How To Make Music Software

Choosing The Right Daw

How to Make a Mashup with MixPad | MixPad Multitrack Mixing Software Tutorial

Most producers and musicians spend too much time trying to decide which DAW to use.

This is time that could be used to make music.

Choosing a DAW doesnt have to be difficult, as long as you keep in mind the following:

  • You can make professional music in any popular DAW
  • It doesnt matter what other people use
  • Testing is better than reading

Because a DAW is the most important piece of music production software youll own, lets unpack these in detail, and then look at which DAWs might work for you.

What To Look For In A Eq

Equalizer plugins generally fall into one of two categories: analog-modeled or digital.

Analog-modeled equalizers are exactly what they sound like equalizers modeled after popular outboard gear. These plugins emulate the controls and capabilities of outboard equalizers, hoping to capture their analog warmth and character.

Digital EQs are focused on giving you enhanced control over the frequency response of a sound. These plugins are focused on high-quality processing, paired with an easy-to-use interface.

Cost

The price of an EQ can range from free to $300+.

Ease of Use

Functionality is key with all plugins, EQs especially. While analog-modeled EQs have a warm, smooth sound, theyre not as intuitive as some digital EQs.

Every plugin on this list is a great plugin, but not every single one will integrate well into your workflow.

Application

Since each EQ offers its own unique set of features, its important to ask yourself what you need in an EQ.

Do you need a precise digital EQ to help with sound design and creative processing, or do you want a warm, musical EQ to give your track more of an analog feel?

Choosing A Plugin Format:

At this stage, you should decide on the plugin format for the final product. It could be VST2, VST3, AAX, Audio Units, or all of the above. Factor the number of intended plugin formats into the development time plan.Once the design is finalized, a prototype should be programmed. This allows the developers to test the product and gather any feedback to inspire further direction. Depending on the scale of the project, the prototyping stage of creating vst plugins could last anywhere from a few hours to weeks or months.

To make a vst plugin, one needs to first create and compile the code, this will be done in an IDE . Once the plugin has been prototyped in the IDE, it can be built into a test version for internal review and feedback.Plugin manufacturers may turn to experts and industry professionals for private testing before releasing to the wider market.

The specifics of how-to depend on the style of the plugin being made. For instruments or sample-based vst plugins, additional recording and editing stages may be required.

For analog emulation plugins, the electrical flow of the hardware circuit must be measured , to create a convolution algorithm that digitally emulates the effect of the electrical process on a signal.

I Dont Have Money To Buy Music Equipment What Do I Do

If you have a computer you can start making music with free music software. You can even download free trials for paid software to start learning the programs.

I suggest you start saving up for a MIDI keyboard. You can get a USB MIDI keyboard for as low as $50.

FL Studio may be the cheapest paid music software option out. With a computer, MIDI keyboard, headphones, and music software, you are pretty much set with being able to make music.

    Setting Up For Recording

How to Make a Song in FL Studio 20 | Software Lesson

Whether you want to record live instruments with a microphone or make a beat using samples, its no harm learning the software basics.

After opening Audacity, the first thing you need to do is check the Device Toolbar and set up your audio host and projects input and output.

The Audio Host is the bridge between Audacity and the sound device youre going to be using. Depending on your operating system, your Audio Host can be changeable or not. According to the official Audacity Manual, the Audio Host works like this:

On Windows, you have three options:

    • MME: The most compatible and Audacity default
    • Windows Direct Sound: Potentially less latency
    • Windows WASAPI: Supports 24-bit recording devices

On Mac, the only option is Core Audio.

On Linux, there is generally only one option: ALSA, but other options could be OSS or Jack Audio Connection Kit .

Suppose youre using an audio interface to capture sounds, such as a Behringer, M-Audio, PreSonus, or Focusrite you need to choose it in the Recording Device section, located beside the microphone icon within the toolbar. Youll then select the number of channels in the device youre going to be using to record.

Finally, youll choose the output, found beside the headphone icon, which could be either a pair of earbuds connected to your computer or a set of monitors connected to your audio interface.

    • Set Latency Compensation to zero
    • Leave Buffer Length at its default value

The One And Only Thing You Need To Make Music

See all that? Realistically, you need about 1% of that to create. A digital audio workstation is really all you need, which is a software used for recording, editing, and producing music. You can actually download a free DAW to your computer or phone right now and have absolutely everything you need to start on your first track.

It really is as simple as that, yet people dont make the connection. Nobody wakes up thinking: You know, Id like to learn how all music works today. Its just not a tangible thought or idea people have or see as a real opportunity. It takes a certain kind of person to want to create their own sound. Those who want to but dont either psyche themselves out because they think they need $15,000 worth of equipment/software or they dont think theyll make anything good. People should really stop thinking.

