confusion surrounding this issue, you need to be clear about what music content you can use during your streams.
