Music Can Be Distracting Behind The Wheel

While most of the effects of music on the brain are good, there are a few that are detrimental, as well. The most noticeable place you might notice this is when youre behind the wheel of a car.

At least one study has indicated that listening to music while driving might distract you, and not simply because youre fiddling with the radio dial. Some types of music, such as classical, cause the driver to become too relaxed to focus effectively. Others like heavy metal tended to make the driver more erratic and aggressive.

Interestingly, the study also found that the best music for driving, if youre going to listen to any, is pop music.

Can Music Really Affect Our Behaviour

Yes. Take, for instance, the background music thats often played in shops and restaurants. This can have a surprisingly powerful influence on how we behave.

Working in the 1980s, US marketing professor Ronald Milliman discovered that slow, relaxing music in a restaurant actually makes you eat more slowly and increases the amount you spend on drinks during the meal.

The tempo of the music also has an effect on how quickly you walk around a shop or supermarket you tend to browse and buy more if the music is calming and relaxed.

Surprisingly, the choice of background music can even influence which items you buy. One test, carried out by psychologists at the University of Leicester in 1999, involved changing the background music near a display of German and French wines in a supermarket.

The German wine sold twice as fast if stereotypically German music was playing. However, when French accordion music was being piped out, the French wine was five times more popular than the German.

Other research in this area has shown that the correct choice of background music can increase the income of a shop or restaurant by 10 per cent a surprisingly large effect for something that many of us barely notice. Another indication of the power of background music is something known as the Manilow method.

In 2006, Sydneys city council was trying to work out how to disperse the groups of teenagers who were hanging out in the shopping malls.

Music Reduces Stress In Heart Disease Patients

Having heart disease can be stressful enough on its own. Maybe even more so if a patients condition is more advanced, which may require more complex treatment options. Open heart surgery, for example, certainly isnt nothing to mess around with, and it should be expected that having to undergo a process like that can elevate ones anxiety.

Music has an overall calming effect that can affect several key factors related to coronary issues. Listening to the songs you love may lower your blood pressure, decrease your heart rate, and bring an overall sense of calmness.

Stress, in particular, has been shown to be a major component in some heart related issues. Any way that it can be reduced should be added as part of a patients treatment plan. And what better way to do that than to jam out to your favorite tunes?

This is widely believed by parents and educators to be a big mistake.

Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist Albert Einstein was an accomplished violinist with a lifelong passion for music.

He believed that the theory of relativity occurred to him by intuition, and that music was the driving force.

So, by depriving students of music lessons, we might be depriving the world of its next great scientific genius!

Part of your brainpower will be taken up processing the music, leaving less capacity for the work youre trying to do. Music with lyrics is particularly distracting.

The situation is a little different if youre performing a simple task such as ironing or washing up.

In this case, youll have plenty of spare mental capacity available, and the music will help keep you in a good mood and prevent you from getting bored, probably improving your performance on the task in hand.

Music Helps With Facial Interpretation

Some studies have found that music plays a substantial role in our perceptions of others, especially in our initial reactions to faces. In other words, when we hear music that we interpret as happy, we are quicker to see similar expressions in others. The same goes for feelings of sadness or negativity.

Though it might not surprise you that music can play a vital role in our emotions, you might not know how much. Researchers found that music can change these perceptions in as little as 15 seconds.

Music Can Improve Your Reasoning And Motor Skilldevelopment

When motionsare paired with songs, it allows children to improve the coordination of theirfine motor skills.

Did you makefinger motions while singing the Itsy-Bitsy Spider while growing up?

Did you countall of the monkeys that were jumping on the bed with your fingers?

These actionshelped to practice control of the hand and fingers. The rhythms of the song, combined with your physical actions that correspond to the music, help thebrain to transfer memories of that moment to your long-term storage centers.

Dancingprovides the same benefit when you are listening to music, even if the songsare playing as a thought in your mind.

Children wholearn songs by dancing experience higher levels of arm and leg control.

It also teacheschildren how to define their boundaries for comfort.

Learning how to play a musical instrument creates improvements in these skills as well.

Music Can Aid With Hormonal Imbalances

3 Ways Music Improves Brain Function

Music especially certain types of music can even help hormonal imbalances. One study indicated that music improved hormone levels in people with certain genetic disorders such as Williams Syndrome.

The study also concluded that it could help correct other hormonal imbalances, like those associated with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. Though music alone isnt a perfect cure for any of these diagnoses, researchers continue to investigate how music therapy could play an important role in treating them.

