Apple Music VS iTunes: Why Apple Music Survives?

Hows the music quality? Apple Music streams songs at 256kbps, which is the same rate as iTunes Match. Thats a bit of a drop from Spotify, which uses a 320kbps bitrate. Select Apple Music tracks and albums are available with Apple Music Lossless at no extra charge. But the big advantage of Apple Music is the newer Spatial Audio feature for select music. Its not available for most of the 90-million song catalog, but it makes a big difference for those tracks where it is available.

Does Apple Music work with Apples HomePod? It sure does, but you need an Apple Music subscription to control your music via Siri.

Does Apple Music link with Sonos? Yes! If you have Sonos speakers set up in your home, getting started with Apple Music streaming is easy. Just open the Sonos app and choose add music services. Select Apple Music and log in.

Can I save music to listen to offline? Yep! Apple Music lets you save tracks to listen to offlineyou can save as many songs as youd like, as long as your device has space for them.

But remember: You wont own those files and you wont be able to offload them anywhere else. You cant burn them onto a disc, use them in separate video projects, or put them on other devices that arent linked to your Apple Music account. If you decide to cancel your Apple Music subscription, youll lose access to those songs.

How To Start Listening To Music On Apple Music

We think that by now, you know whether you want to become a premium subscriber of Apple Music or not. If you want to join the Apple Music club, keep on reading. We will tell you step by step how to start listening to music on Apple Music.

Start with choosing the best subscription type for you. We have them described before, but you can always learn more about the individual, student, and family plan on the official Apple Music webpage.

Even if you can change your subscription plan later, its important to choose the right plan at the beginning, so you dont have to waste your money and time later on changing the settings.

Should You Buy Apple Music Voice Plan

Having access to 90 million songs for $60 a year is the single greatest feature I can think of. This Apple Music Voice plan is perfect for casual listeners. It provides a simple way to constantly access all music without having to scour the internet or steal it.

As long as Siri can fulfill its side of the bargain and deliver people the music they ask for, this music tier will be a game-changer. If Siri falls down and can’t understand people or doesn’t play the right songs a lot of the time, then it’s hard to see people sticking around, no matter what the cost per month is.

I’m optimistic that this Apple Music Voice plan is a positive for music listeners and potential ones, but it will be asking a lot of Siri to pull it off.

Starting a subscription for the new Apple Music Voice plan can be done by saying, “Hey Siri, start Apple Music Voice” when it launches in the fall. There is a seven-day trial available at launch to see if this Siri-powered option is a good fit. Subscribing to the voice plan can be done on any Apple device that supports Siri.

So, what about the Music app? Subscribers to the Apple Music Voice plan can still use the Music app, but it will be transformed. The Browse tab along the bottom will be gone. For example, people will see suggestions for listening to playlists, albums, artists and radio stations.

There will still be a Search tab in the app to have some kind of a window into the selection of songs. The app can be used for some service management but generally no tapping to activate music.

Spatial Audio With Dolby Atmos

Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos provides an immersive, multi-dimensional audio experience that allows artists to mix music in a way that makes it sound like the notes are coming from all around you. Apple previously had a Spatial Audio feature available for television content, and now it has also expanded to Apple Music audio content.

Apple Music automatically plays Dolby Atmos tracks on all AirPods and Beats headphones with an H1 or W1 chip, as do the built-in speakers of the newest iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Support for Spatial Audio is also available in the Apple Music app for Android.

Apple plans to add new Dolby Atmos tracks on a regular basis, offers up a curated selection of Dolby Atmos playlists. At launch, there were thousands of Spatial Audio songs available across a wide range of genres. Apple is working with Dolby to make it easy for musicians, producers, and mix engineers to create songs in Dolby Atmos.

How Apple Music Voice Works

Apple Music Voice works entirely through Siri: You don’t select songs or playlists by tapping them, but instead by asking Siri to play music.

Quick tip:To use Siri on an iPhone or iPad without a Home button, hold down the Lock or Home button until Siri appears. If your device has a Home button, hold that down. On a Mac, hold down the Command and Spacebar keys, or click the Siri icon in your menu bar.

Alternatively, if it’s enabled, just say “Hey, Siri.”

So for example, if you want to listen to Britney Spears, you’ll tell Siri: “Play Britney Spears on Apple Music.”

Or if you want to listen to a specific track, like “Toxic,” you’ll ask for it directly: “Play ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears.” Once the song is over, you’ll hear similar recommended songs.

You can also give Siri some more freeform requests, like:

  • “Siri, play relaxing music.”
  • “Siri, play rock music from the 70s.”
  • “Siri, what’s the title of this song?”

This means that a lot of the music you’ll be listening to is picked automatically. You can personalize the random music selection by telling Siri that you like or don’t like the song currently playing.

You can’t freely choose songs or artists to play through the app you can only use Siri. You use Siri to control the songs, too. If you want to pause, skip, or rewind a track, you have to ask Siri to do it for you.

Apple Music: Audio Quality

  • Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio has now arrived
  • Current streams capped at 256kbps
  • Crisp and clear sound

Apple Music streams music at a 256kbps AAC bitrate. It streams at the highest quality by default and reduces it if youre streaming on the move. Tracks sometimes take a few seconds to play, but theyre crisp and clear especially if youre listening with a pair of the best noise-cancelling headphones.

However, all music streaming services are upping their game to bring subscribers better music quality or at least the option to try it. Deezer and Tidal already offer hi-res audio. Spotify is launching its HiFi service later in 2021, and Amazon Music HD offers CD-quality listening with better quality soon to follow.

When we first wrote this review, Apple had only recently announced that Apple Music would get Spatial Audio and the ability to listen to over 75 million tracks in Lossless Audio. Now those features are finally here and we’ve written a guide to get you started: how to turn on Apple Music Spatial Audio and Lossless.

Although many streaming services are following suit with better quality audio, Apple Music does now sound significantly better than some of its competition and it hasn’t charged you any extra for the uplift in quality.
