How To Get Djs To Play Your Music

Treat The Dj Like A Human Being

How to get a DJ to play your music

The number one reason DJs will not play a song request is because the person was disrespectful. We get that you may have a favorite song , but there is no excuse to ever be rude to anyone working at the venue for your benefit. This applies to bartenders, servers, bottle girls, photographers, and anyone else at work for you to enjoy the evening. After so many people requesting songs as if they own you, DJs can get hardened. So be different and stick out by waiting for the DJ to signal you that it’s okay to come up and talk to him and try something like:

“I really dig the music you have been playing and am having a great time. If you get a chance tonight, my friends and I would love to hear anything from 50 Cent. Thank you so much!”

Not only will I try to play 50 Cent if it fits the format, you respected my space, my time, dignity and gave room for discretion as a performing artist. You were kind and I will be sure to fit in my exclusive G-Unit routine just for you.

What Is The Creative Commons Licence

The Creative Commons licence is a kind of copyright that lets creators keep their rights to and ownership of the work, while at the same time allowing others to copy, distribute, and use that work for free. When applying for a Creative Commons licence, the music producer chooses whether or not the song can be used commercially, and whether or not the song can be used in a derivative manner .

So while a song bearing the Creative Commons licence can be downloaded for free, you may or may not use it for commercial applications such as a mixtape that you sell or a song that you produce and upload to streaming and online stores.

Whats the difference between Creative Commons and royalty free?

Creative Commons means that the creator of the music still retains ownership of it, and so there are limitations attached to how the music is used or manipulated. A royalty free licence means that you can use the music without having to pay a royalty or licence fee each time you use it, and you can make derivative works of it and use in commercial settings too. There still are a few limitations though: for example, for some royalty free sample packs you cant sell the sounds and pass them off as your own creation.

Request Your Song Early Or Late In The Night

DJs play for their crowd. So at the beginning or end of an open format set you and your friends may represent a larger percentage of the crowd when compared to peak attendance. E.g. if the club or bar event starts at 10pm, it is not going to get packed until closer to midnight. As such, the DJ usually plays feel good tracks to warm up the vibe for those who arrived early. Towards the end of the night the crowd will naturally thin out and those left are trying to find someone to take home. Again, your request will have more weight when you represent more of the crowd. An extreme example would be if you and your friends were the only group of people at the bar or club – perhaps no one else is there yet. In this scenario there is a better chance that the DJ will entertain your requests. Conversely, you should understand that when the venue is at-capacity, the DJ will be fully engaged in the mix and should not entertain any requests since they will serve as a distraction to the focus requires to work a live crowd.

Spinfire: Club Marketing For Artists And Djs

  • Price: Free
  • Website:

Spinfires model is simple. Offer a platform for a DJ to earn money by playing tracks. Artists pay to have tracks played. DJ plays the tracks at some point in their set and send video proof to the artist. DJs can charge anywhere from $20 USD to $500 USD for plays. DJs set a fair price depending on the DJs popularity, venue size, day of the week, etc. All a DJ needs to start accepting requests is a bank account. After signing up, DJs can start posting events and artists can start browsing the listings. There is a small percentage taken out by Spinfire for a platform usage fee and it is not clear on their website what percentage is taken out.

Artists from all over the world can request DJs to play their songs. If an artist is dropping a new single in a foreign market, the artist can browse events in that area. Once a DJ receives a request, DJs must play that track within the time of their event. DJs have 12 hours after the event to submit video-proof through the app in order to receive payment. Artists can also give reviews for DJs who always play tracks out or for DJs who dont honor play requests. DJs can accept 10 requests per hour of their event.

How To Get Djs To Play Your Music In 5 Easy Steps

DJs can provide immense exposure for your music. A good remix of your track, put out by a popular DJ can transform your music career.

Below are 5 easy steps to get your music played by DJs:

1. Send a personalized email

DJs receive plenty of emails on a daily basis. Send them a personalized email to stand out from the crowd. Include a punchy email subject line to attract their attention. Be specific in your message as to why you want them to play your music. DJs value exclusives. No one will take your music seriously if you send out a random email blast.

2. Send in tracks that fit well with the DJs style

Before you send out music, research the DJs music style. DJs receive enough music in the genre they usually play. They wouldnt particularly be interested in including music that doesnt blend well with their sets. It is wise to analyze each DJs vibe and determine if your music can fit into their style. Send in your music only to those DJs, whose music you can connect with.

3. Provide a brief introduction about yourself and the track

Include a short artist bio and some information about the track. A brief background information provides DJs with an insight into your music. You can even mention how you admire a particular DJs work to make the email more personal. End the email by providing relevant contact details. Include links to your website and all your social media accounts. Craft a short, yet informative email to get the DJs attention.

5. Follow up with the DJs

How Many Songs Are Usually Played At A Wedding

The number of songs played at a wedding depends on the duration of the reception. Expect to prepare about 150 songs if the event will last for three hours.

To ensure that youll have enough songs, you can always prepare a lengthier playlist. More so, plan how your songs will play since not every part of the wedding will require music.

How Did Music Downloads Start

Where DJs get music! How to build your music library!

