Why Is Apple Ending Itunes

Buying and Downloading Music on iTunes

Apple said that iTunes was initially focused on burning and mixing songs on the Mac, but then suggested it was too big and bloated, and lost its purpose. “How about calendar in iTunes?” Apple engineering lead Craig Federighi joked during the presentation. “I mean, you can have all of your appointments and your best tracks all in one app!”

Apple describes Apple Music as being extremely fast, which suggests that iTunes performance had gotten laggy.

Apple Music Vs Spotify: Comparing The Top Music Streaming Services

Here’s how to choose between the biggest names in music streaming based on price, catalog, features and more.

Apple Music and Spotify are the two biggest names in music streaming. They have the same monthly subscription fee so it can be tricky to know which one best suits your needs. Do you want lossless and spatial audio support? Apple Music is the one. Love podcasts and want a smart music player for your car? Spotify is your jam.

Part of the choice also comes down to how you listen. If you’re enjoying music at home smart speaker support is key, but music discovery and stream quality can be as important for keen music lovers. This comparison is updated periodically with new information.

Music Discovery Tools Excel On Spotify And Apple Music

Beats1 Radio.

One of the top reasons to use a streaming service is to discover new music. Both Spotify and Apple Music expose you to new tunes based on what you already like.

Spotify has tailored playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar that are automatically populated each week with new songs. Apple Music has similar playlists, including New Music Mix.

When you first sign up for each service, both ask you for your favorite genres and artists to get a baseline reading. Once you start listening more, each gets a clearer picture of your likes and dislikes to help tailor recommendations even further.

Spotify and Apple Music also have radio stations based around your favorite artists, tracks or genres. Apple Music also has a separate station called Beats1 Radio which is curated and hosted by actual DJs, so you can listen to it in real time like you would a traditional radio station.

In our experience, Spotify’s algorithmic recommendations for new music based on our listening habits is the most on-point. But Apple Music’s human-curated radio station often uncovers new or unreleased tracks that also appeal.

How To Enable The Itunes Store In The Macos Music App

Apple pushes its Music subscription service heavily, to the extent of killing off iTunes in macOS with the release of macOS 10.15 Catalina in 2019, and replacing it with several apps, including one simply called Music.

But if you subscribe to Apple Music, you might find you cant purchase music, only listen to it. Apple has retained the name iTunes just for purchases, as in the iTunes Store, and disables showing results from it by default when an Apple Music subscription is active.

    Its easy to fix:

  • Open the Music app.
  • Choose Music > Preferences and select General.
  • Select the iTunes Store checkbox.
  • Click OK.
  • IDG

The Music app shows results without the iTunes Store , unless you check a box in preferences. Then you have the option to see purchaseable results, too .

Now you can search for music that may be in your library, Apple Music, and iTunes Store, or only in one of those three, and purchase it.

    • Use the Search field in the upper-left corner and click the iTunes Store tab
    • When viewing an album or song, click the button at the right of its listing or overlaid on the album art and select Show in iTunes Store.

What Spotify Has That Apple Music Doesnt And I Wish It Did

Music is what brings people together and I dont know how Apple couldnt create a way to make Apple Music feel more personalized and at the same time shareable. I know we can set up a profile, add friends, and also see what theyre listening to, but its not enough.

First, Apple needs to make these features more powerful. On the Listen Now page, you can see what your friends listen to, but you dont know when they did it. An hour ago? Last week? Now? This is one of Spotifys feature that attracts me the most.

Id like to know what my friends are listening to at that moment and what theyre discovering. It helps to engage in a conversation, find similar tastes, or just get to know a new artist.

Another thing that I would love to have is the ability to edit a playlist with someone else. Prepare a party playlist with my friends, share a playlist with my girlfriend with songs that remind us of each other, and so on.

Finally, Apple Music should also add a private mode. I know I just said that I would love to share what I listen to and see what my friends are discovering, but it would be awesome if sometimes I could just listen to the sounds of rain or other content, and not have it count on my reproductions.

How Do You Navigate Apple Music

Once you download the Apple Music app and sign up, you will go through a music-tailoring process, which will ask you to select music genres you like and dislike, followed by artists you like and dislike. After you’ve moved through the simple process, you’ll find yourself on the For You screen.

There is a menu bar at the bottom of the screen for navigation and to which section of Apple Music you are in. There are five screen tabs in the menu bar:

Listen Now: A curated selection of music you should enjoy. It’s based on what you said you like, your listening habits, and the music you own. The first time you launch Apple Music, you’ll be able to specify what genres and artists you like. From that point, you’ll see the screen loaded with suggestions like genre-specific playlists, albums, guest playlists made by artists, etc. Recently Played also appears here, as well as playlists based on other playlists you’ve already listened to.

Browse: An editorially-curated selection of music from across the service. This section also highlights hot playlists, tracks and albums, top songs, new releases, etc. You can view these new curations by genre too. You’ll also find Artist Interviews, Daily Top 100 lists, City Charts and Music By Mood, among others.
