  • Can I Meditate With Music

The reason we meditate is to clear our minds of distractions. May it be to focus on ourselves, our emotions, our feelings, our surroundings, our thoughts, our stress, or maybe even to improve our spiritual health. We all may have our own separate reasons for practicing meditation, regardless, a majority of us do so in order to enter a state of peace.

However, from time to time, we encounter hiccups while trying to tap into this state of peace. Sometimes, its just too noisy, other times, we just cant focus, and there are times that we really just cant enter the zone.

And so, some of us may be wondering, Can I Meditate with Music?

Yes! If music can soothe even the savagest of beasts, just imagine the benefits that music can do for mere mortals

First things first, imagine yourself meditating at a quiet park. Its pretty easy to visualize right? That kind of peace and serenity is the kind of atmosphere youre going to be needing in order to meditate. However, try thinking of whats it like to meditate in the middle of a festival. The cheering crowd, the multitude of instruments, the happy voices of the people, and the variety of ambient sounds coming from everywhere. That kind of atmosphere wont be getting you the clear mind youre aiming for. The same thing goes for music.

Nature Sounds As An Accompaniment To Meditation

One auditory accompaniment to meditation that I do think is reasonable is recordings of natural sounds, such as water, birdsong, etc. In the Buddhas day the vast majority of meditation would have taken place outdoors. Even when meditation took place indoors, the buildings would have lacked glass windows and silence would have been extremely rare. So you could argue that meditating in the presence of natural sounds is closer to the original practice of meditation. On the other hand, just because silence was rare in the Buddhas day doesnt mean that people then wouldnt have found silence useful as a background for their practice.

Additionally, though, many of us live in very urban environments where hearing natural sounds is rare. I believe that contact with the sounds of nature fulfills a deep need for a sense of connectedness to the natural world, and that recordings of those sounds can help fill that need.

Also, natural sounds are more random and less catchy than music, and the mind is less likely to become attached to and distracted by them. In fact, its easier to tune out random natural sounds as we get more absorbed in our experience. Were more likely to get stuck listening to music.

    Meditation With Music: Key Takeaways

The debate around meditation with music highlights just how much meditation is a personal practice. For some, music will make the difference between an average meditation and a highly beneficial one. To others, using music may ruin their whole session and interfere with what to think about when meditating.

Ultimately, meditation works best when you gain all you need from it. If that means you need to use music to help you focus, then use it. If it acts as a distraction and prevents you from feeling your genuine emotions, then go ahead and meditate in silence! Above all, whatever you do, make sure that you come out of the meditation rested and more capable of facing modern lifes pressures – whatever form they take for you.

    Choosing The Right Meditation Music

Besides traditional or contemporary classical music and binaural beats you can also listen to other varieties of meditation music including: Gregorian Chanting, Primordial Sounds, Soothing Nature Sounds, Sacred sounds like Sonic Mantras, Mindfulness Bells,Tibetan Singing Bowls or Crystal Healing Bowls.

If you wish to go into the deepest state possible its recommended that you choose music that is hypnotic, calm and soothing.

Ideally, any music that helps you to feel as centered and grounded as possible. In general, its recommended to listen to music without vocals , or lots of instrumental variation which can be too stimulating or distracting to calm the mind.
