How To Add Music To Streaming Services

Music Catalog Sizes Compared

How to Add a Streaming Music Service to Sonos

The number of songs offered by a music service used to be one of the main differentiators, but most now have between 50 million and 70 million songs or more. However, depending on your favored genre, some of them have a more robust catalog that include many under-the-radar, indie or hip-hop artists. If you’re musically inclined, constantly on the hunt for your favorite new band, a streaming service like Spotify or Tidal may be more up your alley. Users who are less ambitious about expanding their musical taste will be satisfied with the smaller catalogs Amazon Music Unlimited or Pandora offer. Apple Music is somewhere in the middle, offering a healthy mix of mainstream tunes and underground unknowns.

How Did We Choose These Music Services

Our selections for this guide are based on market research and hands-on personal experience. For our selections, we included only services that are subscription-based, with a full selection of albums and singles from major record labels, with the ability to stream music on multiple platforms, without ads. The ability to save music for offline playback on mobile devices is also a must-have factor.

Using those criteria, we chose not to include a few services that were a less than perfect fit. That list includes SiriusXM, which is more of a radio network than a music service, and 7Digital and eMusic, which focus more on selling music than streaming.

Are You Allowed To Play Music On Twitch

Twitch and music. It can be summarized in one word confusing. The majority of streamers that play music in their streams do so with little regard for copyright law. However, Twitch recently issued several DMCA takedowns and effectively prevented streamers from using the platform if they continue playing music they dont have the rights to.

Its not uncommon to find streamers playing todays top hits or yesterdays classics. Streamers sometimes also take song requests, giving their audience control of the music. In the past, the music industry hasnt taken action but thats changing. Just last year, many popular streamers were hit with 24-hour bans on the platform for playing copyrighted music. So what are the rules? The punishments? And what can you do to protect yourself?

What were seeing right now, not only on Twitch but on most streaming platforms, is an increased eagerness to respect copyright laws. People realize that creators intellectual property needs to be prioritized, for obvious reasons. However, listening to your moral compass does not mean you cant or shouldnt play music in your streams. You are allowed to play music on Twitch as long as you follow the rules. Lets get into it.

How To Choose A Music Service

The big three music services Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music Unlimited each offer about 75 million songs that can be played on multiple devices.

Really, you cant go wrong between any of the big ones, Alper says.

Other services include Deezer, iHeartRadio, LiveXLive , Pandora, Sirius XM, SoundCloud, Tidal, TuneIn Radio and YouTube Music with many acting more like traditional radio stations but with curated playlists. Like the big three many leverage artificial intelligence to sense what kind of music you like and suggest more of the same.

there are a few considerations when choosing one over another, such as if there is a free ad-supported version or not, and what extras do they provide, Alper says.

For example, Alper says he likes that Apple Music shows song lyrics when the music is playing. But Spotify offers something called Canvas, animated video backgrounds to certain albums, along with a robust podcast collection as part of your subscription. Spotifys music quality is good, Alper says but notes Apple Music has added “lossless” audio for even better sound, if thats important to you.

How Do You Navigate Apple Music

Once you download the Apple Music app and sign up, you will go through a music-tailoring process, which will ask you to select music genres you like and dislike, followed by artists you like and dislike. After you’ve moved through the simple process, you’ll find yourself on the For You screen.

There is a menu bar at the bottom of the screen for navigation and to which section of Apple Music you are in. There are five screen tabs in the menu bar:

Listen Now: A curated selection of music you should enjoy. It’s based on what you said you like, your listening habits, and the music you own. The first time you launch Apple Music, you’ll be able to specify what genres and artists you like. From that point, you’ll see the screen loaded with suggestions like genre-specific playlists, albums, guest playlists made by artists, etc. Recently Played also appears here, as well as playlists based on other playlists you’ve already listened to.

Browse: An editorially-curated selection of music from across the service. This section also highlights hot playlists, tracks and albums, top songs, new releases, etc. You can view these new curations by genre too. You’ll also find Artist Interviews, Daily Top 100 lists, City Charts and Music By Mood, among others.

Armed with your MP3s and promotion/bio materials, follow the next steps to research what stations fit your music.

1. Research internet radio stations and determine which ones match your music

At this stage, youll be researching two things. First, youll want to find stations in your genre and style of music that will likely add your music to their regular playlists. Second, youll want to find stations that have shows that may feature your music or interview you. To do this, use aggregator sites like Filtermusic and Streamfinder, or platforms like Live365, SHOUTcast, or Radionomy to search for artists that sound like you.

Each station will have a format, or playlist of music, that it plays in rotation. Add any that fit your music in your spreadsheet under a column titled Rotation. One way to do this is to find artists similar to you and find out which stations may be playing them. While researching, add a column called submission rules so you can keep track of what youll need to submit and what webpage to use. Typically, these stations have websites that outline their submission instructions.

2. Research internet radio shows that match your music

3. Submit your music to your targeted station and show list

Once youve done your research and completed your target list and spreadsheet, its time to start submitting. Be sure to follow their instructions, since not providing something or bypassing their process could get you ignored.

4. Keep tabs of the submissions

How To Add A Streamer To Your Hi

It feels as though weve now accepted streaming and welcomed it into the hi-fi community. Fears were real, and often founded, that it would replace physical media to detrimental effect, offering up inferior performance in return for perceived convenience.

In many ways, though, streaming has helped us fall in love all over again with those cumbersome old discs. Being able to throw music from your palm to your speakers can be wonderful, but our desire to savour an albums cover artwork and actually hold it has far from been quelled.

That speaks for vinyl more than CD, of course, with the latters sales dropping dramatically over recent years. But that doesnt have to make for wholly miserable reading: more likely it is the rise and ubiquity of CD-quality streaming, not to mention the ever-increasing range of hi-res options, that mean you dont actually need the silver disc any more for comparable sound. Then again, how and why cassette tapes have risen again in popularity were still struggling to fathom.

So yes, you can have it all. Thats why this piece is titled How to add a streamer to your existing hi-fi system, and not How to replace it or How to get the best price for your CD player on eBay.

Theres a short answer, of course, which would be to read some of our music streamer reviews around your budget, make a choice and plug in. But, as ever, there are more important things than money when it comes to getting the best sound and feature set for you.

One recent change is that high-quality files, once a rarity, are now becoming fairly commonplace. This provides a great example of how competition is good for consumers. After Spotify announced that higher-quality streaming was on the way, Apple revealed that its entire library would be available in lossless high fidelity a few months later. The next day, Amazon made its hi-fi streaming service a free benefit of its basic tier.

Thats good news for audiophiles, though regular streaming quality will probably satisfy most listeners.

As we mentioned above, you are not allowed to play music that you do not have the rights to play. Play music without a license and youre violating copyright law. Twitchs Terms of Service and Community Guidelines explicitly say: You may not include music you dont own in your Twitch streams or VODs.

Currently, many Twitch streamers unintentionally violate the law because they want to give their audience the best experience possible. Unfortunately, including copyrighted music without proper licensing can result in takedowns and it denies musicians the funding they deserve. With an Epidemic Sound subscription, both problems are solved.
