How Much Do Music Streaming Services Pay Artists In 2021

Ever wondered how many streams it takes for an artist to make money? Read on to find out this years pay rates for artists on popular streaming plattforms.

A guest post by of AmplifyYou.

We all live in a city called the attention economy. Digital service providers, a.k.a. music streaming service, thrive on the attention economy. While they enable artists to reach global audiences without touring or direct advertising, these platforms often make headlines for their payouts.

But how do their payouts work? And how can artists get the most out of DSPs?

    The Basics

Platforms such as Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer dont have a fixed pay-per-stream rate. Instead, there are a variety of different payouts systems . The rate depends on variables such as:

    • The listeners country/territory
    • Distributor/label negotiated rate
    • Pricing/Currency/Inflation in each territory

When taking all of these factors into consideration, we can conclude that all streams are equal, but some are more equal than others. That being said, artists need to take other elements into consideration, instead of cutting DSPs out completely.

Streaming is one of the most popular ways to listen to music today. A stream is completed when a song is played through an online platform, rather than on an individual listening device.

Streaming has grown in popularity as it does not require users to download the media they want to enjoy, which saves storage space on computers and mobile devices. Streaming is also popular in video services like YouTube and Netflix.

How Much Streaming Income Do Record Labels Make

Today, record labels make a fixed percentage of streaming royalties for the artists work that they produce and market. For major labels, artists typically only receive about 16% of the royalty payments from streaming services.

Furthermore, smaller, indie labels usually split the net income from every penny earned per stream 50/50. For self-releasing artists, every penny earned goes right into your pocket. With that said, an association with a record label generally leads to higher exposure and better quality recordings from a professional music publisher.

What Does Apple Music For Artists Offer

Apple Music For Artists provides a lot more data to musicians compared to a regular Apple Music account. Artists can easily access the dashboard to see song plays, radio spins and purchases.

Every time one of your subscribers starts a song from their playlist or library and listens for 30 seconds or more, it is counted as a play. A radio spin is counted if someone listens to your track for 30 seconds plus on an Apple Music radio station.

Their in-house team curate official apple music playlists, which are extremely hard to get your track included on.

Any time a customer buys your release from the iTunes store, you will see it counted in purchases.

How much does Apple Music pay per stream?

With the innovation of music streaming platforms, music discovery has become easy. As a result, many budding artists who previously experienced difficulty finding an audience are now being approached by them without batting an eye. Though artists have expressed their gratitude towards this, they have also pointed out the excruciatingly low-priced pay per stream benefits. No viable solutions have been provided by leading platforms like Apple Music or Spotify yet. Until then, fans of the artists are advised to make themselves aware of the pay per stream system so that they can come to the aid of the artists from time to time. How much does Apple music pay per stream and how can fans help with it? Let’s find out.

    Apple Music Takes Third Place

How much does Apple Music pay per stream? Historically, Apple Music has paid artists much better than its streaming music rival, Spotify.

Back 2017, the service paid $0.0064 per stream. By last year, that number had risen to $0.00783. Now, Apple Music has upped its rate further: in April of 2021, the platform announced that its artists would receive a royalty rate of 1 cent per stream.

Artists on Apple Music would need around 147,200 plays to earn the US monthly minimum wage amount.

With Apple closely guarding its user metrics, it remains unclear how much Apple Music loses each year on the service as well as per user.

How Do Streaming Platforms Pay Artists

Streaming platforms pay artists royalties for songs that are streamed or downloaded. In most cases, the money is directly deposited into an artists bank account every month or quarter.

Although it is becoming increasingly rare, some royalties are still paid with a physical check that is mailed to artists. More often than not, low-income checks from low volume streams are more of a novelty for smaller musicians rather than a serious paycheck.

    Pps Below The Announced $001

Apple Music has recently mentioned in an announcement that their PPS is at $0.01. However, this number only takes standard subscriptions into account, and not any of the cheaper ones, e.g., family subscriptions. They also add up the payouts for the master and publishing rights, while our assessment is solely focused on the payout for the copyright owners, which will then be forwarded to the artists via the distributor.

Even though Apple Music clearly pays more per stream than the majority of their competitors, they are still pretty far away from those $0.01.

On average across all countries, Apple Music pays $0.00599265 per stream. As mentioned above, this number only accounts for the master rights, which make up 52% of the generated revenues. If we add the 14.7% that are paid out for the publishing rights, we would thus get $0,0077.

