Customize The Music With The Audio Tools Playback Tab
By default, the Audio Style is automatically set to No Style.
You can select Play in Background. Play in Background makes the audio file start automatically during a slide show and also play across multiple slides.
There are three ways to start the playback.
- Automatically: The music starts automatically when the slide appears.
- When Clicked On: The music only plays when you click on the audio icon. For this to work, uncheck the Hide During Show option to reveal the icon in the presentation view.
- In Click Sequence: The music plays when triggered with other effects youve configured on the slide .
The other choices like Volume, Play Across Slides, Loop until Stopped, and Rewind After Playing are all self-explanatory.
What Is The Preferable Audio File For The Powerpoint
MP3 files are usually recommended. Using an audio file with a small file size is a common and convenient way to insert music into your PowerPoint presentation. MP3 files, Waveform Audio Files and MIDI files are examples of audio versions PowerPoint supports, but the MP3 format is small and helps keep the size of the PowerPoint document small. It also helps ensure convenient and quick file sharing. You can convert other file types to an MP3 with free online converters.

Set Your Preferred Option
There are two basic options available to control when your music starts. You can either set the song to play when you click the button or set it to play automatically in the background. The two presets for selecting your preferred option are:
Play in the background
You can set the song to start playing automatically in the background across all the slides by selecting the “Play in Background” option in the “Playback” tab. This setting makes the song start automatically, loop when finished, continue playing even when you change slides, and hide the sound button. The music starts playing after you open the slide.
Choose No Style
The second option allows you to start the music or sound by clicking the audio button. To select this, click on the “No Style” option so the song plays when you click the audio button. It’s possible to change the look of the button using the “Format” tab. This function allows you to import a picture or design to use instead.

You Cannot Embed Online Audio In Powerpoint Like You Do With Youtube Videos
Unfortunately, PowerPoint does not support embedding audio files stored on online platforms, so embedding audio from web services such as SoundCloud is not possible. However, as an alternative option, you can embed videos from popular services such as YouTube. If you want to know how to do that, check this previous article that we published a while ago: How to embed videos into your PowerPoint presentations.

How To Add Music To Powerpoint
In this article youll learn how to add music to PowerPoint, and the different playback and looping options that are available to you.
There are two main things to note about adding music to PowerPoint:
1. Adding music to your presentation is slightly different than adding narration directly from within PowerPoint.
If you are trying to add pre-recorded narration files to your presentation, I recommend instead using the Record Audio or Record Slideshow features to narrate a PowerPoint.
Thats because the built-in narration tools make lining up your voice narration with your slides a lot easier. To learn all about how to narrate a PowerPoint using these tools, read our guide here.
2. Adding music to PowerPoint will increase the size of your PowerPoint presentation, as you can see in the picture below.
Because the MP3 music files are embedded directly into your PowerPoint presentation, the size of your presentation will increase by the size of the MP3 music file you add.
For example, if you add a 17MB song to your presentation, the size of your presentation will increase by 17MB. If you add two music files to your slides, it will increase even further.
Embedding lots of audio files can make sharing your presentation difficult. To learn different ways you can compress PowerPoint to reduce your file size, read our guide here.
Why We Cant Add Audio To Powerpoint
Before you insert music in PPT, you should know which audio format is supported by PowerPoint. As for PowerPoint 2007 and 2010, .aiff, .au, .mid or .midi, .mp3, .wav and .wma are supported. For PowerPoint 2013 and 2016, all of the above plus MP4 audio are supported.
Moreover, if your music format is not listed above, you can use an audio conversion program for music formats conversion. For my part, Ive been using HD Video Converter Factory Pro for a long time. I often use it to converts MIDI to mp3, convert my music formats and increase my audio volume.
It provides conversion of audio/video formats and HD video edit. Thus, I never worry about how to put music in PowerPoint because of unsupported formats. Nevertheless, what impressed me most is that there arent any annoying ads in it.

How To Delete An Audio File That Is Embedded In A Powerpoint Presentation
You might change your mind and no longer want to use a certain audio file that you embedded in a PowerPoint presentation. In that case, click or tap on its speaker icon and then press the Delete key on your keyboard. PowerPoint removes the audio file in an instant.
Unfortunately, there is no Delete option in the right-click menu. The only way to delete an audio file from a PowerPoint presentation using your mouse is to right-click on it and select the Cut option from the contextual menu.
Insert Music Or Audio File
PowerPoint will allow you to insert audio files that are saved as MP3 or WAV format. When adding audio files, take note of file size. Large audio files can make your presentation large and slow it down.
Add audio from the Insert menu. Navigate to the Audio button and click it for three options:
- Audio browser: This brings up audio files on your computer to choose from in a new window. This option will show all audio files and even allow you to preview them. It will show all file types, even those that are not supported by PowerPoint. Songs in iTunes, for example, must be converted to MP3 or WAV format before they can be added to a slide.
- Audio from file: Lets you select an audio file from your computer. You can directly insert any file that is the appropriate format.
- Record audio: If you are planning to use your own voice for the audio or want to record a short music clip
Once you have found an audio clip you want to use, select Insert. An audio icon will appear on the slide. Youll also notice a Playback tab has appeared in the toolbar to make adjustments to the audio file.

Play The Perfect Audio For Your Presentation
You can add different sound effects to different slides. Start with a cool background intro music, or add a tiny sound effect to one slide, or just record your own commentary.
You can consider using songs or an instrumental score to your slides when you want to convert PowerPoint into a video.
But do remember that these media shouldnt overpower the content of your presentation. Every rule of effective presentations says that its important to know what to leave out as well as what music to add into your PowerPoint slides.

Can You Add Multiple Songs To A Powerpoint Presentation
There are different ways to add multiple pieces of music on PowerPoint. You can space out the music files in your presentation, so another song plays immediately after a song ends. This is possible when you select different slides and songs. Follow the steps in the previous section to add them to their individual slides. You can avoid silence and jarring interruptions by combining all the selected audio files into a single track that you play from the beginning. There are tools that allow you to stitch these songs into one.
When using this type of tool, you can put the audio files in the same folder and view them together. Then you can add each track to the end of the first song. After adding the songs, you can edit your file by removing extra silence. After editing your file, save it and insert it into your presentation.

Sometimes the ideal song for a situation is attached to a video. While you cant currently just play the audio and you probably dont want the video as part of your presentation, theres a workaround to get that tune in your show.

Step 2: Go to the Insert tab and choose the drop-down arrow for Video on the right side of the ribbon.
Step 3: Pick This Device, Stock Videos, or Online Videos and follow the prompts to insert the video.
Step 4: When the video appears on the slide, drag a corner or edge to make it smaller and then drag it off of the slide to one of the sides.
