We sat down with music expert Dr. Ibrahim Baltagi to find out how music helps to develop a young childs brain and where lullabies come from.

Classical Music Helps You Sleep

Classical music may be an easy, inexpensive remedy for restless snoozers. One study published in the journal Critical Care in 2015 found that classical music, combined with earplugs and eye masks, induced sleep in patients recovering from cardiac surgery, while an earlier study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing in 2008 found that students with sleep disorders slept better when they fell asleep to classical music. Why does classical music work better than other types of music? While it can still be beneficial to the brain, popular music, music with words, and music with upbeat tempos can require your brain to multitask, and as the brain actively responds to the music, it may be difficult to fully focus on sleep or any other task, says Jackson. Most classical music has a slow tempo and is soothing, making it great to prepare your brain and body for sleep. Try music that has a regular rhythm, low pitches, and tranquil melodies. If you still wake up exhausted after a full nights sleep, it may be a sign that youre not sleeping deeply enough.

Choose The Right Music For Yourself It Works Only When You Enjoy It

Everything listed above should make it clear that listening to classical music is beneficial. But does it necessarily have to be classical music or even just Mozarts music? Will listening to Brahms or Tchaikovsky or even rock music create the same effect?

The answer, to some degree, is yes. In general, music acts as a stimulant on the brain. According to Inc., listening to music causes your brain to build a path between your memory and emotional center, keeping your brain active. But the distinguishing factor is not any particular form of music, but what kind of music you like. If you find classical music boring, it is not going to be much of a stimulant.

There are some unique qualities of classical music which do make it more effective all other things being equal, but that principle can also apply to 15-minute manifestation or some other similar technique. Classical music is more musically complex compared to rock or pop songs, which means that the stimulant effect is greater as your brain processes these songs. It also is a better relaxant, which is an underrated aspects of how music can help improve learning. Rather than directly boosting your brains power, classical music can create a more soothing environment which is more conducive to thinking.

Classical Music Makes You More Emotional

One study published in PLOS ONE in 2016 found that opera can produce a thoughtful, empathetic response in people, while an earlier study from 2001 found that people who listened to classical music were more willing to share personal information about themselves in writing. Catherine Jackson, a licensed clinical psychologist and board-certified neurotherapist based in Chicago, has noticed a similar effect during neurotherapy sessions when she plays light or classical music while patients engage in deep breathing. Some patients who typically have a hard time sharing or discussing emotional content are better able to open up and share, she says, adding that music may help relax people enough to open up about painful issues.

Dancing also provides an indirect way in which music leads to better brain health. In scientific studies, dancers themselves report multiple cognitive benefits of their activity. Moreover, an astonishing study in 2003 at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine showed that of many different types of physical activities, only dancing was associated with a reduced risk of dementia. Another study, this time in Germany, gave us a clue as to how: dancing was associated with increased hippocampal volume and with the production of a brain protein, BDNF, which stimulates the growth of new brain cells.

Healing Power Of Music

These changes in brain circuitry and connectivity suggest opportunities to activate certain regions to promote healing, Silbersweig says. He and Haddad look forward to using cutting-edge brain research to build on whats already known about the therapeutic power of music for patients with dementia, depression, and other neurological conditions. The pair note, for instance, that playing a march or other rhythmic piece for people with Parkinsons disease stimulates the brain circuits that get them physically moving. Similarly, people with short-term memory loss from Alzheimers disease often recognize familiar songs like Happy Birthday because that memorys encoded into their brains long-term memory, Haddad notes.

Haddad witnessed this response during high school and college while performing for patients in hospitals and assisted living facilities. You have these patients who are essentially sedated, lying down, eyes closed, not able to communicate, she recalls. And when you play a song that they recognize from their youth, their eyes light up. Theyre sitting up, and theyre smiling. Its just incredible.

Does Classical Music Make Babies Smarter

At some point in their lives, most parents, expectant parents, grandparents, and others have pondered the Mozart effect, which holds that exposing babies to classical music, even in utero, boosts their IQ and other aspects of their cognitive development.

But is there any truth to the Mozart effect? Its primary scientific support comes from a 1993 study showing that classical music temporarily improved college students scores on two parts of a general intelligence test. Subsequent studies have found classical music improved preschoolers performance on paper folding and cutting tasks. But the kids did just as well after theyd heard stories or listened to childrens music. Whats more, their performance depended on how much they liked the music or stories, which led to the counter theory that enjoyment arousal is what truly affects performance, not classical music per se.

A new research trend focuses on the effects of studying music so far, results suggest that, in fact, music study can boost kids IQ more than simply listening to it.

For now, at least, this much seems clear: Its probably beneficial to do things with babies that engage them and make them feel happily arousedand if they seem to enjoy classical music, put on your tutu and dance!

The Mozart Effect could be completely non-existent, according to a new neuro-scientific study in America.

In a new study by Nicholas Spitzer at the University of California, it has been suggested that listening to classical music has no effect on the brains capacity to learn and be active. This goes against the popular idea of The Mozart Effect, which suggests that listening to classical music can increase brain activity of developing babies and adults alike. Spitzer told The Economist: Let me dispel a brain development myth. Many people think classical music is going to enhance brain function or playing particular games sharpens ones cognitive function. These theories have been looked at in detail and they dont stand up.He added: It is disappointing in a way, but what we have learned is that exercise is the key thing for brain function. However, Spitzer did agree that learning to play a musical instrument can improve cognitive functions in the brain: That has clear cognitive functions that do crossover. Especially learning to play and read the music at the same time.Spitzer is a part of the BRAIN Initiative, a White House-backed research project that aims to advance brain-mapping technology.

Music Moves Brain To Pay Attention Stanford Study Finds

STANFORD, Calif. – Using brain images of people listening to short symphonies by an obscure 18th-century composer, a research team from the Stanford University School of Medicine has gained valuable insight into how the brain sorts out the chaotic world around it.

The research team showed that music engages the areas of the brain involved with paying attention, making predictions and updating the event in memory. Peak brain activity occurred during a short period of silence between musical movements – when seemingly nothing was happening.

Beyond understanding the process of listening to music, their work has far-reaching implications for how human brains sort out events in general. Their findings are published in the Aug. 2 issue of Neuron.

This 20-second clip of a subject’s fMRI illustrates how cognitive activity increases in anticipation of the transition points between movements.

The researchers caught glimpses of the brain in action using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, which gives a dynamic image showing which parts of the brain are working during a given activity. The goal of the study was to look at how the brain sorts out events, but the research also revealed that musical techniques used by composers 200 years ago help the brain organize incoming information.

This state of mind is what scientists associate with activities that involve our imagination, memory and intuition, including our eureka moments.
