Creating A Platform Related To Your Genre Of Music

This is something I’ve talked about and helped people do in my other guides. So taking the above theory even further, why not create a website or podcast which you target at people who like your kind of music?

This can be a music review podcast, a radio show which showcases your genre, or even a website which generally covers everything in your music scene. Furthermore, it could even be something not 100% related to your genre that a lot of people in your genre also like.

So if you make music skateboarders often listen to, you may want to make a skateboarding site and play your music on the site and in the videos.

You’ll also want to include a shop page where people can buy your music, and possibly even start selling skateboarder related merchandise with your logo on it.

Doing these kinds of things will get you in front of people you wouldn’t have otherwise, and allow you to showcase your music to new people who are largely interested in your genre.

Connect With Fans And Other Artists

How Everyone can get their Music heard

Email Marketing Helps You Earn Gigs

A well-sized email list can get you booked for gigs more easily.

If you can show venues that you have a large number people you can send an email to about an event, they’re automatically convinced you’ll be able to draw a crowd – which means they’ll be able to sell more drinks.

If they think booking you will help sell more drinks, then having you play at their venue is much more of an interest to them.

We have a whole guide here about starting and growing an email list, but before you can grow your email list, you need an email marketing provider.

I recommend Aweber for this. Here’s why:

    • It’s only $20/month for up to 500 subscribers. That’s cheap. It’s like 2 Netflix subscriptions.
    • It has a clean, easy to use editor so you can create email campaigns quickly with little effort.
    • It allows for time zone based email delivery so you can send emails that are specific to gigs in a particular city.
    • You can add attachments to emails – which is great for giving away free downloads of your songs in exchange for an email address.
    • They have great automation tools. For example, if someone clicks the “tour dates” section on your website, you can automatically send them an email with a link to purchase tickets to a show in their area.

If you want to give Aweber a trial run, you can get it free for 30 days here. You can unsubscribe at any time if you don’t like it.

Set up and grow your email list. You won’t regret it.

Next start building your relationships with people who choose the music for movies, you never know where this might get you.

Next, start making a list of HUGE websites that could possibly do a write up on you or even use YOUR song as a Theme song to something going on the world today. They can write an article and you can recommend your song be the theme song for THAT.Go out there and make a list of TOP influencers or even people with just 100,000 followers and start commenting and trying to get them to notice you exist. Compliment them every time they post a photo THEN DM them in a few months.

Tell them you have a song you think they might like and youd even pay them to post about it. Tell them you just want a video of them jamming out to your song saying I like this song go check this guy out. This is more organic than a post on their page of your music video.

Entering Every Talent Competition Thinking That Is The Only Way They Can Get Anywhere

    OK, I admit:

Very few people know this but I tried out for The Voice. Part of me felt dirty but so many people were telling me I should, I figured I owed it to myself to give it a try.

Based on the experience and all of the conversations I had with people who have auditioned many times for many shows. It was like buying a lottery ticket. It was fun once but to do it again I think would be a waste of time.

To me, putting all your music career hopes into getting on these talent shows is the same as putting all of your financial hopes into the state lottery .

Keep trying if youd like but you are better off investing your time and resources in understanding who your ideal fan is and building your fan base one by one.

Besides, how many of the all time great wouldve won any of these competitions? Do you think Dylan or Springsteen wouldve had a fighting chance? Hard to say.

How To Promote Your Music Conclusion

So as you can see, this isn’t the average promote your music online with Facebook and Twitter’ guide.

I hope it’s shown you that there’s more to music marketing than the advice you hear thrown around on most other music advice sites, and I hope you now trust me enough to impart other wisdom on you in future.

So now you have two options:

  • Put into practice what you’ve just learned above.
  • Buying Spotify Followers And Plays

How To GET YOUR MUSIC HEARD

No doubt you will have seen a variety of promotion services out there offering organic Spotify promotion designed to boost your Spotify plays and increase your Spotify followers.

Buying Spotify followers and plays is such a grey area and youll find so much conflicting advice out there, published over the last few years a lot of it coming from the promotion service companies themselves.

Spotify is a system, and like most systems where there are benefits to be had, people will try and hack it.

Its easy to see the appeal also. If you buy Spotify followers it can seem like a quick way to boost your profile and make you seem more attractive to labels and partners.

Its a negative area of an industry that focuses so much on image and perception and for a lot of artists they feel like they need these stats before anyone will take them seriously.

However its not without its downsides. Time and time again we see instances of people buying plays and getting a quick initial boost and increased monthly listeners, only for these to drop back to zero a few weeks later.

Its quite clear that these arent real plays or real followers.

Services like this actually harm Spotify, so it shouldnt come as a surprise that they will be actively targeted by them.

Does this mean none of these services help? Not necessarily, there are likely some services out there which are run in a way which can actually make this work, but the decent ones are not likely to come cheap or be freely available.

Are There Other Companies That Can Help Me Get My Music Placed

There is a huge list of sites not mentioned here, for example Mubert, a company that utilizes AI when creating its music.

When it comes right down to it, you can even find opportunities on sites like ReverbNation and Sonicbids.

I think what company you work with is at least partially going to depend on what stage you are in your career.

If youre an established songwriter or composer and have access to quality production, you might set your sights on the companies that have carefully curated catalogs.

Meanwhile, if you arent established and have limited access to quality production, you might rely more on sites like YouLicense and others already mentioned.

As youve already guessed, whether to enter an exclusive contract is another point worth considering before you jump into a deal.

Working with companies that actively help you find opportunities is ideal.

Of course, you might be required to build yourself up to the point where you can work with a company who cares that much about your music.

So, if youre just getting started, youll need to do all the legwork, which will be a mix of developing industry relationships and hunting for opportunities youre well suited for.

Thats another important point to consider, since you may not play every genre of music. You need to go after opportunities where your music fits, always.

So, do your research, make great music, submit to relevant opportunities and keep upgrading your skills.

    Submit Music To Pandora

There is an approval process but if you get approved, it could be a big deal because you get royalties.

It used to be a pain in the butt. I know because submitted before and I got turned down.

BUT when I was putting together this post, I remembered I never sent in my newest release. It was WAY freakin easier.