Music downloads are so common these days that we take for granted the fact that they didnt exist a little over 20 years ago. Music downloading became a thing in the late 90s thanks to the advent of the MP3 file format. MP3 compresses audio files to make them smaller and faster to download over the internet, which was important then because internet speeds were crawling: 56kbps compared to todays 12mbps standard .

When this happened, another internet technology was gaining traction: peer-to-peer file sharing. This enabled anyone to download files from other computers that are connected to the same peer-to-peer file sharing network online. Napster was the first one to create a P2P network just for music files, and it became so big that it was shut down a few years later thanks in no small part to million dollar lawsuits from record companies and major label acts like Metallica.

Even if Napster was shuttered, the spread of MP3s could not be stopped: the technology that enabled music to be shared had been adopted by other P2P networks, and it became commonplace to download MP3s illegally. This, together with the rapid adoption of MP3 music players and CD burners, was how music piracy became a thing, and was the death knell of the traditional music industry.

What If Youre Playing Abroad

There are different PROs in every country and, it depends how strictly they enforce their authority. Again, you should ensure that your venue is compliant with the copyright laws by asking them about this.

The venue/organizing authorities are going to be responsible for this, and you probably dont need to worry about it.

Record Shops & Markets

To become a popular musician, you need have more than just talent and some good tracks. You need an marketing plan so that the world has a chance to hear your music. The plan should involve a strong social media presence and reaching out to DJs, A& Rs, and Bloggers.

DJs play music on radio stations or streaming channels. A& Rs scout for new musicians and broker contract with recording studios. Bloggers write about and share music to their readers. All these are important parts of building a public profile and developing a fanbase.

There are free music submission sites, but you may not get anywhere with them. You need to know who to approach and how to do it in a way that will maximize your chances of getting your music out there. You may not get great results if you blindly submit to DJ pools.

This article will take a look at how to increase your chances of getting your submissions noticed.

What That Email Does:

How To Write A Promo Email

Compliments the DJ on his work and the personalization shows youre not just sending mass spam emails to people. This email was specifically created for him.

Adds social proof. If other people at these clubs like it, then maybe the people at the DJs club might like it. If you dont have social proof yet, get some before sending this email. You dont want to look like a lazy rappers that expects a hand-out.

SPECIFICALLY ask for what you want. Youre not asking for feedback. Feedback is too general. Thats too much work and could be anything. But asking someone to let you know if you should push a song or not, is simple and easy.

The Soundcloud link makes it easy for them to stream your song. Dont send your song as an attachment. They dont trust you or your link. It could be a virus for all they know. So, keep it simple and send a link to stream your song.

Gives the DJ more ways to contact you. They may just reply to your email , but some may want to contact you on social media or talk over the phone.

What If The Venue Hasnt Paid Royalties To Pros

If the venue youre playing at doesnt have license from PROs, you have a clear choice- either dont play or get your own licenses. Keep in mind that you might end up spending over $5,000 for licenses from all 3 major PROs. So definitely not the recommended path.

Until sometime ago, the authority of PROs over music being played in restaurants or clubs wasnt enforced, and hence it wasnt a big issue. However, since they started to regulate even small cafes and bars heavily, a lot of small business owners have started to feel the pinch.

This is why a lot of the small places readily tend to take the risk of lawsuit rather than pay the license fee. Logic being that no PRO is going to waste their time and money to collect the revenue from a small business owner- which is negligible benefit for them.

Larger the establishment youre playing at though, the more probable that theyre compliant with the PROs- because they cannot afford to be non-compliant and risk legal action.

Record Shops & Record Label Markets

Yes Ive added it in here. Im not going to be all digital. There are record shops still out there and also one my favourites, although far and few between, record label markets.

If youve still got a soft spot for new music on the wax, then record shops and label markets are a great way to get stuck in. Discovering music this way can be highly expensive and time consuming, but a very therapeutic process.

There may be some limited edition tracks in the crates that youve dug through that may not even exist in the realm of the internet. You will certainly have the edge in your DJ sets if you find some hidden lost gems.

A favourite record label market is the Independent Record Label Market that features a lot of markets around Europe. Ive spent many a time in the one in London, and have spent a shed load of cash too on a lot of old and new tracks I love.

Find The Magazines + Influencers Who Are Looking For You

Not only is it important to super-target the people you want to share your music with, but you should also find the best music magazines and publicists out there. Sending out a mass email to every press email you can find will not work.

What if you wish your music to be heard by more people in your niche? Start contributing to various music publications that appeal to you. Research small blogs even and build up your own list of contacts. Say I was impressed by the quality of the interviews and posts on your blog. Id love to ask for a favor, can we mention my new EP in a future interview?

When you are a big artist, youll get plenty of requests that you wont even be able to fulfill. But when you are a great producer with cool music and you need to build up your brand even more, be personal and reach out to people who interest you directly. This will almost always be more effective than a mass message.

Do Not Add Me To The Huge Cc List On Your Email

Its not very nice to get an email that has been sent to 200 other people. Its not very personal. Its even worse, when everyone else who got the email can also see all the email addresses. Please write to me directly. A little care and attention goes a long way. I dont really care for the BCC field either, since I know youre just blasting this email to more people than you can write to at once.
