Classical music broadcasting began in Chicago around 1940 with the establishment of WEFM, 99.5 FM, owned and operated by the Zenith Corporation. Their sole advertising for many years was to promote the Zenith Display Salon on Michigan Avenue, where, as their slogan said, âNo sales are made.â WFMT, 98.7 FM, started in 1952, and a few other stations played classical music for a few hours per day including WXFM. 105.9 FM. WEFM was sold in 1973, but litigation by a citizens committee caused it to remain classical until 1977, when it changed call letters and format. WXFM played classical mostly overnight until the late 1970s, with live host Ron Ray, who was the on-tape announcer at WNIB, and later became Music Director of the all-classical station.

Wnib Has Quietly Emerged As Top Classical Music Station

It may not have been the race that all eyes were focused on when Arbitron recently released its fall quarter ratings report, but classical music WNIB-FM 97.1’s continued domination over higher-profile WFMT-FM 98.7 is one of the more interesting stories in local radio.

In its fourth consecutive win over WFMT, WNIB scored a 1.8 audience share to WFMT’s 0.9. WNIB has bested WFMT in six of the past eight ratings quarters.

So why is there a lingering perception that WFMT is Chicago’s top classical outlet? Mainly, it’s because of WFMT’s national reputation. The station is the longtime home for Chicago Symphony Orchestra broadcasts, and is carried via cable to listeners in 235 U.S. cities in 37 states. Then there’s WFMT’s lucrative syndication arm, which distributes broadcasts by the CSO, Lyric Opera and San Francisco, Montreal and Milwaukee Symphonies.

WNIB is content to serve its home city from an unobtrusive West Loop facility where the resident seven cats and three dogs roam freely.

Started by Bill Florian with an initial cash outlay of $7,000 in 1955 and managed by his wife, Sonia, WNIB and sister station WNIZ-FM in Zion, which simulcasts WNIB’s signal, are currently worth an estimated $30 million.

Sonia Florian says the secret to WNIB’s success in recent years is its “small is better” management philosophy.

“Also, the owners of this station have a keen interest in classical music. We try to program music we think people want to hear and try to attract new listeners.”
