What Are Ledger Lines

Ledger lines are the extra line that can be used to denote the higher pitched or lower pitched notes that cannot be placed on the five lines of the regular staff.

The illustration shows available notes on the staff.If we need to add higher or lower notes to the composition, we can simply keep adding the extra lines above or below the staff.

For example, you can see the note F on a treble clefs topmost line.

Let us place the note G, the next note in the series that may not need a ledger line.

However, to place the next note in the series just add one extra line to the treble clef.

As we move higher, the pitch of the notes increases gradually based on the pattern called chromatic scale.

Reading Meter And Time

1Learn about measure lines. On a piece of sheet music, you will see thin vertical lines crossing the staff at fairly regular intervals. These lines represent measures the space before the first line is the first measure, the space between the first and second lines is the second measure, and so on. Measure lines don’t affect how the music sounds, but they help the performer keep their place in the music.

As we’ll see below, another handy thing about measures is that each one gets the same number of beats. For example, if you find yourself tapping “1-2-3-4” along to a piece of music on the radio, you’ve probably subconsciously found the measure lines already.

2Learn about timing, or meter. Meter can be generally thought of as the “pulse” or the beat of music. You feel it instinctively when you listen to dance or pop music the “boom, tiss, boom, tiss” of a stereotypical dance track is a simple example of meter.

On a piece of sheet music, the beat is expressed by something that looks like a fraction written next to the first clef symbol. Like any fraction, there is a numerator, and a denominator. The numerator, written in the top two spaces of the staff, tells you how many beats there are in one measure. The denominator tells you the note value that receives one beat .

How To Read Rhythm

Each note has a rhythm value that determines its duration in a piece of music.

Rhythms are written using the shape of the note heads, stems and the beams between connected notes.

• A whole note lasts the entire bar. In common time that means its duration is four whole beats. Its written using a hollow note head with no stem.

• A sixteenth note lasts for one quarter of a beat. Its written with a solid note head and stem with two flags. When multiple sixteenth notes are connected with a beam.

Even further divisions are possible, but these are the main note values youll see as youre learning how to read music.

Understand The Parts Of The Sheet

The first step that you need to undertake is to understand the parts of a music sheet. If this is the first time you have seen a music sheet, there might be some symbols youre unfamiliar with.

One of the parts that you would notice first is the title of the piece and the author behind it. Its usually centered along the bottom edge of the top margin with the first letter names of each word capitalized. At times, there may be a subtitle printed in a smaller font with the author names below it.

The next parts youll see are the ledger lines. They refer to these as the staff . These lines are where you find the notes. All indicating the sound played on the instrument.

For the piano keyboard, the position of the note will tell the pianist which key to press.

Youll notice various symbols scattered all throughout the sheet. These symbols would denote the counting or which set of notes to use . Some of these will need further study to understand how they behave and how you will proceed with the piece.

Now, look at a music sheet. Youll see that there are two sets or groups of five horizontal lines. These are what you call the staffs.

Bar lines refer to those vertical lines. The horizontal lines that separate them are the measures.

The staff on the top is the Treble Clef. The notes youll find in here are higher than Middle C. The bottom, called the Bass Clef, is where youll find notes lower than Middle C.
