How To Add Music To Groove Music

Small Features To Enhance Your Experience

How To add Music to Groove Music in Windows 10

This is a Windows 10 universal app, so that means that it works across all devices. One thing you can do with this on a desktop is resize it to any size you want. You will see that since it is universal, it will automatically resize for you. So it does not matter the size of the screen, this app will just work.

You can also change the color of the theme. I chose black as my background, but you can also have a light background. At this time though, it will not sync to the mobile experience, so you are stuck with the dark theme there. That was what I was mentioning where the mobile app is behind the other device versions.

You can also manage the devices that this will work on, import iTunes playlists with a click of a button, automatically download songs added to Groove music Pass, add album multimedia that can be missing, and more.

How To Make Windows 10 Groove Music Work The Way You Want

Craig Anderton on Nov 14, 2018, 8:00 AM

If you bought a Creation Station lately, then it has Windows 10 installed and part of the operating system is the Groove Music player. Although originally designed for Microsofts ill-fated streaming service, its actually a very capable music player with one glaring flaw: theres no real documentation, so the net is filled with threads like Groove Music not updating library, dont know how to update Groove Music in Windows 10,cant figure out how to reset Groove Music, how to fix Unknown Album problem, how to add custom artwork, and the like the list goes on.

I too ran into these problems, so I checked out other music players and, unfortunately, found them lacking. iTunes doesnt recognize nearly as many formats, and the other free players I tried were either more complicated than I wanted, or too simple. So, being stubborn, I kept experimenting with Groove Music until I found out that not only can it behave well, but its really quite cool. So whether you want music on your desktop while you work or a USB stick to load in your cars audio system, hopefully the following will serve as the missing documentation on how to make Groove Music a productive member of your computer-based society .

How To Rescue Your Music From Microsoft Groove

Before Microsoft pulls the plug on its streaming service, make sure to download any songs and albums you purchased.

Let’s have a moment of silence for Groove, the music service that Microsoft just announced will go silent at the end of 2017.

Now let’s get practical. If you purchased any songs or albums from Groove, you’ll want to download them before Microsoft pulls the plug. You’ve got plenty of time, obviously, but you might as well get the job done sooner than later.

Just to clarify, we’re not talking about songs you’ve streamed from Groove’s sizable library, but rather music you bought outright via the Windows Store. That’s yours to keep, and it’ll arrive on your PC in DRM-free MP3 format.

Speaking of your PC, that’s where the process begins:

Step 1: Open the Groove app.

Step 2: Click My Music to access your personal library, then click Songs.

Step 3: Click Filter and choose Purchased.

Step 4: Mouse over any song in the list, then click the checkbox that appears alongside it.

Step 5: In the menu that appears at the bottom, click Select All, then click after it appears in that same menu.

Depending on how much music you have, this may take some time. By default, Windows will dump everything into the folder C:\Users\\Music\Purchases.

In the meantime, let us know if you run into any issues retrieving your purchases from Groove — and where you think you’ll hang your music hat now that the service is disappearing.

Why You Should Not Choose It

Going off the reasons listed to why you should choose it, I can make the same argument about why you dont need it. If you dont have a Windows 10 device, you probably dont need to use Groove. If you have an iPhone, Mac, apple tv, and more, you can get away with iTunes since it is all part of the same login and experience. Same goes with Amazon users and Google users.

How to add Music to Groove App on Windows 10

When Xbox One moved over to Windows 10, things like universal windows apps started to become a reality. One of those applications was Groove. While this was always on the Xbox, the music would shut off when you would move away from the app. The only way to play music was to snap the music to the side and have less real estate to play your game next to it. Now with the updates, you can go into this music service at anytime and play whatever you want. Then you can hop right back into your game and continue to play with the music in the background.

If you dont have the app anymore on Xbox, here is a guide on how to install it on Xbox. This guide will also breakdown all the controls on the Xbox controller to control your music.

