Most Popular High School Musicals 2019
For the second year in a row, The Addams Familywas the musical performed most often in high school productions, the Educational Theatre Association says.
The association’s list of the most popular high school productions in 2019-20 put Mamma Mia! in second place. Making the top 10 for the first time was Matilda, based on the Roald Dahl children’s book. It tied for 7th on the list.
High school theatrical productions, like most everything connected to schools, was significantly affected by the coronavirus.
Out of 3,297 schools that took part in the association’s survey, 85% reported canceling performances, and 28% said they canceled five or more performances.
The lost revenue from performances canceled in the spring means that in many cases, schools will have to cut back their theater budgets in 2020-21, the association says.

Top Plays Over The Years
In July 2015, NPR released a report that went above and beyond, looking at trends in school plays over the past few decades. Only two plays stood the test of time, coming in the top five most popular plays every decade since the 1940s: “You Can’t Take it With You” and “Our Town.”
Back in 2011-2012, according to a post on the Education Week blog, the ten most commonly produced school plays for the year contained few surprises. This list was the result of a survey carried out each year by the magazine Dramatics, published by the Educational Theatre Association.
Almost, Maine by John Cariani is a recent play, first developed at the Cape Cod Theatre Project and the Portland Stage Company in Maine in 2004. It opened off-Broadway in 2005-2006 and is about residents of a fictional Maine town called Almost who fall in and out of love as the Northern lights float above them in the sky.
Twelve Angry Menwritten by Reginald Rose was later turned into a 1957 movie adaptation starring Henry Fonda. It is a liberal defense of the American jury system and offers a nice ensemble cast for schools to cast many actors in important roles.

Carnegie Mellon University School Of Drama Summer Pre
As its name suggests, the Summer Pre-College program at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama exists to prepare high schoolers for an intensive college theater program.
Adapting the main schools conservatory model, the summer camp program turns it into a fully featured training experience.
With an average student size of between ten and twelve students, the programs spans from an audition and interview process to in-class collaborations to finally mounting a performance. At each step, students work closely alongside Carnegie Mellon University faculty members.