Based on our calculations, it is only the top 23 countries that, when combining master and publishing rights, receive $0.01 or more per stream. For the US, Canada, Germany, or France, for instance, this is not the case.

Apple Music Reveals How Much It Pays Artists Per Stream

How much do artists make while you rock out to their songs? Apple revealed the answer.

The rise of streaming has changed the music industry. Instead of record labels and artists making larger sums of money when people buy their new album, they make pennies when people stream a song.

The argument comes down to whether streaming actually works out better for the music industry in the long run. It’s obviously better for consumers, but if labels and artists aren’t making any money, there won’t be an industry to create music.

More often than not, we don’t actually hear about how much services like Apple Music and Spotify pay artists. It’s like some big secret happening around us. We know our plays are paying the artists and labels, but how much is a mystery.

Apple has revealed a bit about how much it pays artists in a letter discovered by The Wall Street Journal.

    What Is Apple Music Radio

How Much Apple Music Paid Me? (Independent Artist)

Earlier in this article we mentioned that iTunes Radio was merged into Beats Music to create Apple Music. So far weve only talked about the on-demand music streaming portion of Apple Music, but the radio side still exists and is a versatile way to discover new music.

Apple Music Radio is divided into two separate sections:

    • Apple Music 1, which is a 24/7 radio station much like any traditional FM station. This radio station is further split into three stations:
    • Apple Music 1: the flagship station of Apple Music 1 radio. This airs a mix of the latest songs from popular music genres like pop and rap.
    • Apple Music Hits: this station airs hits from the previous three decades. Sure to cross appeal for Gen-Xers and Millennials alike.
    • Apple Music Country: Apple Music Radios country station airs modern and classic country hits.
  • Apple Music Radio: unlike Apple Music 1, Apple Music Radio stations are not curated by DJs and can represent a broad swatch of genres. These stations are classified into two categories:
  • Semi-automated stations that are pre-created and organized by genre. So if you tuned into an 80s metal station youd expect to hear all the bangers from Maiden, Priest, Ozzy, etc.
  • Custom stations are created by users. Now, these stations arent completely customizable track-by-track. Instead, Apple Musics algorithm creates a station for you based on your taste and the song youre currently listening to.
  • To create a custom station on Apple Music:

    What Is Lossless Audio

Lossless audio compression reduces the original file size of a song while preserving all of the data perfectly. Apple Music is making its entire catalogue of more than 90 million songs available in lossless audio at different resolutions.2 In Apple Music, Lossless refers to lossless audio up to 48kHz and Hi-Res Lossless refers to lossless audio from 48kHz to 192kHz. Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless files are very large and use much more bandwidth and storage space than standard AAC files. Lossless audio is not available with Apple Music Voice Plan.

We Do Not Pay A Lower Royalty Rate In Exchange For Featuring

Apple Musics team of global tastemakers hand-curate 30,000 editorial playlists. These tastemakers select music based on merit and we do not ask anyone to accept a lower royalty rate in exchange for featuring. The same is true for Apple Musics personalized playlists and algorithmic recommendations.

As a result of our commitment to these values, Apple Music paid out royalties for more than 5 million recording artists around the world in 2020, over 1 million more than in 2019. The number of recording artists whose catalogs generated recording and publishing royalties over $1 million per year increased over 120% since 2017, while the number of recording artists whose catalogs generated over $50,000 per year has more than doubled.

Like others, we have looked at alternative royalty models. Our analysis has shown that they would result in a limited redistribution of royalties with a varied impact to artists. Per play rates would cease to be the same for every play of a song. But more importantly, the changes would not increase what all creators earn from streaming. Instead, these changes would shift royalties towards a small number of labels while providing less transparency to creators everywhere.

    By Ben Sisario

When the pandemic hit last year, the British singer-songwriter Nadine Shah saw her income dry up in an instant. The concert bookings that sustained her vanished and, at age 34, she moved back in with her parents on the northeast coast of England.

I was financially crippled, Shah said in an interview.

Like musicians everywhere who were stuck off the road, staring into the abyss of their bank accounts, Shah whose dark alto and eclectic songs have brought her critical acclaim and a niche following began to examine her livelihood as an artist. Money from the streams of her songs on services like Spotify and Apple Music was practically nonexistent, she said, adding up to just a few pounds here and there. So she joined other disillusioned musicians in organizing online to push for change. Last fall, Shah testified before a Parliamentary committee that has been taking a hard look at the economics of streaming, raising the prospect of new regulation.