    Adding Your Personal Collection

Chances are if youre considering Groove as you WMP replacement, then you might already have a sizable music collection on your computer. In that case, you can build your collection from your local music files by adding watch folders.

To do this, we look under the heading Music on this PC and click the link to Choose where we look for music.

You must have at least one watch folder, but you can presumably add as many as you want. Groove should then crawl through your folder and add your music to its library.

Note, you can also import Apple iTunes playlists.

Chances are, if youre a serious music collector, then Groove isnt going to cut it. It is pretty limited and doesnt support alternative music formats such as .flac and .ogg, but for those with simple needs, its a serviceable replacement for WMP.

We should note, however, WMP is still alive and well and can be accessed from the Start menu so you can still use it. That said, if you are a serious music collector chances are youre used to using something else to manage and play your tunes.

How To Add And Organize Music On Windows 10 Using The Groove Music App

Matt Klein has nearly two decades of technical writing experience. He’s covered Windows, Android, macOS, Microsoft Office, and everything in between. He’s even written a book, The How-To Geek Guide to Windows 8. Read more…

For as long we can remember, the go-to music app on Windows has been Windows Media Player . Sadly, WMP hasnt been updated since Windows 7, which doesnt mean it doesnt work, but its not exactly the latest nor greatest app for playing your MP3s.

In Windows 10, theres a new music app called Groove Music and if youve used any type of music-oriented application recently, then Groove should be pretty self-explanatory, but lets take a few minutes and walk you through some of its more notable features.

Groove lets you view you music collection by album, artist, and song. Additionally, you can click the search icon and find anything in your collection in mere seconds.

When you play a song, the controls will appear along the bottom edge. Here you see the album cover art, song, artist, and the playback controls you come to expect from a music player.

Additionally, just as in Windows 8, if you use your keyboards media controls, a small control window will appear in the upper-left corner allowing you to go back, forward, and pause, as well as adjust the volume.

If you click the gear icon next to your name, it will open the settings, which will discuss in the next section.

    Create Groove Music Playlists

Groove Music is Microsoft’s answer to iTunes and comes included with Windows 10. It offers a way for you to build and access your music collection, and, as with any good music player, it allows you to create playlists using your library of tracks.

Playlists are the digital equivalent of cassette ‘mix tapes’, and allow you to get creative with your music selection. And in this tutorial, we show you how easy it is to get to grips with them.

Even if you haven’t used Groove Music before, its standard controls should be fairly familiar. When you click on a song to play it, you’ll see its details appear along the bottom edge of the Groove window. The album cover art is displayed, along with song and artist info, a progress bar and standard playback controls.

How to Change and Edit Groove Music Artist Images

We’ve just about covered everything you need to know about getting your music into Groove, but what about actually finding something to play? The three main tabs are “Albums,” “Artists” and “Songs.”

Albums are shown as squares, artists as circles and songs as one giant list.

There are a couple of ways to deal with your music once it’s playing. The bar along the bottom of the window keeps your timeline scrubber and play controls at hand. But, if you hover your mouse over the Groove icon in the taskbar you get mini controls for play and pause, skip back and skip forward.

Oh, and if you fancy going full screen, there’s that option, too. You’ll get a background of artist-related images, some text and not a lot else. To access this, tap on the “now playing” segment on the bottom left-hand side of the media control bar, then hit the full-screen icon on the artist title bar.

    Use Onedrive With Groove Music

Another option you have is to upload your music collection to OneDrive and play it with Groove Music.

The neat thing about using OneDrive is you don’t need to have a Music Pass subscription. And, because the Groove Music app is available on iOS and Android, while on the go.

If you have a vast collection of music that’s been accumulating over the years, it’s nice to be able to add it to Groove Music. Personally, I’ve been happy with paying the $10 a month for streaming, but there are always albums that aren’t available. Or, sometimes I want to listen to a higher quality FLAC version of an album.

I should also mention that, just like with using OneDrive, you don’t need a Music Pass subscription to add your music collections from other drives.