Classical Music Can Improve Visual Attention

Its not just kids that can benefit from musical training or exposure. Stroke patients in one small study showed improved visual attention while listening to classical music.

The study also tried white noise and silence to compare the results, and found that, like the driving study mentioned earlier, silence resulted in the worst scores.

Because this study was so small, the conclusions need to be explored further for validation, but I find it really interesting how music and noise can affect our other senses and abilitiesin this case, vision.

Live Example: Binaural Beat

Even if you understood everything above, nothing beats a live example! Put on some headphones and play the video below. Youll hear a pulsating sound.

Now, to prove that a binaural beat is a combination of two waves played into two ears, try this:

Take your headphone off of one ear and only listen to the other ear . Instead of a pulsating sound youll hear a single tone. Now try it with your other ear. You should hear another single tone, but if you listen very carefully itll be very slightly higher or lower pitched than the other ears tone you just listened to.Once youve tested both ears, you can clearly hear how listening to these two frequencies at the same time produces a third pulsating tone – this is a binaural beat. This pulsating tone is called a Theta Brainwave, and is the combination of hearing one frequency in your left ear and one frequency in your right ear. The difference of the left and right ear frequencies need to be in the 4-8 Hz range for it to be classified as a Theta.

There are also Beta, Alpha, Delta, and Gamma brainwave states that occur at different frequencies.

Note that all of the benefits in the image above are generalized.

Dont expect every one of those frequency ranges to match each benefit exactly.

Music Improves Personal Productivity Levels

Another greatway in which music is able to influence us and affect our bodies, and one whichwe touched upon previously, is the fact that music can help to increase andimprove productivity in certain circumstances and tasks.

Music and brainresearch conducted over the years has found that music stimulates human brainreceptors, which communicate with other parts of the body, and can help toimprove productivity in a number of different ways.

Studies havealso found that listening to your favorite music will help stimulate adrenalinesecretion, and other hormones, which will increase your mental focus, as wellas physical energy levels too.

Lets look atworking out in the gym as an example. When we hear our favorite song, played ata high volume, our brains will recognize this, and stimulate the adrenalglands.

The createdadrenalin from gland stimulation provides more thought clarity, increasedenergy, and improved focus so that your productivity levels can risedramatically.

This outcomecan make your workouts become more effective, if you are feeling tired orlethargic after a challenging session. It can also function as a naturalpick-me-up after a long day at work.

Some people will feel stronger once their adrenalin kicks in after listening to some music. It gives you an opportunity to lose yourself in the melodies while you work, making the experience more enjoyable.

Music Can Predict Your Personality

How music affects your brain

Simply put, the type of music that you prefer to listen to may be a big predictor of what your personality traits are. Some of these correlations can be very surprising as well. For example, who would have ever thought that a metal head may tend to be gentle and creative?

Other relationships between music types and personality may be a bit more obvious. People that enjoy classical music may be classed as more intellectual, or smart. Of course, these alignments arent necessarily cold hard facts that are absolutes for everyone, but they may be more accurate than you may think.

How Music Affects Learning

Many schools had music programs in the past that were thrilling to be part of. When I was a kid I didnt play any of the instruments but I loved watching and listening to them.

Sadly, today only a few are still there.

It was said that they were incurring too many costs with barely any benefits.

But truth is, these programs helped make peoples lives a whole lot easier when it came to class.

If you didnt know, music helps ignite in children a form of intelligence related to space. This is often called spatial intelligence, it makes the understanding of the mechanism of things, how things should ideally work best known to them.

And if you followed these children who have played musical instruments in class, you would see their super performance in units like mathematics, languages and logical thinking and reading.

That is why you are going to find many musicians writing great inspirational works that influence millions of people all over the world.

The whole idea of music programs came from Mozart Effect.

If you are not familiar with it, it was music made in the early 90s by Mozart claiming that it helped give babies enough ammunition to get their brains up and running and to make them even more brilliant in academics and life as a whole.

The idea was very serious that parents used to have their babies listen to the effect even when in the womb before they were brought in the world.

Music Can Make You More Creative

Many people enjoy listening to music while they work, study, write or pursue hobbies. If you feel like your creativity is stimulated by music, youre not alone. When looking for answers to the question of how does music affect the brain, it should come as no surprise that music also encourages creativity.

Certain studies have confirmed that music that makes you feel strong emotions can make you more productive and creative. Firstly, it promotes hormones that reduce stress and make you happier, which makes it easier to focus!

But more importantly, music improves divergent thinking, which is a lofty way of saying that it helps you think out of the box and come up with original ideas.