Best Plugin: Celemony Melodyne Editor 5

    Beat Maker Software

    Melodyne Editor 5

When Melodyne launched its first edition, it was with a good amount of fanfare. After all, they promised a hyper-accurate level of pitch correction for audioincluding polyphonic isolation so that you could pitch correct every note in a chord. With their fifth iteration, Melodyne offers a few tiers, starting with the limited essential and assistant options. Neither of those gets you the polyphonic pitch editing capabilities , so weve opted to recommend the editor version. And youre going to be blown away.

They call that multi-note functionality Direct Note Access , and how it works is pretty cool: You take input audio, whether its a single vocal line or full-on guitar chords, and feed it into the software. Itll then map out each note onto a piano-roll-like interface so you can isolate pitches, smooth them out, or even drag them to another note. This award-winning pitch plugin will interface with almost every major DAW and will become an indispensable part of your production arsenal.

    Caelum Audio Tape Cassette 2

OS: Mac/WindowsPros: Easy-to-use cassette processing emulation, options for oversampling to reduce audio quality falloffCons: Not a lot of filtering optionsBest for: Recreating that analog warmth and wobble

Cassette tape emulation has had a moment for a few years now . Producers gravitate towards the warm sound of cassette tapes to give their instruments the feeling that theyve been lifted from samples or recorded on old hardware. You know the vintage vibe: A synth or sample with the top and bottom ends shaved off, with woozy pitch and grit, giving it a shot of instant nostalgia.

Tape Cassette 2 from Caelum Audio is a free way to tap into those same retro feelings. Its got a bevy of options saturation, noise, wow, flutter and even has the option to use an impulse response from a Tape I tape for that authentic cassette sound.

    Whats The Best Daw Software

No questions, beginners should use GarageBand starting out. Why?

  • GarageBand is the easiest, most intuitive to learn
  • GarageBand is the most accessible and affordable
  • For those two reasons, it makes the most sense to recommend GarageBand to starters. But dont get confused: GarageBand software is super powerful, completely capable of professional-level music.

When it comes to music production, its not so much about what is used, its more about the engineer and how well they know their program.

What Is Meant By A Digital Audio Workstation

A digital audio workstation is essentially the glue that sticks all of your creative sounds and ideas together. It is a piece of software that allows users to mix, master, edit and record audio files in any way they wish.

Adding effects, vocals, additional instruments, sounds and flavours to your songs can all be done through a DAW, until you have a final, complete product youre happy with. Most new and home studios focus on a digital set up, meaning DAWs are their primary music making tool.

What To Look For In A Delay

Most delay plugins feature multiple delay algorithms, giving you the tone and sound of several delays in one plugins.

Also, many feature creative post-processing effects such as phasing, chorusing, and pitch shifting.

The key is to find an interface thats easy to navigate and a tone that fits your sonic pallete.

    Cost

High quality delays range from $49 to $199

    Ease of Use

Almost more important than the sound of a plugin its the friendliness of its UI. Download a few demos and find a plugin that fits your workflow.

    Application

Similar to reverb, the image and space of your mix relies heavily on your use of delay.

Program Beats For Your Own Songs

As mentioned before, it’s best to program drum beats in the MIDI editor. This is easier and more accurate than recording sounds live. To test it out, use the acoustic drum set in “Vita LE”.

    • Insert a new, empty MIDI object from the “Edit” menu.
    • Here, you can choose from multiple presets. One bar length usually is enough to get started.
    • Select the preset “Empty ” from the “Edit” menu.
    • Drag the empty MIDI object to its own track.
    • Choose the desired synthesizer for this track. To do this, click on the icon in the left of the track header and select “Vita LE”.
    • Set the playback range above so that it is exactly over the MIDI object. This will play the entire length of the object as a loop.
    • Double-click on the empty MIDI object to open the MIDI editor.

This opens the MIDI editor. The MIDI Editor is a custom user interface for software instruments. This is where you program your beats, melodies and chords. On the Vita, you’ll find the kick drum on the left side of the piano keyboard in the “C1” row. The snare is two rows above that.

    • At the top, switch to the pencil tool.
    • Press the spacebar to preview your work.

The bar will loop, so you can listen to what you have drawn in an endless loop. Press the spacebar again to stop playback.

To get an idea of the sounds that the current synthesizer has to offer, simply drag one of the notes up and down. For every row in the table, the corresponding sample will be played. For example, the snare is two rows above the kick drum.
